Chapter 6: The Secret Behind the Hotel's Perfect Reputation

Peter Whitmore read the name three times.

Then he lowered the tablet.

“That's impossible.””

Theodore stood opposite him.

“Why?””

“Because my brother hasn't been involved in daily hotel operations for years.””

Michael looked at the document.

“According to the former employee, he attended a private meeting with Vanessa and Leonard Price approximately eighteen months ago.””

Peter shook his head.

“My brother is a board member. He wouldn't be involved in something like this.””

Theodore didn't respond.

He had learned long ago that people often defended relatives before they examined evidence.

Michael continued.

“Her statement says the meeting concerned guest complaints and employee reports. She claims several incidents were deliberately misclassified.””

Peter looked toward him.

“Who is my brother?””

“David Whitmore.””

Peter rubbed his forehead.

“David is the chairman of the board.””

Theodore nodded.

“Then we'll speak to him.””

Peter stared.

“Mr. Brooks, I need to handle this internally.””

Theodore looked at him.

“Your company has already handled it internally for eighteen months. That's why we're standing here.””

Peter lowered his eyes.

Michael closed the tablet.

“We need an independent investigator.””

“Agreed,” Theodore said.

Peter nodded reluctantly.

“I'll authorize it.””

Theodore looked toward Daniel.

“Arrange a secure interview with Olivia Carter. No hotel management personnel are to contact her.””

“Yes, sir.””

“And make sure she knows she's protected from retaliation.””

Daniel nodded.

Two hours later, Olivia Carter arrived at a private conference room in a nearby office building.

She was thirty-four, with shoulder-length natural hair and a dark green jacket.

She looked nervous.

She held a small handbag tightly against her side.

When she entered, she saw Theodore, Michael, Peter, and an independent investigator named Rebecca Shaw.

Rebecca stood.

“Ms. Carter, thank you for coming.””

Olivia nodded.

“I almost didn't.””

“That's understandable. We appreciate your willingness to speak.””

Olivia looked toward Peter.

“Is David here?””

Peter shook his head.

“No.””

“Good.””

She sat down.

Rebecca placed a glass of water in front of her.

“Would you like to begin by explaining your former position at the Bellmont?””

Olivia nodded.

“I was the guest relations supervisor. I worked there for almost four years.””

“What happened?””

Olivia looked at her hands.

“I was fired.””

“Why?””

“Because I refused to change a guest complaint.””

Peter leaned forward.

“What complaint?””

Olivia looked at him.

“A family complained that Vanessa had insulted them because they were Black. They had a reservation, but Vanessa said they looked suspicious and didn't belong in the lobby.””

Peter's face tightened.

“When was this?””

“About two years ago.””

“Why wasn't it reported to me?””

Olivia gave a bitter laugh.

“I reported it to corporate.””

Peter said nothing.

Olivia continued.

“I submitted the complaint with the guest's name, the reservation details, and a copy of the lobby recording.””

Rebecca made a note.

“What happened afterward?””

“Vanessa called me into her office.””

Olivia paused.

“She told me I was damaging the hotel. She said guests like that were difficult to manage and that the Bellmont had a particular image to maintain.””

Theodore's eyes narrowed.

“What did you say?””

“I told her that a reservation was a reservation. If someone paid to stay at the hotel, they deserved to be treated properly.””

Olivia looked down.

“She told me I was too emotional for hospitality.””

Rebecca nodded.

“Then what?””

“She removed me from the schedule. Two weeks later, I was terminated for allegedly mishandling guest information.””

Peter leaned back.

“That's not acceptable.””

Olivia looked at him.

“It's not acceptable now that you're hearing it from me?””

Peter looked uncomfortable.

“I didn't know.””

Olivia reached into her handbag.

“That's why I brought this.””

She removed a small encrypted storage device.

Rebecca placed it on the table.

“What does it contain?””

“An audio recording and a video recording.””

Peter stared at her.

“Where did you get these?””

Olivia looked at him.

“I recorded a meeting because I knew nobody would believe me.””

Rebecca connected the device to an isolated laptop.

A file appeared.

*PRIVATE MANAGEMENT MEETING — 18 MONTHS AGO*

Olivia pressed play.

At first, there was the sound of chairs moving.

Then Vanessa's voice.

“We cannot keep allowing complaints like this to reach corporate.””

A male voice responded.

“We need to be careful. Some of these people are threatening legal action.””

Vanessa laughed.

“Most of them won't follow through.””

Then another voice spoke.

“Vanessa, the important thing is that we maintain the hotel's reputation.””

Peter sat up.

He recognized the voice.

David Whitmore.

His older brother.

The recording continued.

Vanessa said:

“Then I want every complaint categorized as a guest conduct issue. If they claim discrimination, we say they became aggressive. If they ask for footage, we say the system malfunctioned.””

A pause.

Then David spoke.

“Keep the reports out of the board summaries. I don't want unnecessary problems before the expansion.””

Peter's face went white.

Theodore watched him.

The recording continued.

Leonard's voice entered.

“What about employees who refuse to cooperate?””

David answered:

“Then replace them.””

Vanessa laughed.

“That's what I've been doing.””

Olivia stopped the recording.

Nobody spoke.

Peter looked as though someone had struck him.

He slowly removed his glasses.

“My brother…”

His voice broke.

Michael placed a hand on the table.

“Peter, we need to verify the recording and establish its authenticity.””

Peter nodded.

But he wasn't looking at Michael.

He was staring at the laptop.

“David knew.””

Olivia nodded.

“He knew everything.””

Peter looked at her.

“Why didn't you come forward sooner?””

Olivia's expression hardened.

“I did.””

Peter looked away.

“I mean—”

“You didn't listen.””

Her words were quiet.

But they landed harder than shouting.

Olivia continued.

“I lost my job. I lost my apartment because I couldn't pay my bills. I had to move in with my sister. And every time I applied for another hotel position, someone from the industry would tell me that I had a reputation for being difficult.””

Rebecca leaned forward.

“Did anyone threaten you directly?””

Olivia nodded.

“Vanessa called me after I was fired. She told me I should stop talking about what happened if I wanted to keep working in Atlanta.””

Peter covered his face.

Theodore remained silent.

He was thinking about Danielle.

About the other mother in the old complaint.

About the people who had been forced to leave that lobby while everyone else carried on with their day.

He looked at Olivia.

“Why did you keep the recording?””

Olivia's eyes filled.

“Because I knew one day someone would need proof.””

Theodore nodded.

“You did the right thing.””

Olivia wiped her eyes.

“I just wish someone had listened before it happened to another woman.””

Back at the Bellmont, Vanessa was sitting in a private office with her lawyer.

She had been released from the police station pending further investigation.

Her lawyer, Gregory Mills, was a well-dressed man in his early sixties.

He placed a folder on the desk.

“Vanessa, I need you to be completely honest with me.””

“I already told you what happened.””

“Then explain why there are recordings showing you striking a woman holding a newborn.””

Vanessa folded her arms.

“She provoked me.””

Gregory stared at her.

“How?””

“She was disrespectful.””

“Did she threaten you?””

“No.””

“Did she hit you?””

“No.””

“Did she damage the property?””

Vanessa hesitated.

“No.””

Gregory closed the folder.

“Then stop calling it self-defense.””

Vanessa stood.

“I have worked in this industry for eleven years. I built that hotel.””

“You managed it.””

“I built its reputation.””

Gregory looked at her.

“And now that reputation is under investigation.””

She paced toward the window.

“Peter will fix this.””

“Peter has been removed from direct oversight of the investigation.””

Vanessa turned.

“What?””

“The new ownership has appointed an independent review team.””

She laughed.

“They can't just erase eleven years of my work.””

Gregory looked at her.

“Vanessa, the question isn't whether you worked hard. The question is whether you broke the law and whether you participated in a pattern of discriminatory conduct.””

She stared at him.

Then her phone vibrated.

A message appeared.

*RICHARD COLE: I told them about the complaints.*

Vanessa's expression changed.

She typed quickly.

*VANESSA: What did you tell them?*

No reply.

She called him.

He didn't answer.

She tried again.

Still nothing.

Gregory watched her.

“Who are you calling?””

“Richard.””

“Don't contact him.””

“He's going to destroy everything.””

“Vanessa, listen to me. Do not contact any potential witness.””

She ignored him.

She opened another contact.

*DAVID WHITMORE.*

She pressed call.

The phone rang.

Once.

Twice.

Then a familiar voice answered.

“Vanessa.””

She lowered her voice.

“David, we have a serious problem.””

“I know.””

“Peter has seen the footage.””

“I know.””

“Olivia Carter has the recording.””

Silence.

Then David spoke.

“Where did you hear that?””

“It's true. She gave it to them.””

David exhaled.

“Listen carefully. Do not speak to anyone.””

Vanessa looked toward Gregory.

“What about the board?””

“I'll handle the board.””

“What about Theodore Brooks?””

Another pause.

“Stay away from him.””

Vanessa's voice trembled.

“David, he owns the company now.””

“I know exactly who he is.””

She swallowed.

“Then what are we going to do?””

David lowered his voice.

“We're going to make sure he understands that this acquisition came with more problems than he expected.””

Vanessa frowned.

“What does that mean?””

“It means there are things about this company he hasn't discovered yet.””

The call ended.

Vanessa stared at her phone.

Gregory slowly stood.

“What was that?””

“Nothing.””

“Vanessa.””

She looked at him.

“David says he can handle it.””

Gregory's expression changed.

“Handle what?””

She didn't answer.

At the Brooks residence that evening, Danielle was finally resting.

Amara was asleep in her nursery.

The house was quiet except for the soft sound of a baby monitor.

Theodore sat in his study with Michael and Daniel.

On the desk lay the documents from the acquisition.

Theodore turned one page.

Then another.

“Show me the financial review.””

Michael opened his laptop.

“The Bellmont's financial records are mostly clean, but there are several unusual payments.””

“What kind?””

“Payments to an outside consulting company. The amounts are substantial.””

“Who owns it?””

Michael hesitated.

“We're still verifying the beneficial ownership.””

Theodore leaned back.

“How much?””

“Approximately four million dollars over three years.””

Theodore stared at him.

“Four million?””

“Yes.””

“For consulting services?””

“That's how the payments were categorized.””

Daniel placed a second folder on the desk.

“There's another issue.””

Theodore looked up.

“What?””

“The security director's credentials were used to access financial records outside normal working hours.””

Michael frowned.

“Why would security access accounting records?””

Daniel opened the folder.

“That's what we're trying to establish.””

Theodore studied the page.

Then he noticed something.

A company name.

*Carter Strategic Consulting.*

He looked toward Michael.

“Is that Olivia's company?””

Michael shook his head.

“No. It's registered to someone named Marcus Carter.””

Theodore stared at the document.

“Related to Olivia?””

“We don't know yet.””

He turned the page.

A signature appeared at the bottom.

David Whitmore.

Theodore's eyes narrowed.

“Find out who received the money.””

Michael nodded.

“We're already tracing it.””

Then Daniel's phone vibrated.

He checked the message.

His expression changed.

“Sir?””

“What?””

“We received a call from the hospital.””

Theodore immediately stood.

“Is Danielle all right?””

“They're fine, sir. But someone contacted the maternity ward asking for Danielle's discharge information.””

Theodore went completely still.

“Who?””

“The caller claimed to be from the Bellmont Grand.””

Michael looked up.

“Did the hospital provide anything?””

“No. They refused.””

Theodore looked toward the baby monitor.

Then back at Daniel.

“Find out who made that call.””

Daniel nodded.

“Immediately.””

Theodore's voice dropped.

“And increase security around my daughter and granddaughter.””

“Yes, sir.””

He turned toward the window.

Outside, the driveway lights illuminated the security vehicles.

He had expected a difficult corporate investigation.

He had expected resistance.

But now someone was trying to obtain private information about Danielle and Amara.

This was no longer just about a hotel manager.

Theodore picked up his phone.

He called Michael.

“Prepare a complete report for the board.””

“What's the objective?””

Theodore looked at the acquisition documents.

“To find out what David Whitmore is hiding.””

Then his phone vibrated.

An unknown number had sent him a message.

There was no greeting.

No explanation.

Just one sentence.

*YOU SHOULD ASK YOUR DAUGHTER WHAT REALLY HAPPENED THREE DAYS BEFORE SHE ENTERED THE HOTEL.*

Theodore stared at the screen.

His blood ran cold.

Three days before the hotel incident, Danielle had given birth.

But the message suggested someone knew something else.

Something Theodore hadn't been told.

He immediately called his daughter.

“Danielle, sweetheart, I need to ask you something.””

Her sleepy voice answered.

“Dad? Is everything okay?””

He hesitated.

“Did anyone contact you before you came to the hotel today?””

Silence.

Then Danielle spoke.

“Dad…”

“What is it?””

She took a shaky breath.

“There was someone at the hospital the night Amara was born.””

Theodore tightened his grip on the phone.

“Who?””

Danielle's voice dropped to a whisper.

“Someone who said he worked for you.””

May you like

And before Theodore could ask another question, she added:

“He told me that my baby wasn't safe.””
