Chapter 3: The Footage Nobody Was Supposed to See

Daniel stepped away from the velvet chairs and called his security director.

"James, tell me exactly what you found.""

James Miller had worked for Carter Hospitality for eleven years. He was responsible for corporate security, incident investigations, and protecting the company's properties.

His voice sounded unusually cautious.

"Mr. Carter, we recovered footage from three cameras.""

"Good.""

"The first camera shows your daughter entering the building. She approaches reception, speaks briefly with the receptionist, and then moves toward the seating area.""

"Continue.""

"The second camera shows Mrs. Whitmore approaching her.""

Daniel looked across the lobby.

Vanessa was now standing near the elevators, typing furiously on her phone.

"What happens next?""

"Mrs. Whitmore appears to initiate the confrontation. Your daughter moves away twice.""

Daniel closed his eyes briefly.

"And the slap?""

"Clear as day.""

"Can you send me the footage?""

"Already sent it to your secure device.""

Daniel opened the attachment.

The video was silent, but he didn't need audio to understand what had happened.

He watched Naomi stand near the reception desk.

He watched Vanessa approach.

He watched his daughter step aside.

Then he watched Vanessa follow her.

The slap came less than a minute later.

Daniel's fingers tightened around his phone.

"James.""

"Yes, sir?""

"I want the original footage preserved. Not just the edited clips.""

"Understood.""

"And I want the entire incident documented.""

There was a brief pause.

"There's something else, sir.""

Daniel looked at the screen.

"What?""

"The footage from the service corridor.""

"What about it?""

"It shows Mrs. Whitmore speaking with the manager approximately fifteen minutes before the incident.""

Daniel's eyebrows drew together.

"Speaking about what?""

"We haven't established that yet. But they appear to exchange something.""

Daniel turned toward Marcus.

The manager was standing behind the reception desk, speaking with an employee.

"Send me that footage too.""

"I will.""

Daniel ended the call.

Naomi watched her father approach.

"Is everything okay?""

Daniel sat beside her.

"I don't know yet.""

She looked worried.

"What's happening?""

"I need to ask you something. Did that woman recognize you before she slapped you?""

Naomi thought about it.

"No. I don't think so.""

"Did she know you were meeting me?""

"No.""

"Did you mention my name?""

"I told her my father was coming. I didn't say who you were.""

Daniel nodded.

"All right.""

Naomi looked down at Elijah.

"Why?""

Daniel hesitated.

"Because I don't think this was just a disagreement.""

Naomi looked up.

"What do you mean?""

"There's something on the security footage I need to understand.""

Before he could explain, a loud voice interrupted them.

"Mr. Carter!""

Vanessa had approached with her handbag hanging from her shoulder.

She looked irritated.

"I've been waiting long enough.""

Daniel stood.

"What do you need?""

"I need you to tell your staff to stop treating me like a suspect.""

Daniel looked toward the receptionist.

"Has anyone treated you disrespectfully?""

Vanessa's eyes narrowed.

"Don't play games with me.""

"I'm asking a question.""

"I've been a loyal guest here. I expect better.""

Daniel nodded.

"Then you should understand why we're documenting an assault that happened in my lobby.""

Vanessa laughed.

"Assault? You're making this sound like some major crime.""

Naomi looked at her.

"You hit me.""

Vanessa turned.

"Will you stop repeating that?""

"Why? Because it's true?""

Vanessa stepped closer.

"Listen, little girl—"

Daniel immediately moved between them.

"Don't speak to my daughter that way.""

Vanessa stopped.

For a moment, her expression hardened.

Then she looked at Daniel's suit and briefcase.

"Do you really think your money makes you untouchable?""

Daniel studied her.

"No. I think it makes people forget that their actions have consequences.""

Vanessa's phone rang.

She checked the screen.

Her expression changed.

"Richard.""

She answered immediately.

"Where are you?""

A pause.

"What do you mean you're outside?""

Vanessa looked toward the glass doors.

A silver luxury sedan had pulled up.

A man in his mid-forties stepped out.

Richard Whitmore wore a navy suit, an expensive watch, and the expression of someone who expected people to move when he entered a room.

He walked into the hotel while speaking into his phone.

"Vanessa, I told you not to create problems while I'm working.""

Vanessa hurried toward him.

"Richard, you need to listen.""

He lowered the phone.

"What happened?""

"That woman over there attacked me.""

Richard looked at Naomi.

Then he noticed Daniel.

His expression changed.

"Daniel Carter?""

Daniel gave a brief nod.

"Richard.""

Richard looked between them.

"What's going on?""

Vanessa immediately answered.

"His daughter caused a scene, and now he's threatening me because I defended myself.""

Naomi stared at her.

"That's not what happened.""

Richard sighed.

"Vanessa, perhaps we should discuss this privately.""

"No. I'm not leaving until they apologize.""

Daniel remained still.

"Your wife struck my daughter.""

Richard looked at Vanessa.

"Is that true?""

Vanessa hesitated.

"She was disrespectful.""

Richard's eyes narrowed.

"That's not what I asked.""

Vanessa lowered her voice.

"Richard, not here.""

Daniel watched them carefully.

Something about their exchange seemed rehearsed.

He had seen it before in boardrooms: people who were less concerned about what happened than about who might find out.

Richard turned back toward Daniel.

"I apologize for the misunderstanding.""

Daniel didn't move.

"An apology doesn't change what happened.""

"Of course. We'll take care of any medical expenses.""

Naomi looked at him.

"I don't want your money.""

Richard nodded.

"Then perhaps we can arrange something else.""

Daniel's expression became colder.

"My daughter isn't negotiating a settlement with you.""

Richard adjusted his jacket.

"Let's not make this bigger than it needs to be.""

Daniel looked directly at him.

"Your wife struck a mother holding a newborn. My manager attempted to remove her instead of helping her. It is already bigger than it needs to be.""

Richard glanced at Marcus.

"What manager?""

Marcus stepped forward.

"Mr. Whitmore.""

Richard gave him a brief nod.

Then he turned toward Daniel.

"I understand your frustration. But I'm sure we can handle this discreetly.""

Daniel said nothing.

Richard continued.

"My company has been discussing several opportunities with your organization. I would hate for an unfortunate incident to complicate those discussions.""

Naomi looked at her father.

"Wait. Is he threatening you?""

Daniel didn't answer immediately.

Richard smiled.

"I'm simply saying that business relationships are important.""

Daniel finally spoke.

"Then you should have considered that before your wife assaulted someone in my hotel.""

Richard's smile disappeared.

Vanessa grabbed his arm.

"Richard, tell him.""

"Tell him what?""

"About the agreement.""

Richard looked at her sharply.

"Not now.""

Vanessa pulled her arm away.

"Why not? You said this hotel would be ours.""

The words hung in the air.

Daniel slowly turned toward her.

"What did you just say?""

Richard's face tightened.

"Vanessa, stop talking.""

But she was already upset.

"You told me the acquisition was practically finished. You said we would be running this place by Christmas.""

Naomi looked at her father.

"Acquisition?""

Daniel stared at Richard.

"Interesting.""

Richard took a step forward.

"She's confused about a separate business discussion.""

Daniel's phone vibrated again.

Another message from James.

This time, there was an attachment.

Daniel opened it.

The service-corridor footage showed Marcus standing near the staff entrance.

Vanessa approached him.

She handed him a folded piece of paper.

Marcus looked around before slipping it into his jacket.

Then Vanessa pointed toward the lobby.

Toward the exact area where Naomi would later be standing.

Daniel replayed the clip.

Once.

Twice.

His face became expressionless.

"Marcus.""

The manager approached nervously.

"Yes, sir?""

Daniel held up his phone.

"Would you like to explain this?""

Marcus looked at the screen.

His mouth opened.

Nothing came out.

Richard stepped closer.

"What is that?""

Daniel turned the phone so he could see.

Richard watched the footage.

Then he looked at his wife.

Vanessa suddenly looked frightened.

"That doesn't mean anything.""

Daniel raised his eyes.

"Then explain it.""

"It was just a note.""

"What was in the note?""

Vanessa looked toward Marcus.

The manager shook his head slightly.

Daniel noticed.

And so did Naomi.

"What's going on?"" she asked.

Nobody answered.

Daniel turned toward his security director, who had just entered the lobby.

"James, I want the full recording of this conversation preserved.""

James nodded.

"Already secured, sir.""

Daniel looked at Marcus.

"Empty your pockets.""

Marcus went pale.

"Mr. Carter?""

"You heard me.""

Richard suddenly raised his voice.

"This is outrageous. You cannot search an employee in front of guests.""

Daniel didn't look at him.

"James.""

The security director stepped closer.

"Mr. Bennett, please cooperate.""

Marcus slowly reached into his jacket.

He removed his phone, a wallet, and a folded piece of paper.

Daniel took the paper.

He unfolded it.

Three handwritten lines appeared beneath a hotel letterhead.

The first line contained Naomi's name.

The second contained the time of her scheduled arrival.

And the third read:

*Make sure she is removed before Daniel gets here.*

Naomi stared at the paper.

Her lips parted.

"Dad...""

Daniel looked at her.

For several seconds, he couldn't find the words.

Then he turned toward Marcus.

"Who gave you this instruction?""

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

Vanessa looked at Richard.

And Richard, for the first time since entering the hotel, seemed genuinely afraid.

Because the next words out of Marcus's mouth would reveal that the slap in the lobby hadn't been an accident.

May you like

It had been planned.

And the person who ordered it wasn't the woman wearing the fuchsia dress.
