Chapter 8: The Betrayal Came From Inside
Theodore didn't move.
He simply stared at Leonard Price.
“Say that again.””
Leonard wiped his forehead.
“Someone from Brooks Global Security was involved.””
Michael exchanged a look with Daniel.
Theodore pulled out a chair.
“Start from the beginning.””
Leonard took a breath.
“About six months ago, David Whitmore contacted me. He said there were concerns about the hotel acquisition. He wanted to know whether your company had any information about the Whitmore family.””
Theodore nodded.
“Go on.””
“He said he needed a reliable person inside the security operation. Someone who could provide information without creating unnecessary attention.””
Michael interrupted.
“You agreed to provide confidential client information?””
Leonard shook his head.
“Not at first.””
“What changed?””
Leonard looked down.
“He offered me money.””
Theodore's face remained still.
“How much?””
“Fifty thousand dollars initially.””
Daniel's expression hardened.
“And then?””
“Monthly payments.””
“From whom?””
“An outside consulting company.””
Michael opened his laptop.
“Carter Strategic Consulting?””
Leonard nodded.
“Yes.””
Theodore looked at him.
“Who owns that company?””
Leonard hesitated.
“I never met the owner.””
“Who contacted you?””
“David's assistant.””
“Name?””
“Ethan Grant.””
Michael made a note.
Leonard continued.
“Ethan told me to monitor your schedule, identify family members who might be vulnerable, and report any unusual activity.””
Theodore's jaw tightened.
“Did you report Danielle's pregnancy?””
Leonard looked up.
“Yes.””
The room went silent.
Theodore's voice became dangerously quiet.
“You reported my daughter's pregnancy?””
Leonard nodded.
“I was told it was necessary for a security assessment.””
“Who asked for the information?””
“David.””
“Why?””
Leonard swallowed.
“He wanted to know when the baby would be born and which hospital she would use.””
Theodore stood.
Daniel stepped closer.
Michael closed his laptop.
Theodore looked at Leonard.
“Why?””
Leonard began crying.
“He said there was a business matter that needed to be resolved before the acquisition.””
“What business matter?””
“I don't know.””
Theodore stared at him.
“You knew my daughter was pregnant. You knew where she was giving birth. You gave that information to someone who later sent a stranger into her hospital room.””
Leonard lowered his head.
“I didn't know Ethan would do that.””
“But you knew he had her information.””
“Yes.””
Theodore looked toward Michael.
“Get the police involved. Preserve every communication and payment record.””
Michael nodded.
Leonard suddenly leaned forward.
“Please, Mr. Brooks. I have a family.””
Theodore looked at him.
“So does my daughter.””
Leonard fell silent.
Daniel approached.
“Sir, there's another development.””
“What?””
“We located Ethan Grant's vehicle.””
“Where?””
“Outside a property registered to Carter Strategic Consulting.””
Michael immediately opened the company records.
The registered address was a commercial building on the outskirts of Atlanta.
Theodore looked at Daniel.
“Can we identify the owner?””
Daniel shook his head.
“It's held through a limited liability company.””
Michael searched the ownership documents.
Then he stopped.
“Sir.””
Theodore turned.
“What?””
Michael looked up.
“The registered agent is David Whitmore's personal attorney.””
Peter Whitmore had been telling the truth when he said he knew nothing about the payments.
But that didn't mean his brother was acting alone.
At the same time, Peter Whitmore was sitting in his office when his phone rang.
It was his brother.
David.
Peter answered immediately.
“Where are you?””
David's voice sounded calm.
“That's not important.””
“It's very important. Theodore knows about the payments.””
A pause.
“How much does he know?””
“He has the hospital incident. The recordings. Leonard's statement.””
David exhaled.
“Leonard talked?””
“Yes.””
“Idiot.””
Peter stood.
“David, what did you do?””
“I protected the company.””
“You sent someone to Danielle's hospital room?””
“I didn't send anyone to hurt her.””
“You gave someone access to her medical information!””
“Peter, you need to calm down.””
Peter laughed bitterly.
“Calm down? Theodore is investigating our entire company, and the police may be involved.””
David's voice hardened.
“Then you need to stop him.””
Peter stared at the window.
“Are you insane?””
“I'm telling you to use your position.””
“I don't have that position anymore.””
“Then remind him that you built the company.””
Peter shook his head.
“You've destroyed the company.””
David went silent.
Then he said something that made Peter's blood run cold.
“You're forgetting that you signed the original consulting agreements.””
Peter froze.
“What?””
“You approved the payments.””
Peter's voice dropped.
“Those were ordinary vendor agreements.””
“You signed them without reviewing the ownership structure.””
“Because you told me they were legitimate.””
“And they were.””
“David, stop.””
David's tone became almost friendly.
“Remember, Peter. We both benefited.””
Peter ended the call.
He sat down slowly.
For the first time, he wondered whether his brother had been using him as protection all along.
Back at Brooks Global headquarters, Daniel received a new file from the financial investigation team.
He opened it.
Then immediately called Theodore.
“Sir, we have the ownership information.””
“Who owns Carter Strategic Consulting?””
Daniel hesitated.
“It's controlled by a trust.””
“Whose trust?””
“David Whitmore's attorney is the trustee. But the beneficiary is someone else.””
“Who?””
Daniel looked at the document.
“Richard Cole.””
Theodore stared.
“Richard?””
“Yes, sir.””
Michael leaned forward.
“That's the assistant manager?””
Daniel nodded.
“Richard received payments from the consulting company while working at the Bellmont.””
Theodore looked at Michael.
“Then his confession wasn't about guilt.””
Michael shook his head.
“It may have been an attempt to distance himself from the financial arrangement.””
Daniel continued.
“There's more. Richard's payments started shortly after he was promoted to assistant general manager.””
Theodore looked toward the ceiling.
“So Vanessa was protecting Richard.””
“Possibly,” Michael replied.
“And Richard was helping David.””
Theodore stood.
“Bring him in.””
Richard Cole was sitting in a rented apartment when two investigators arrived.
He opened the door wearing sweatpants and a wrinkled shirt.
“What is this?””
One investigator showed him identification.
“Mr. Cole, we'd like to ask you some questions about your employment at the Bellmont Grand.””
Richard immediately became defensive.
“I already spoke to your people.””
“We have some additional information.””
He tried to close the door.
The second investigator placed a foot against it.
“Sir, please.””
Richard looked frightened.
“Am I under arrest?””
“Not at this time.””
He slowly stepped aside.
The investigators entered.
One placed a document on the coffee table.
“Do you recognize this company?””
Richard glanced at the name.
Carter Strategic Consulting.
His face changed.
“No.””
The investigator opened another page.
“This account received monthly transfers connected to your employment.””
Richard swallowed.
“That's not mine.””
“It's registered to an entity associated with you.””
“Someone must have used my information.””
The investigator placed a second document on the table.
A bank statement.
Richard looked at it.
His expression collapsed.
“Where did you get that?””
“Would you like to explain the transfers?””
Richard sat down.
For several seconds, he said nothing.
Then he whispered:
“I didn't know what they were doing.””
The investigator pulled out a notebook.
“Who is they?””
Richard covered his face.
“David Whitmore.””
“Anyone else?””
Richard looked up.
“Vanessa knew about the money.””
“Did she receive any?””
Richard hesitated.
Then he nodded.
“Yes.””
“How much?””
“I don't know exactly.””
“Estimate.””
“Maybe three hundred thousand over two years.””
The investigator wrote it down.
Richard's voice became desperate.
“Look, I never wanted anyone hurt. I only handled the reports. I changed the categories when Vanessa told me to.””
“And the payments?””
“David said they were consulting fees.””
“Consulting for what?””
Richard looked away.
“I was supposed to identify guests who might cause problems for the hotel.””
“What kind of guests?””
Richard hesitated.
“People who didn't fit the hotel's image.””
The investigator stared at him.
“Explain that.””
Richard lowered his head.
“Vanessa used to say the Bellmont was supposed to attract a certain kind of clientele. She wanted the lobby to look exclusive.””
“And you agreed?””
“I needed the job.””
The investigator closed his notebook.
“Did you help Ethan Grant obtain Danielle Brooks's hospital information?””
Richard looked up sharply.
“No.””
“Did you know he was visiting her?””
“No.””
“Did you know someone had threatened her?””
Richard shook his head.
“No.””
Then the investigator placed a photograph on the table.
It showed Ethan Grant entering the Bellmont service corridor.
Richard stared.
His hands began to shake.
“I saw him that day.””
“Where?””
“At the hotel.””
“When?””
“Before Mr. Brooks arrived.””
The investigator leaned forward.
“What was he doing?””
Richard looked at the photograph again.
Then he whispered:
“He came to collect something from Vanessa.””
“What?””
“A file.””
“What file?””
Richard swallowed.
“Danielle Brooks's personal security file.””
That evening, Theodore received the investigators' preliminary findings.
The file had been copied.
It contained Danielle's address, hospital details, family contacts, and several photographs taken outside her home.
Theodore looked at the photographs.
One showed Danielle walking into a grocery store while visibly pregnant.
Another showed Marcus carrying groceries to their front door.
A third showed Theodore's SUV parked outside the hospital.
He felt something inside him turn cold.
Michael stood beside him.
“This is more serious than we initially believed.””
Theodore looked at the photographs.
“Who authorized surveillance?””
“We're still tracing the orders.””
“Find out.””
Michael nodded.
Then Daniel entered.
“Sir, we have located David Whitmore.””
“Where?””
“He's at the Bellmont Grand.””
Theodore looked up.
“What is he doing there?””
Daniel hesitated.
“He requested an emergency board meeting.””
“Why?””
“He wants to challenge the acquisition.””
Michael frowned.
“On what grounds?””
Daniel placed another document on the desk.
“He's claiming the sale was fraudulent.””
Theodore read the first page.
Then he looked at Michael.
“Can he do that?””
Michael shook his head.
“Not without evidence. But he can attempt to delay certain corporate decisions.””
Theodore nodded.
“Then let's hear what he has to say.””
At 8:15 p.m., the Bellmont's executive conference room was filled with board members.
David Whitmore sat at the head of the table.
He was older than Peter, with silver hair and a carefully tailored navy suit.
He had the confidence of someone who believed every problem could be solved behind closed doors.
Peter entered.
David looked up.
“Finally.””
Peter took a seat.
“Why did you call this meeting?””
“To discuss the acquisition.””
“What about it?””
David placed a document on the table.
“Theodore Brooks has used a personal incident to take control of this company.””
Peter stared at him.
“He purchased the company through a legitimate agreement.””
David shook his head.
“The acquisition should be suspended.””
One board member spoke.
“On what basis?””
“Conflict of interest. He has a personal dispute with management and is using his ownership position to interfere with operations.””
Peter laughed bitterly.
“Your management struck his daughter.””
David ignored him.
“That's an allegation.””
Peter stared.
“We watched the footage.””
David leaned forward.
“And footage can be manipulated.””
The conference room door opened.
Theodore walked in.
Michael followed.
Daniel entered last.
David's expression tightened.
“Mr. Brooks. I wasn't expecting you.””
Theodore pulled out a chair.
“Then you should have scheduled a private meeting.””
David gave a thin smile.
“This is a board meeting.””
“I'm aware.””
David gestured toward the other members.
“We're discussing your conduct.””
Theodore placed a folder on the table.
“Then let's discuss yours.””
David's smile faded.
Theodore opened the folder.
Inside were copies of the consulting payments, hospital access records, and the security file taken from the Bellmont.
He slid the documents across the table.
“Would you like to explain these?””
David glanced at them.
His expression barely changed.
“I have no idea what you're referring to.””
Michael spoke.
“These records show payments through Carter Strategic Consulting to accounts associated with Richard Cole.””
David leaned back.
“Consulting services.””
“For what?””
“Hospitality operations.””
Theodore placed another document on the table.
“And these?””
David looked down.
A photograph of Danielle leaving the hospital.
Then one of Amara's nursery window.
David's expression finally changed.
Theodore's voice was quiet.
“Why was my family being watched?””
David looked around the table.
Nobody spoke.
Then he leaned forward.
“Because you were about to acquire a company that I spent thirty years building.””
Theodore stared at him.
“You could have challenged the sale legally.””
David's jaw tightened.
“You don't understand what was at stake.””
“What was at stake?””
David looked at him.
“The company had financial problems. The expansion was in trouble. We needed money.””
Theodore nodded.
“So you falsified records?””
David shook his head.
“We made adjustments.””
“You paid employees to suppress discrimination complaints.””
“We protected the brand.””
“You accessed private medical information.””
David's expression hardened.
“You don't know what you're talking about.””
Theodore placed one final document on the table.
It was a transcript from Olivia's recording.
David stared at it.
Then he looked at Peter.
“Where did you get this?””
Peter stood.
“Olivia Carter kept the recording.””
David's face darkened.
“That woman was fired for misconduct.””
Peter shook his head.
“No, David. She was fired because she refused to lie.””
Theodore closed the folder.
“Your meeting is over.””
David stood abruptly.
“You don't get to walk in here and dictate what happens!””
Theodore looked at him.
“I own the company.””
David laughed.
“Not for long.””
He pulled a second folder from his briefcase.
Inside was a signed document.
He placed it in front of the board chairman.
“Before the acquisition was finalized, Peter and I signed an agreement granting me authority to challenge any transfer involving the hotel's original corporate assets.””
Michael immediately picked up the document.
His expression changed.
Theodore noticed.
“What is it?””
Michael examined the signature page.
“Sir, this appears to be an amendment to the original shareholder agreement.””
“Is it valid?””
Michael looked up.
“I'm not sure yet.””
David smiled.
“Then perhaps you should read the entire document.””
He turned toward the board.
“Because there's something Mr. Brooks doesn't know.””
Then David looked directly at Theodore.
“The Bellmont Grand wasn't the only property included in the acquisition.””
He tapped the document.
“Your company purchased all six hotels.””
He paused.
“But one of them was never legally owned by Whitmore Hospitality.””
Theodore's expression hardened.
“Which one?””
David smiled.
“The property where your daughter gave birth.””
The room went silent.
Michael looked at the document again.
May you like
Then he whispered:
“Sir, we may have a much bigger problem.””
