Chapter 9: The Last Move Before Sunrise

The fire alarm continued ringing.

Daniel rushed toward the lobby with Detective Harris and James behind him.

Red emergency lights flashed across the marble floor.

Guests were gathering near the reception desk, some holding suitcases, others carrying children. A hotel employee was trying to direct everyone toward the main entrance.

But the electronic doors weren't opening.

"What's happening?"" Daniel demanded.

The night supervisor, Peter Lawson, approached.

"Mr. Carter, the alarm system has been overridden.""

"Can you release the doors manually?""

"We're trying.""

Daniel looked toward the staircase.

"Where's the fire?""

Peter shook his head.

"We haven't detected smoke or heat.""

"Then why is the alarm active?""

"We're investigating.""

Detective Harris spoke into her radio.

"Fire department is on the way. Keep guests away from the elevators.""

Daniel turned toward James.

"Find the source of the override.""

James hurried toward the control room.

Naomi emerged from the private lounge carrying Elijah.

Daniel immediately approached her.

"Why are you out here?""

"I heard the alarm.""

"You should be with Evelyn.""

"She is with the officers. Dad, what's happening?""

Daniel looked at the flashing lights.

"Someone is trying to force an evacuation.""

Naomi glanced around.

"Then let's get everyone out.""

Daniel nodded.

"Exactly.""

He turned toward Peter.

"Open the emergency exits.""

"We're trying, sir.""

"Try harder.""

Peter hurried away.

A hotel employee approached Naomi.

"Ma'am, please move away from the lobby.""

Naomi looked at the frightened guests.

One elderly woman was struggling with a suitcase.

A father was carrying a sleeping toddler.

A young couple stood near the locked glass doors.

Naomi adjusted Elijah and approached them.

"Everyone, please stay calm. The fire department is coming.""

A little girl began crying.

Naomi crouched carefully.

"Hey, sweetheart. What's your name?""

"Emily.""

"Hi, Emily. I'm Naomi. See this little boy?""

The girl nodded.

"He's scared too. But we're going to get everybody outside safely.""

Emily looked at Elijah.

"He's crying.""

Naomi smiled faintly.

"He's having a difficult night.""

The girl's father thanked her.

Daniel watched his daughter.

Even after everything that had happened, she was still checking on strangers.

He looked toward the hotel employees.

"That's what hospitality looks like.""

In the control room, James discovered the problem.

Someone had accessed the fire-control system using a maintenance override code.

The system had been programmed to activate the alarms while simultaneously disabling the main electronic door releases.

James contacted the fire department's technical team.

Then he noticed something else.

A second command had been scheduled for 5:45 a.m.

It would disable the hotel's internal security recording system.

James immediately called Daniel.

"Mr. Carter, I found the override.""

"Who did it?""

"The command came through a remote maintenance account.""

"Can you identify the user?""

James paused.

"Yes.""

Daniel's voice sharpened.

"Who?""

"Marcus Bennett.""

Daniel closed his eyes.

The manager had disappeared with the original deed.

Now he was using the hotel's maintenance system to create an emergency.

"Can you reverse it?""

"We're working on it.""

"Do it.""

James looked at the screen.

"Mr. Carter, there's another command running.""

"What command?""

"A data deletion sequence.""

Daniel's stomach tightened.

"Which data?""

"The entire security archive.""

Daniel looked toward Detective Harris.

"Someone is trying to erase the evidence.""

Detective Harris immediately called for additional officers.

"Where is the server room?""

Daniel pointed toward the service corridor.

"Behind the administrative offices.""

They hurried toward it.

The server room door was slightly open.

James arrived first.

He pushed it carefully.

Inside, a hotel employee was standing beside the main computer rack.

He turned.

It was Thomas Reed.

The same employee who had confessed to exchanging folders for Marcus.

But this time, he wasn't frightened.

He was holding a small external drive.

James stopped.

"Thomas?""

Thomas looked toward the door.

Then he looked down at the drive.

"I can explain.""

James raised his hand.

"Put it down.""

Thomas hesitated.

Detective Harris stepped forward.

"Thomas, place the device on the floor.""

Thomas obeyed.

Daniel entered.

"What are you doing here?""

Thomas looked exhausted.

"Marcus called me.""

Daniel's eyes narrowed.

"From where?""

"I don't know. He told me to erase the maintenance records.""

"Why?""

Thomas swallowed.

"He said Richard would make sure I was protected if I did.""

Daniel stared at him.

"You've already given a statement.""

"I know.""

"Then why are you helping them again?""

Thomas lowered his eyes.

"Because they have my brother.""

The room fell silent.

Detective Harris stepped closer.

"Who has your brother?""

"Richard's people. They took him from his apartment this afternoon.""

Thomas began shaking.

"They said if I didn't help them, he wouldn't come home.""

Daniel looked at Detective Harris.

"Can you verify that?""

She nodded.

"We'll investigate immediately.""

Thomas wiped his face.

"I didn't want anybody hurt.""

Daniel looked at him.

"Then help us stop them.""

Thomas nodded.

He pointed toward the computer.

"There's a second file. Marcus saved it under a different account.""

James examined the screen.

A document appeared.

It contained the details of a proposed emergency management contract.

If the hotel was declared unsafe, an outside company would take temporary control of the property.

The company was registered to a subsidiary of Whitmore Capital Holdings.

Daniel stared.

"They're trying to take control of the hotel through an emergency closure.""

James nodded.

"Yes, sir.""

Detective Harris examined the document.

"Can you prove who authorized this?""

James opened the audit log.

Three usernames appeared.

Richard Whitmore.

Marcus Bennett.

And Anthony Carter.

Daniel looked at the screen.

Anthony had been arrested hours earlier.

But his account had still been active.

"How?""

James examined the timestamps.

"These commands were scheduled before his arrest.""

Daniel nodded slowly.

"So Richard still has access.""

Detective Harris looked toward the door.

"We need to secure the control room.""

James began reversing the override.

The fire alarm suddenly stopped.

The electronic doors released.

And from the lobby came the sound of guests cheering.

Daniel exhaled.

"Good.""

But James wasn't finished.

"Mr. Carter, the deletion sequence is still running.""

"Stop it.""

"I'm trying.""

A red notification appeared.

<escape>ARCHIVE DELETION: 82% COMPLETE.</escape>

James typed rapidly.

Then the screen went black.

He stared at it.

"Mr. Carter...""

Daniel approached.

"What?""

"The primary archive has been erased.""

Detective Harris looked at him.

"All of it?""

James nodded.

"Almost everything.""

Thomas suddenly spoke.

"Not everything.""

Everyone turned.

He pointed toward a small black device connected to the server.

"Marcus told me to copy the original footage before deleting the archive.""

Daniel frowned.

"Why would he do that?""

Thomas looked down.

"Because he wanted insurance.""

James removed the device.

He connected it to a secure laptop.

A folder appeared.

Inside were dozens of video files.

Lobby recordings.

Administrative office recordings.

Service corridor footage.

And one file labeled:

*WHITMORE — PRIVATE MEETING.*

Daniel looked at James.

"Open it.""

The video showed a meeting inside the hotel's private conference room.

Richard sat at one end of the table.

Marcus sat opposite him.

Anthony was on a video call.

And Vanessa was standing beside the window.

Richard placed several documents on the table.

"We have one opportunity. Once Naomi signs, the trust becomes irrelevant.""

Anthony's voice came through the laptop.

"She won't sign unless Daniel agrees.""

Vanessa laughed.

"Then make sure Daniel is busy.""

Marcus leaned forward.

"What if the girl refuses?""

Richard looked directly at him.

"Then remove her.""

Vanessa asked, "And if she causes trouble?""

Richard answered without hesitation.

"Make her look unstable. A young mother with a baby, an emotional confrontation, a complaint. Nobody will believe her over a hotel manager.""

Daniel's hands curled into fists.

The video continued.

Marcus asked, "What about the cameras?""

Richard smiled.

"By the time anyone asks for footage, there won't be any.""

Naomi had entered the server room quietly.

She watched the video.

Her face went pale.

"That's why he wanted me out.""

Daniel turned.

"Naomi, you shouldn't be here.""

She stared at the screen.

"He planned to make everybody think I was the problem.""

Daniel nodded.

"Yes.""

Naomi looked at the frozen image of Vanessa.

"She knew.""

Daniel didn't answer.

Naomi took a breath.

"Then I want that video preserved.""

Detective Harris nodded.

"It will be submitted as evidence.""

Naomi looked at her father.

"And I want to see Vanessa.""

At 1:10 a.m., Vanessa was brought into a private interview room.

She looked exhausted.

Her fuchsia dress was wrinkled, and her carefully arranged curls had begun to fall.

Detective Harris sat opposite her.

Daniel stood near the door.

Naomi sat beside him with Elijah sleeping in his carrier.

Vanessa looked at Naomi.

Then she looked away.

Detective Harris placed a printed photograph on the table.

It showed the meeting between Vanessa, Richard, Marcus, and Anthony.

"Do you recognize these people?""

Vanessa sighed.

"Obviously.""

"Do you recognize this meeting?""

"Yes.""

"Did you know about the plan to remove Naomi Carter from the hotel?""

Vanessa remained silent.

Detective Harris waited.

Finally, Vanessa spoke.

"Richard told me she was going to interfere with a business transaction.""

"Did he tell you to slap her?""

Vanessa looked at Daniel.

"No.""

Naomi's eyes narrowed.

"Then why did you do it?""

Vanessa swallowed.

"Because I thought you were trying to embarrass me.""

Naomi stared.

"I was holding my baby.""

"You were in the wrong place.""

"There was nothing wrong with where I was standing.""

Vanessa looked down.

Detective Harris continued.

"Did Richard tell you to make a scene?""

Vanessa nodded.

"He said Daniel would be distracted if his daughter was involved in a public incident.""

Daniel closed his eyes.

"So you knew.""

Vanessa began crying.

"I didn't know it would go this far.""

Naomi looked at her.

"You hit me.""

Vanessa covered her face.

"I know.""

"You watched me fall while I was holding my son.""

"I know.""

"You told the manager to throw me out.""

Vanessa lowered her hands.

"Richard said everything had to happen before Daniel arrived.""

Naomi's voice trembled.

"Why didn't you just walk away?""

Vanessa looked at her.

For the first time, she had no answer.

Detective Harris closed her notebook.

"Mrs. Whitmore, we'll need a full statement.""

Vanessa nodded.

Then she looked at Naomi.

"I'm sorry.""

Naomi held her gaze.

"You aren't sorry because you hurt me. You're sorry because the plan failed.""

Vanessa began crying harder.

Naomi turned away.

At 2:05 a.m., Detective Harris received confirmation that Richard Whitmore had been located.

He was at a private airport terminal, preparing to board a flight.

Police officers detained him before departure.

He had two suitcases, several electronic devices, and a folder containing the original property transfer documents.

Marcus Bennett was located shortly afterward at a motel outside the city.

The original deed was recovered from his vehicle.

The documents were placed into evidence.

But Daniel knew there was still one matter to resolve.

The fraudulent transfer had not been completed.

The trust was protected.

And Ashford House would remain in Naomi's name.

At 3:40 a.m., Daniel sat beside his daughter in the quiet lobby.

The alarms had been reset.

Guests had returned to their rooms.

The brass lamps glowed softly.

For the first time in hours, the hotel felt peaceful.

Naomi looked at the marble floor where she had fallen.

"Dad?""

"Yes, sweetheart?""

"Do you remember what I said when you first arrived?""

Daniel smiled sadly.

"You said you didn't want a scene.""

Naomi nodded.

"I didn't.""

He looked around the lobby.

"Neither did I.""

She touched her cheek.

"It still hurts.""

Daniel's expression softened.

"I know.""

He reached for her hand.

"I'm sorry I didn't tell you about the trust earlier.""

Naomi looked at him.

"Why did you keep it secret?""

"Because I thought I was protecting you.""

She gave a small smile.

"Maybe next time, protect me by trusting me.""

Daniel nodded.

"Fair enough.""

Elijah stirred.

Naomi gently rocked him.

Then she looked toward the reception desk.

"I want to change something.""

Daniel turned.

"What?""

"I want this hotel to be different.""

He smiled.

"Tell me.""

Naomi looked at the velvet chairs, the polished marble, and the brass lamps.

"I want people to feel welcome here. Not because they're rich. Not because they know the owner. Because they're people.""

Daniel watched her.

Her mother's words.

Her mother's dream.

The reason he had bought the building.

He nodded.

"Then that's what we'll do.""

But before they could say anything else, James approached with a sealed envelope.

"Mr. Carter.""

Daniel looked up.

"What is it?""

"The police recovered this from Richard's briefcase.""

Daniel opened it.

Inside was a letter addressed to Naomi.

The handwriting was familiar.

It belonged to his mother.

Daniel read the first line.

Then his expression changed completely.

Naomi noticed.

"Dad?""

He looked at her.

"This isn't from Richard.""

"Then who wrote it?""

Daniel turned the page.

At the bottom was his mother's signature.

And beneath it, a handwritten sentence:

*If Naomi ever asks why her father kept the truth from her, tell her what happened the night I died.*

Naomi stared at him.

"What does that mean?""

Daniel couldn't answer.

Because there was something about his wife's final night that he had never told his daughter.

May you like

Something that had nothing to do with business.

And everything to do with why Ashford House had been placed in her name.
