Chapter 4: The Order Behind the Slap

Nobody spoke.

The folded piece of paper remained in Daniel Carter's hand.

Three lines.

Three deliberate instructions.

And Naomi's name written across the top.

She stared at the handwriting, trying to understand why anyone would have known she was coming before she arrived.

"Dad," she whispered, "what does this mean?""

Daniel folded the paper carefully.

"It means somebody knew you were coming.""

"Who?""

He looked toward Marcus.

"That's what we're about to find out.""

Marcus Bennett stood behind the reception desk, his face pale beneath the warm lobby lighting. His perfectly arranged tie suddenly looked too tight. He kept glancing at Richard Whitmore, as if waiting for someone to tell him what to say.

Richard noticed.

"Marcus, don't say anything.""

Daniel turned.

"Excuse me?""

Richard cleared his throat.

"This is an internal employee matter. You're making accusations without understanding the circumstances.""

Daniel held up the paper.

"Your wife's name is connected to an incident involving my daughter. My manager received written instructions to remove her before I arrived. And you want me to believe this is an ordinary employee matter?""

Vanessa stepped forward.

"Nobody told him to hurt your daughter.""

Naomi looked at her.

"Then why did you hit me?""

Vanessa opened her mouth.

Daniel raised his hand.

"One question at a time.""

He turned to Marcus.

"Who gave you this?""

Marcus swallowed.

"Mr. Carter, I can explain.""

"Then explain.""

"I was told there might be a disturbance involving a woman arriving with a baby.""

"By whom?""

Marcus glanced at Richard.

Richard's voice sharpened.

"Marcus.""

Daniel took one step closer.

"Look at me when you answer.""

Marcus finally met his eyes.

"Mrs. Whitmore brought me the note.""

Vanessa's expression hardened.

"That's a lie.""

Marcus shook his head.

"You told me she was going to cause problems.""

"I told you there might be a security concern!""

"You told me to make sure she didn't stay.""

Vanessa's voice rose.

"Because you were supposed to be doing your job!""

Naomi shifted Elijah against her shoulder.

"Dad, why would she know I was coming?""

Daniel looked at the paper again.

That was the question that mattered.

He had told only three people about Naomi's visit.

His executive assistant.

The hotel's general manager.

And someone who had access to his personal calendar.

Daniel turned toward James Miller.

"James, I need you to check the scheduling records. Find out who accessed my appointment calendar this morning.""

"Yes, sir.""

"And preserve the hotel's internal messages.""

James nodded.

Richard stepped forward.

"Daniel, I think we're getting carried away.""

Daniel looked at him.

"Your wife knew my daughter was coming. She arranged for my manager to remove her. Then she assaulted her before I arrived.""

Richard shook his head.

"Vanessa can be emotional. That's no secret. But you're suggesting some elaborate conspiracy.""

Daniel didn't blink.

"I'm not suggesting anything. I'm looking at evidence.""

Vanessa folded her arms.

"You have no proof that I planned the slap.""

Naomi spoke quietly.

"You didn't have to plan the slap. You just had to decide I wasn't worth protecting.""

Vanessa turned toward her.

"Oh, don't start acting like some innocent victim.""

Daniel moved between them.

"That's enough.""

He looked at James.

"Take Mr. Bennett's statement. Separately. I want a written account from every employee who was present.""

Marcus nodded quickly.

"Of course.""

Daniel looked at him.

"Not because you're helping me. Because you need to explain why you participated.""

Marcus's shoulders dropped.

"Yes, sir.""

Twenty minutes later, the hotel conference room had become an informal investigation center.

Naomi sat near the window with Elijah sleeping against her chest.

A female employee had brought her a clean blanket, water, and a small cushion.

Daniel stood near the conference table, reviewing the preliminary security footage on a large monitor.

James had connected his laptop.

"Mr. Carter, we found the original calendar entry.""

"Who accessed it?""

James hesitated.

"Your executive assistant's account.""

Daniel frowned.

"Which assistant?""

"Angela Brooks.""

Daniel looked away from the screen.

Angela had worked for him for six years.

She knew his schedule, his business arrangements, his travel plans, and his family's personal appointments.

He had trusted her with nearly everything.

"Call her.""

James made the call.

It went to voicemail.

Daniel tried again.

Nothing.

Naomi noticed his expression.

"What's wrong?""

"Someone with access to my calendar shared your arrival time.""

"Could it have been a mistake?""

Daniel looked at his daughter.

"I hope so.""

He returned to the footage.

"James, go back thirty seconds.""

The recording showed Vanessa entering the staff corridor.

She approached Marcus.

She handed him the folded note.

Then she pointed toward the lobby.

James paused the video.

"There's something interesting here.""

"What?""

"Look at the time.""

Daniel checked the timestamp.

2:08 p.m.

"That's twelve minutes before Naomi entered the building.""

James nodded.

"And look at the second camera.""

He switched feeds.

The second recording showed Richard Whitmore entering through the hotel's side entrance at 2:05 p.m.

He walked toward the private elevator.

Three minutes later, he emerged and approached the front desk.

Daniel stared at the screen.

"Was he staying here?""

"No, sir. He wasn't registered as a guest.""

"Then why was he using the private elevator?""

James enlarged the image.

Richard was carrying a thin black folder.

He entered the corridor.

And when he came out, the folder was gone.

Daniel looked toward James.

"Find out what was inside that folder.""

"We're checking the corridor cameras now.""

At that moment, Naomi's phone vibrated.

She looked at the screen.

An unknown number.

A text message appeared.

*You need to leave the hotel. Your father doesn't know what you're getting involved in.*

Naomi frowned.

Another message followed.

*Ask him what happened to the last person who tried to expose Richard Whitmore.*

Her stomach tightened.

"Dad?""

Daniel turned immediately.

"What is it?""

She handed him the phone.

He read the messages.

His expression changed.

"James.""

"Yes, sir?""

"Trace the source of this message through our security team. Preserve it. Don't respond.""

Naomi looked frightened.

"Do you know what they're talking about?""

Daniel stared at the screen.

"No.""

But his voice lacked certainty.

And Naomi noticed.

"Dad, what aren't you telling me?""

Before Daniel could answer, his phone rang.

The caller ID displayed a name he hadn't expected to see.

Angela Brooks.

He answered.

"Angela.""

Her voice was shaky.

"Mr. Carter, I need to speak to you.""

"Where are you?""

"Not on the phone.""

Daniel looked at James.

"Why did you access my personal calendar this morning?""

Silence.

Then Angela whispered:

"Because someone told me your daughter wasn't supposed to reach that hotel today.""

Daniel's face hardened.

"Who?""

Angela inhaled sharply.

"Mr. Carter, it was—"

The call disconnected.

Daniel stared at the phone.

A second later, another notification appeared.

This time, it was a photograph.

Angela Brooks standing outside the hotel.

And behind her, partially visible through the glass, was a man Daniel recognized.

Richard Whitmore.

May you like

But what made Daniel's blood run cold was the timestamp.

The photograph had been taken less than two minutes earlier.
