Chapter 2: The Man Who Owned the Building

"Naomi!""

Daniel Carter's voice carried across the lobby.

Naomi turned.

The moment she saw her father, her carefully controlled expression crumbled.

"Dad.""

Daniel crossed the marble floor quickly.

He was sixty-two, tall, broad-shouldered, and impeccably dressed in a charcoal suit with a white pocket square. His silver hair was neatly trimmed, and his usual calm expression had disappeared.

He stopped in front of Naomi.

For a moment, he didn't say anything.

He looked at her cheek.

Then he looked at Elijah.

"Let me see my grandson.""

Naomi carefully adjusted the baby so Daniel could examine him.

"He's okay. He's just scared.""

Daniel touched the newborn's tiny hand.

"Hey, little man. Grandpa's here.""

Elijah continued crying.

Daniel looked back at his daughter.

"Who did this?""

Naomi glanced toward Vanessa.

"She did.""

Vanessa raised an eyebrow.

"Excuse me?""

Daniel slowly turned.

"Did you slap my daughter?""

Vanessa looked him over.

His suit was expensive, but not flashy. His shoes were polished. His leather briefcase carried no visible brand.

She didn't recognize him.

And that was enough for her to feel confident.

"Your daughter was being disruptive.""

Daniel stared at her.

"I asked you a question.""

Vanessa lifted her chin.

"And I answered it. She was standing where she wasn't supposed to be.""

"That doesn't answer my question.""

Marcus hurried forward.

"Mr. Carter.""

Daniel didn't look at him.

"Not now, Marcus.""

The manager stopped.

Vanessa's eyes moved between them.

"Wait. You know the manager?""

Daniel finally turned toward her.

"I employ him.""

Vanessa blinked.

"What?""

Daniel gestured toward the reception desk.

"I own this building. I own Ashford House. I own the company that operates it.""

The receptionist froze.

One of the businessmen lowered his phone.

Vanessa gave a nervous laugh.

"That's an interesting story.""

Daniel didn't smile.

"My name is Daniel Carter.""

The name landed differently.

The receptionist knew it.

Marcus certainly knew it.

Vanessa's husband had once mentioned Carter Hospitality during a business dinner. Daniel Carter's company owned properties in several major American cities.

Vanessa's expression shifted.

But only slightly.

She recovered quickly.

"Well, if you're the owner, perhaps you should know that your daughter was behaving inappropriately.""

Daniel looked at Naomi.

"Sweetheart, tell me exactly what happened.""

Naomi swallowed.

"I came here to meet you. I was waiting near reception. She told me I didn't belong here.""

"And then?""

"She followed me when I tried to sit down. She slapped me.""

Daniel's jaw tightened.

"Did anyone intervene?""

Naomi shook her head.

"Nobody.""

Daniel turned toward Marcus.

"Is that true?""

Marcus adjusted his tie.

"Mr. Carter, there was a misunderstanding.""

"A misunderstanding?""

"Miss Whitmore reported that your daughter was causing a disturbance. I was trying to maintain order.""

Daniel stared at him.

"You saw a woman sitting on the floor holding a newborn, and your first instinct was to remove her?""

Marcus hesitated.

"I didn't know who she was.""

Daniel took one step closer.

"That is precisely the problem.""

The lobby fell silent.

Vanessa crossed her arms.

"Look, I don't appreciate being treated like some criminal. I have been a guest here for three days, and I've spent a considerable amount of money.""

Daniel glanced at her.

"How much?""

Vanessa blinked.

"What?""

"How much have you spent here?""

"That's none of your business.""

"Actually, it is.""

She looked toward Marcus.

"Can you please explain to this man that I am a paying guest?""

Daniel let out a quiet breath.

"Marcus, do you know why my daughter is here?""

Marcus swallowed.

"No, sir.""

"Because I invited her.""

He paused.

"And because I wanted her to see something.""

Daniel looked around the lobby.

"This building was restored four years ago. We kept the original brick walls, the historic windows, the marble flooring. We spent millions making this place beautiful.""

He pointed toward the velvet chairs.

"But none of that matters if the people working inside it don't understand what hospitality means.""

Marcus nodded quickly.

"Of course, sir.""

Daniel's eyes hardened.

"Don't agree with me. Answer me.""

"Yes, sir.""

"Did you personally witness my daughter strike anyone?""

"No, sir.""

"Did you investigate before deciding she was the problem?""

Marcus looked down.

"I was responding to a guest complaint.""

Daniel nodded slowly.

"So you believed the person wearing the expensive dress and ignored the woman holding a newborn.""

Marcus said nothing.

Vanessa suddenly stepped forward.

"This is ridiculous. I didn't know she was your daughter.""

Daniel looked at her.

"Would that have made a difference?""

Vanessa opened her mouth.

Then closed it.

"Well, obviously, I wouldn't have—"

"Wouldn't have what?""

"I mean, I would have handled things differently.""

Daniel stared at her.

Naomi looked at her father.

"Please, Dad.""

Daniel turned.

"What is it, sweetheart?""

"I don't want a scene.""

He softened immediately.

"I know.""

"I just wanted to see you.""

Daniel looked at the red mark on her cheek again.

"And you should have been able to do that without being struck.""

He reached into his jacket and took out a clean handkerchief.

Naomi accepted it.

Daniel gently touched her shoulder.

"Are you sure Elijah is okay?""

"He's fine.""

"Let's have someone bring you a chair.""

Before Marcus could respond, Daniel raised one hand.

"Not you.""

The manager stopped.

Daniel turned toward the receptionist.

"Could you please bring my daughter some water and have someone contact our medical team? I want her checked.""

"Of course, Mr. Carter.""

The receptionist hurried away.

Vanessa shifted her handbag.

"Well, I think we've all had a misunderstanding. I'm sure we can forget this happened.""

Daniel looked at her.

"Forget it?""

"Yes. It was an unfortunate incident.""

"An unfortunate incident is when someone spills coffee. You struck a woman holding a newborn.""

Vanessa's lips tightened.

"She was rude to me.""

Naomi finally spoke.

"I asked you to leave me alone.""

Vanessa turned sharply.

"You were standing in my way!""

"I was standing beside a chair.""

"Don't tell me what I saw.""

Daniel raised his hand.

"Enough.""

The word was quiet.

But it ended the argument.

He turned toward the security guard.

"Please preserve the lobby surveillance footage. Every camera angle. From the moment my daughter entered the building.""

"Yes, sir.""

"And make sure nobody deletes, edits, or transfers anything.""

The guard nodded.

"I'll handle it.""

Marcus stepped forward.

"Mr. Carter, I can review the footage myself.""

Daniel looked at him.

"No.""

"Sir?""

"You're part of the incident. You'll have no involvement in the investigation.""

Marcus's face tightened.

Daniel continued.

"I also want the receptionist's account, the security report, and statements from every employee who was present.""

Vanessa gave a dismissive laugh.

"You're going to conduct an entire investigation over one slap?""

Daniel looked at her.

"No. I'm going to conduct an investigation because a manager tried to throw a mother and her newborn out of a hotel after she was assaulted.""

He paused.

"Your slap simply made the problem impossible to ignore.""

A few minutes later, Naomi was seated in a velvet chair near the brass lamps.

A glass of water sat on the table.

Elijah had finally stopped crying.

Daniel sat beside her, holding his grandson's tiny hand.

For the first time since entering the building, he looked like himself again.

"Sweetheart, why didn't you call me immediately?""

Naomi gave a tired smile.

"I didn't want to interrupt your meeting.""

Daniel shook his head.

"Nothing is more important than you.""

She looked at him.

"That's what you always say.""

"Because it's true.""

He leaned forward.

"Did she hurt you anywhere else?""

"No.""

"Are you sure?""

"Yes, Dad.""

Daniel studied her face.

Then he looked toward Vanessa.

She was standing near the reception desk, speaking quietly into her phone.

"Who is she?"" he asked.

"She never told me her name.""

Daniel looked toward Marcus.

"Marcus?""

The manager hesitated.

"Vanessa Whitmore. She's a long-term guest. Her husband is Richard Whitmore.""

Daniel's expression changed.

"Richard Whitmore?""

"Yes, sir.""

Daniel sat back.

He knew that name.

Richard Whitmore was a real estate developer who had recently approached Carter Hospitality with a proposal involving several downtown properties.

Daniel had rejected the proposal two weeks earlier.

It had been financially attractive, but the contract contained several troubling clauses.

He had assumed that was the end of the matter.

Apparently, it wasn't.

Vanessa looked up and noticed Daniel watching her.

She immediately turned away.

Naomi noticed the change in her father's expression.

"Do you know her husband?""

"I know of him.""

"Is something wrong?""

Daniel forced a small smile.

"Nothing you need to worry about right now.""

But his attention returned to Vanessa.

She was whispering into her phone.

And then Daniel heard something that made him stop.

"No, Richard," Vanessa said quietly.

"You need to come here.""

A pause.

"Because I think we have a serious problem.""

She glanced toward Daniel.

Then lowered her voice.

"Her father owns the hotel.""

Daniel slowly looked at his daughter.

"Naomi.""

"Yes?""

"Did you hear her mention her husband?""

Naomi nodded.

"She called someone named Richard.""

Daniel stood.

"Security?""

The guard approached.

"Yes, sir?""

"Nobody leaves until the footage has been secured and the statements have been taken.""

Vanessa immediately ended her call.

"Excuse me?""

Daniel turned.

"Is there a problem?""

She stared at him.

"You cannot detain me.""

"I'm not detaining you. I'm asking you to remain available while we document what happened.""

Vanessa grabbed her handbag.

"I've already told you what happened.""

Daniel's phone vibrated.

He glanced at the screen.

An incoming message from his corporate security director.

He opened it.

The message contained a single sentence:

*Mr. Carter, we reviewed the preliminary footage. There is something you need to see before you make any decisions about Mrs. Whitmore.*

Daniel looked up.

And for the first time that afternoon, his expression showed something other than anger.

May you like

It showed concern.

Because apparently, the woman who had slapped his daughter wasn't the only person who had something to hide.
