Chapter 8: The Warehouse at Midnight

Detective Harris immediately took control.

"Nobody moves without a plan.""

Daniel stood beside the conference table, staring at Evelyn's photograph.

He had known her since childhood.

She had been his mother's best friend, his family's unofficial aunt, and the person who had helped establish the trust when Naomi was still a little girl.

She was seventy-four years old.

And somebody had tied her to a chair.

Naomi approached her father.

"Is that really Evelyn?""

Daniel nodded.

"Yes.""

"Then we have to help her.""

"We will.""

Detective Harris studied the message.

"Mr. Carter, this could be a trap.""

"I understand.""

"They specifically requested the original trust certificate.""

Daniel looked toward James.

"Where is it?""

"In the corporate archive.""

"Can we retrieve it?""

"Yes, sir.""

Detective Harris raised her hand.

"Before we do anything, I want to make one thing clear. You are not walking into an unknown location to negotiate with people who may have kidnapped an elderly woman.""

Daniel nodded.

"Then what do you suggest?""

"We coordinate with our officers. We verify the location, establish a perimeter, and make sure the woman is brought out safely.""

Daniel looked at the photograph again.

"Agreed.""

Naomi took a deep breath.

"Can I see the message?""

Daniel handed her the phone.

She enlarged the photograph.

Evelyn's face was visible.

There was a small cut near her eyebrow.

Naomi remembered her from childhood.

Evelyn had been the woman who brought homemade peach cobbler to every family gathering. She had taught Naomi how to make biscuits and had once spent an entire afternoon helping her prepare for a school play.

She had called Naomi her little sunshine.

Naomi looked at her father.

"She helped you protect this hotel.""

Daniel nodded.

"She helped me protect your future.""

Naomi looked at the photograph again.

"Then we're not leaving her there.""

At 9:15 p.m., the police team gathered in a private security room.

Detective Harris reviewed the plan.

The old Carter warehouse stood several miles from downtown. It had been used years earlier for storing construction materials before the company moved its operations.

The building was mostly empty.

Two entrances.

One loading dock.

A narrow service road running behind it.

James had located the property through the company's records.

Detective Grant studied the map.

"We'll approach from the north and west. Nobody enters until we've confirmed the hostage's location.""

Daniel nodded.

"I want to speak to Anthony.""

Detective Harris looked at him.

"If he's there, you can speak to him after we secure the scene.""

Daniel accepted the answer.

Naomi stood near the doorway.

"What's going to happen to Elijah and me?""

Daniel turned.

"You'll stay here with two officers.""

She shook her head.

"I want to come.""

"No.""

"Dad—"

"Naomi, please.""

She looked at him.

"You keep telling me you're protecting me. But every time something happens, you make decisions without asking what I want.""

Daniel took a breath.

"This is dangerous.""

"So is staying here if they know where we live.""

Detective Harris stepped between them.

"Your daughter makes a fair point. We can arrange secure accommodation away from the warehouse.""

Daniel looked at Naomi.

"Promise me you'll stay with Elijah.""

She nodded.

"I will.""

He kissed the baby's forehead.

Then he looked at his daughter.

"I'll bring Evelyn home.""

At 10:06 p.m., the police convoy reached the warehouse.

Rain had begun falling.

The old brick building stood beneath a row of yellow security lights. Several windows were boarded up. A faded Carter Construction sign remained above the loading dock.

Daniel stepped out of the vehicle.

Detective Harris approached.

"Stay behind us.""

He nodded.

They moved toward the main entrance.

The door was unlocked.

Inside, the warehouse smelled of damp concrete and old timber.

A single overhead light illuminated a table in the center of the room.

And sitting behind it was Anthony Carter.

He wore a dark sweater and held a cup of coffee.

He looked remarkably calm.

"Daniel.""

Daniel stopped.

"Where is Evelyn?""

Anthony gestured toward the far side of the warehouse.

"She's safe.""

"Then let her go.""

Anthony sighed.

"You haven't changed.""

Daniel's jaw tightened.

"Neither have you.""

Anthony looked at the detectives.

"I assume these are your friends.""

Detective Harris stepped forward.

"Anthony Carter, we need you to remain where you are.""

Anthony smiled.

"Of course.""

Daniel looked around.

"Where's Richard?""

"He's not coming.""

"Where's Vanessa?""

"Not my concern.""

Daniel stared at him.

"How did we get here?""

Anthony leaned back.

"You want the truth?""

"Yes.""

"You became too comfortable.""

Daniel frowned.

"What?""

"You built Carter Hospitality. You made the decisions. You chose the properties. You decided who deserved a seat at the table.""

Anthony placed his coffee down.

"And I was always supposed to stand beside you.""

Daniel looked at his brother.

"You had half the company.""

"Half the company wasn't enough.""

"You were my partner.""

"I was your employee.""

Daniel shook his head.

"You were my brother.""

Anthony laughed bitterly.

"That's exactly the problem. You always thought family meant I should be grateful.""

Daniel stepped closer.

"Is that why you stole from me?""

Anthony's face hardened.

"I didn't steal anything. I corrected an arrangement that never should have existed.""

"Naomi's trust?""

"Your daughter doesn't understand business.""

"She understands right and wrong.""

Anthony stood.

"And you think you do?""

Daniel stared at him.

Anthony continued.

"Do you know how many times I saved this company while you were busy being a father? Do you know how many deals I negotiated? How many investors I brought in?""

"You were paid.""

"Not enough.""

Daniel looked toward the far side of the warehouse.

"Where is Evelyn?""

Anthony sighed.

"Always back to Evelyn.""

"Because she's the person you kidnapped.""

Anthony's expression changed.

"I didn't kidnap her.""

"Then why is she tied to a chair?""

A voice came from the darkness.

"Because he didn't want me talking.""

Everyone turned.

Evelyn Carter sat behind a stack of wooden pallets.

Her hands were tied, but she was conscious.

A police officer moved toward her.

Anthony immediately stood.

"Don't!""

Detective Harris raised her hand.

"Step away from the table.""

Anthony looked at Daniel.

"Tell them to stop.""

Daniel didn't move.

"Let her go.""

Anthony shook his head.

"You don't understand what she's carrying.""

Daniel frowned.

"What?""

Evelyn spoke from across the room.

"The original trust amendment.""

Anthony closed his eyes.

Daniel stared at her.

"What amendment?""

Evelyn looked directly at him.

"The one your mother made before she died.""

Daniel took a step forward.

"Why wasn't I told?""

Evelyn gave him a sad smile.

"Because your mother knew what Anthony would do.""

Anthony's voice rose.

"That's enough.""

Detective Grant moved toward him.

"Sir, remain where you are.""

Evelyn continued.

"Your mother knew that one day somebody might try to take this property away from Naomi. She created a second document that could not be accessed through the company's computer system.""

Daniel looked stunned.

"Where is it?""

Evelyn pointed toward the table.

Anthony moved suddenly.

He grabbed a folder and stepped backward.

Detective Harris immediately shouted.

"Put it down!""

Anthony froze.

The folder slipped from his fingers.

Daniel picked it up.

Inside was an old notarized document.

His mother's signature appeared on the final page.

He read the first paragraph.

Then the second.

And finally, the clause that changed everything.

His mother had transferred the permanent ownership rights of Ashford House into a protected family trust.

But she had also included a condition.

If anyone attempted to remove Naomi from ownership through fraud, coercion, or intimidation, the trust would become irrevocable.

No sale.

No transfer.

No outside acquisition.

Ever.

Daniel looked at Anthony.

"Did you know about this?""

Anthony said nothing.

Evelyn answered for him.

"He knew.""

Daniel stared at his brother.

"And you still went ahead?""

Anthony looked at the floor.

"I thought the document had been destroyed.""

Evelyn shook her head.

"Your mother gave me the original.""

Detective Harris approached Anthony.

"Anthony Carter, turn around and place your hands behind your back.""

Anthony looked at Daniel.

"You're really going to let them arrest me?""

Daniel's eyes filled with something between anger and grief.

"You brought armed men to frighten my daughter. You threatened my grandson. You kidnapped a seventy-four-year-old woman.""

Anthony swallowed.

"I didn't want anybody hurt.""

Daniel looked at him.

"Then you should have stopped.""

The detectives placed Anthony in handcuffs.

Evelyn was freed and immediately wrapped in a blanket.

Daniel approached her.

"I'm sorry.""

Evelyn touched his cheek.

"Don't apologize to me, Daniel.""

She looked at him sadly.

"Your mother would have wanted you to see this coming.""

Daniel lowered his head.

At 11:32 p.m., the police returned Evelyn to the hotel.

Naomi was waiting in the private lounge.

The moment she saw the elderly woman walk through the door, she hurried forward.

"Evelyn!""

Evelyn smiled weakly.

"Oh, my little sunshine.""

Naomi embraced her carefully.

"I was so scared.""

Evelyn touched her locs.

"I know, sweetheart.""

Naomi stepped back.

"Are you okay?""

"I will be.""

Daniel approached with the original trust amendment.

Evelyn looked at the document.

"Did you read it?""

"Yes.""

"And?""

Daniel glanced toward Naomi.

"Your mother made sure nobody could take this building from her.""

Evelyn nodded.

"She loved that place.""

Naomi looked between them.

"Then what happens now?""

Daniel smiled faintly.

"Now, we protect it.""

For the first time that evening, Naomi felt her shoulders relax.

But the relief lasted only a few minutes.

Detective Harris approached Daniel.

"Mr. Carter, there's something we need to discuss.""

Daniel turned.

"What?""

"We recovered Anthony's phone at the warehouse.""

"And?""

"We found several messages between him and Richard Whitmore.""

Daniel frowned.

"Was Richard involved in the kidnapping?""

"We're investigating that.""

The detective lowered her voice.

"But there's something more serious.""

She handed him a printed message.

It was sent by Richard at 8:42 p.m.

*The original plan failed. Proceed with the second option. The hotel must be closed before morning.*

Daniel looked up.

"What second option?""

Detective Harris handed him another page.

A list of scheduled maintenance instructions.

The hotel had been marked for an emergency shutdown at 6:00 a.m.

The reason?

A supposed structural safety failure.

Daniel read the document twice.

"This is fabricated.""

The detective nodded.

"We suspect that.""

Naomi looked at the paper.

"What happens if they close the hotel?""

Daniel's expression hardened.

"They can evacuate the guests, lock the building, and interfere with the property's operations while the ownership dispute is unresolved.""

Evelyn shook her head.

"Richard knows the trust is protected now.""

Daniel looked at her.

"Exactly.""

His phone rang.

A call from the hotel's night supervisor.

Daniel answered.

"What's happening?""

The supervisor's voice sounded frantic.

"Mr. Carter, there's a problem in the lobby.""

"What problem?""

"The fire alarm system has activated.""

Daniel stood.

"Is there a fire?""

"We don't know. But the building's emergency doors have locked, and the control panel is showing an unauthorized override.""

Daniel looked at Detective Harris.

"Get everyone out safely.""

Then he heard another voice in the background.

A woman screaming.

May you like

And a second later, the supervisor said something that made Daniel's blood run cold.

"Mr. Carter, I think someone is inside the building.""
