Chapter 6: The Woman Who Knew Everything

Daniel didn't move.

"Who does she say ordered it?""

The security officer looked uncomfortable.

"She won't tell us over the phone.""

"Then bring her somewhere private.""

"Mr. Carter, she says she has evidence.""

Daniel glanced at James.

"Let's go.""

Naomi stood immediately.

"I'm coming.""

Daniel turned.

"Sweetheart, you should stay here with Elijah.""

"No.""

"Naomi—"

"Dad, this started because somebody wanted me out of the building. I'm tired of sitting in rooms while everyone talks about my life.""

Daniel studied her face.

He saw the same determination her mother used to show whenever someone tried to make a decision for her.

He nodded.

"All right. But you stay beside me.""

Naomi adjusted Elijah's blanket.

"Okay.""

Angela Brooks was waiting near the service entrance.

She looked nothing like the confident executive assistant Daniel knew.

Her dark blue blouse was wrinkled, her hair was coming loose, and she held a leather document pouch against her chest.

The moment Daniel approached, she began crying.

"Mr. Carter.""

He stopped several feet away.

"Angela, what have you done?""

She lowered her eyes.

"I made a terrible mistake.""

Daniel's voice remained controlled.

"Did you give Richard Whitmore access to my private calendar?""

Angela nodded.

"Yes.""

"Did you provide him with my daughter's arrival time?""

"Yes.""

"Did you help him access the hotel transfer documents?""

She hesitated.

"Yes.""

Naomi stared at her.

"Why?""

Angela looked at Naomi.

"I'm sorry.""

"Why did you do it?""

Angela pressed the document pouch against her chest.

"Because I thought I was protecting my family.""

Daniel's expression didn't soften.

"From whom?""

Angela looked around.

Then she whispered:

"Richard Whitmore.""

Three weeks earlier, Angela had been contacted by Richard through a private business associate.

He offered her a consulting position with a salary nearly four times what she earned working for Daniel.

At first, she refused.

She had worked for Daniel for six years and knew how much he valued loyalty.

But Richard kept contacting her.

He knew her husband's name.

He knew where her children went to school.

And he knew about the debt her family had accumulated after her husband suffered a serious workplace injury.

He offered to make the debt disappear.

All she had to do was provide access to Daniel's schedule and help Richard obtain several internal documents.

Angela told herself she wasn't hurting anybody.

She was only sharing information.

But then Richard asked for something more.

He wanted the original ownership structure of Ashford House.

And he wanted to know whether Naomi had arrived in person to sign any documents.

Angela had asked why.

Richard told her that Daniel planned to transfer the property to his daughter.

He claimed it was a complicated tax arrangement.

He said Naomi's signature would be required for the final paperwork.

Angela believed him.

Until she discovered a different document.

A forged transfer agreement.

And a note explaining that Naomi had to be prevented from reaching the property before the signing deadline.

When Angela confronted Richard, he reminded her that he knew where her family lived.

Then he told her something that changed everything.

"If your daughter gets involved, you'll be responsible for what happens.""

Angela had spent the next two days collecting evidence.

She copied emails.

Saved text messages.

Downloaded the original property records.

And kept the documents in the pouch she was holding now.

She had intended to go to the police.

But when she learned that Naomi had been assaulted, she realized there was no time left.

Daniel listened without interrupting.

When Angela finished, he held out his hand.

"Let me see the documents.""

Angela opened the pouch.

Inside were printed emails, photographs, and several pages of financial records.

Daniel examined the first document.

It was an email from Richard to Marcus.

The subject line read:

*Ashford House — Friday Instructions.*

Daniel read the message.

Richard had instructed Marcus to ensure that Naomi did not enter the private administrative offices.

He had also instructed him to remove her from the premises before Daniel arrived.

The email contained one particularly disturbing sentence:

*If she becomes difficult, use the usual guest complaint procedure. We cannot afford her speaking with her father before the documents are signed.*

Naomi looked up.

"They knew I was coming.""

Angela nodded.

"Yes.""

"Why didn't they just tell me?""

Angela looked at her.

"Because they needed you to sign something.""

Naomi frowned.

"Sign what?""

Angela pulled out another document.

It was a property authorization form.

The form appeared to transfer Naomi's ownership interest in Ashford House to a private investment company.

Naomi examined the signature line.

Her name was already typed.

But the signature was blank.

Daniel took the paper.

"Where did you get this?""

"From Richard's office.""

"Why was it in your possession?""

"Because he wanted me to prepare it for your daughter.""

Naomi shook her head.

"I've never seen this before.""

Angela nodded.

"I know.""

Daniel looked at the company name.

Whitmore Capital Holdings.

Richard's private investment firm.

The document was dated the following morning.

And beneath the signature line was a statement claiming that Naomi had voluntarily agreed to transfer her ownership interest.

Daniel's jaw tightened.

"They intended to obtain her signature under false pretenses.""

Angela nodded.

"Richard told me he would present it as an inheritance confirmation document.""

Naomi stared at her father.

"Dad, why do I own this hotel?""

Daniel looked at her for a long moment.

Then he pulled out a chair.

"Sit down, sweetheart.""

She sat.

Daniel placed the ownership document on the table.

"Four years ago, when I bought this building, I had a reason for doing it.""

Naomi looked confused.

"Because you wanted another hotel?""

"Partly.""

He paused.

"But there was something else.""

Daniel reached into his briefcase and removed an older photograph.

It showed a much younger Naomi standing beside a woman with a warm smile.

Naomi recognized her immediately.

Her mother.

She hadn't seen that photograph in years.

"Your mother loved this building," Daniel said.

Naomi touched the photograph.

"What?""

"Before it became a hotel, this was where she worked. She was an assistant manager at the old Ashford Inn.""

Naomi looked at the picture again.

"Mom worked here?""

Daniel nodded.

"She used to tell me that the building was beautiful, but the owners treated the staff terribly. She wanted to turn it into a place where everyone felt welcome.""

He paused.

"When I bought it, I remembered what she said.""

Naomi's eyes filled.

"So you put it in my name?""

"Not entirely. Carter Hospitality operates the hotel. But the property itself belongs to a separate trust established for you.""

"Why didn't you tell me?""

Daniel gave her a sad smile.

"Because I wanted you to have something that couldn't be taken away by a business disagreement. I also didn't want you to feel obligated to work in my company.""

Naomi looked at the ownership documents.

For the first time, she understood why Richard had been so desperate to remove her.

She wasn't just a guest.

She was the person who legally controlled the building he wanted.

James entered the room.

"Mr. Carter, we have a problem.""

Daniel looked up.

"What now?""

"Marcus Bennett has disappeared.""

Angela covered her mouth.

Daniel stood.

"When?""

"About five minutes ago. He left through the underground parking area.""

"Did security stop him?""

"We attempted to contact him, but his phone is switched off.""

Daniel looked toward the lobby.

"Where is Richard?""

James hesitated.

"He's still here.""

"Good. Keep him in the building until the police arrive.""

James nodded.

Then his phone rang.

He answered.

Listened.

And his expression changed.

"Mr. Carter...""

Daniel looked at him.

"What?""

"The original transfer agreement is missing.""

Daniel stared.

"Missing from where?""

"Your private administrative office.""

"Who had access?""

James looked down at the security report.

"Marcus Bennett.""

Daniel closed his eyes briefly.

The manager hadn't simply disappeared.

He had taken the original document.

The document that could expose the entire fraudulent transaction.

And if Richard obtained it, he could attempt to complete the transfer before anyone stopped him.

Daniel turned toward Naomi.

"Stay with Angela. I'm going to deal with Richard.""

Naomi stood.

"Dad, wait.""

He turned.

"What is it?""

She looked at the photograph of her mother, then at the ownership document.

"Don't let them turn this place into something Mom would have hated.""

Daniel's expression softened.

"I won't.""

He walked toward the door.

But before he reached it, his phone rang.

An unknown number.

He answered.

A man's voice came through.

"Mr. Carter, I have something that belongs to you.""

Daniel stopped.

"Who is this?""

A quiet laugh.

"Let's just say I'm the man holding the original deed.""

Daniel's eyes narrowed.

"Marcus?""

"You're a smart man.""

"Where are you?""

"That isn't important. What matters is that your daughter signs the transfer document tomorrow morning.""

Daniel's voice dropped.

"She will not sign anything.""

Marcus laughed again.

"Then perhaps you should ask her what happens if she doesn't.""

Daniel glanced toward Naomi.

"What are you talking about?""

Marcus lowered his voice.

"Your daughter has until nine tomorrow morning. After that, the original deed disappears, and the people who funded this deal will make sure you never get it back.""

The call ended.

Daniel stared at his phone.

Then another message appeared.

A photograph.

Naomi's old family home.

The front gate.

The driveway.

And a black vehicle parked outside.

Daniel's face turned pale.

Because the message beneath the photograph contained only seven words:

*We know where your daughter and grandson live.*

Naomi saw the photograph.

Her hand immediately tightened around Elijah.

"Dad...""

Daniel looked at James.

"Call the police. Now.""

But before James could move, Angela suddenly spoke.

"Mr. Carter, there's something I haven't told you.""

Daniel turned.

"What?""

Angela looked terrified.

"Richard didn't come up with this plan alone.""

She reached into the document pouch and removed one final photograph.

It showed Richard Whitmore standing beside another man.

A man Daniel had trusted for more than twenty years.

His own older brother.

*And the man who had helped him build Carter Hospitality from nothing.*

Daniel stared at the photograph.

Then he whispered a name.

"Anthony...""

The brother who had been missing from the family for six months.

The brother who had supposedly retired.

The brother who knew every password, every property, and every secret Daniel had ever kept.

May you like

And suddenly, the betrayal was much bigger than a hotel.

It was family.
