Chapter 7: The Brother Who Sold His Own Family
Daniel Carter stared at the photograph.
For several seconds, the noise of the hotel seemed to disappear.
The brass lamps continued glowing. The receptionist continued typing. Somewhere in the lobby, a guest laughed at something on his phone.
But Daniel heard none of it.
He was looking at Anthony.
His older brother.
The man who had stood beside him at their mother's funeral. The man who had helped him sign the first business agreement when Carter Hospitality was nothing more than a small family investment.
The man who had promised their mother that he would always protect the family.
And now, apparently, the man who had helped Richard Whitmore steal from them.
Daniel slowly lowered the photograph.
"Where did you get this?""
Angela stood near the conference room door, clutching the empty document pouch.
"From Richard's office. It was inside a folder marked confidential.""
"When was this taken?""
"About three weeks ago.""
Daniel examined the photograph again.
Anthony was wearing a dark suit. Richard stood beside him, smiling.
Between them was a large architectural drawing of Ashford House.
Daniel recognized the conference room in the background.
It was inside the headquarters of Carter Hospitality.
"Did you hear them discussing the hotel?""
Angela nodded.
"I heard Mr. Whitmore say the transfer would be completed once your daughter signed the authorization.""
"And Anthony?""
"He said something about the trust.""
Daniel's jaw tightened.
"What exactly?""
Angela hesitated.
"He said Naomi wouldn't know what she was signing.""
Naomi looked up from the chair.
"What?""
Angela turned toward her.
"I'm sorry.""
"No. Tell me exactly what he said.""
Angela swallowed.
"He said you were young, distracted by the baby, and unlikely to read the paperwork carefully.""
Naomi looked down at Elijah.
For a moment, she couldn't speak.
Her own uncle had apparently been discussing her as if she were an obstacle rather than a person.
Daniel walked toward the window.
He remembered the last time he had spoken to Anthony.
Six months earlier.
Anthony had visited his office and complained that Daniel was becoming too protective of the family trust.
"You can't keep treating Naomi like a child," Anthony had said.
"She's my daughter.""
"She's twenty-nine. She needs to learn how the real world works.""
Daniel had dismissed the conversation.
Now he wondered whether Anthony had been planning this for years.
James entered the room.
"Mr. Carter, the police are on their way.""
Daniel turned.
"Good. I want them to have copies of everything.""
James nodded.
"There's another development.""
"What?""
"We traced the vehicle from the photograph outside Naomi's house.""
Daniel's expression hardened.
"Who owns it?""
"An employee of Whitmore Capital Holdings.""
Naomi immediately stood.
"Does that mean somebody went to my house?""
James looked uncomfortable.
"The vehicle was parked outside for approximately twelve minutes. We don't know whether anyone approached the property.""
Naomi tightened her hold on Elijah.
Daniel moved toward her.
"You're not going home tonight.""
"Dad, I don't want to be a prisoner.""
"You're not. You're my daughter, and I'm making sure you're safe.""
She shook her head.
"I have a baby. I have a life. I can't just disappear because some men are having a business fight.""
Daniel gently touched her shoulder.
"This isn't just business anymore.""
Naomi looked at him.
"Then stop treating it like business.""
The words landed harder than she intended.
Daniel lowered his hand.
She continued.
"Somebody slapped me while I was holding your grandson. Your manager tried to throw me out. Now we're finding out my own uncle might be involved.""
Her voice trembled.
"I don't need another meeting, Dad. I need my father.""
Daniel looked at her.
The anger in his face softened.
He pulled her into a careful embrace, mindful of the baby.
"I'm here, sweetheart.""
Naomi closed her eyes.
"Then stay with me.""
"I will.""
An hour later, two police detectives arrived.
Detective Olivia Harris was a woman in her early forties with a calm voice and an observant expression. Her partner, Detective Michael Grant, carried a notebook and a small recording device.
They interviewed Naomi first.
Naomi described the confrontation from the beginning.
She explained how Vanessa had approached her, how she had tried to move away, and how the manager had ignored her complaint.
Detective Harris listened without interruption.
When Naomi finished, the detective looked at her cheek.
"Have you received medical attention?""
"Not yet.""
"We'll arrange for someone to examine you. And we'll need a copy of the security footage.""
Daniel handed James a folder.
"Everything is preserved.""
Detective Grant examined the photographs and emails.
"This appears to involve more than an assault.""
Daniel nodded.
"I believe there's an attempted fraudulent property transfer.""
"Do you have documentation?""
"Yes.""
Angela stepped forward.
"I can provide the original correspondence.""
Detective Harris looked at her.
"Then we'll need a formal statement from you.""
Angela nodded.
"I understand.""
The detectives spent another forty minutes reviewing the evidence.
When they reached the photograph of Anthony and Richard, Detective Grant looked up.
"Is this your brother?""
Daniel nodded.
"Anthony Carter.""
"Have you spoken with him recently?""
"No.""
"Do you know where he is?""
Daniel shook his head.
Detective Harris placed the photograph on the table.
"Mr. Carter, we're going to need to establish whether your brother participated in the alleged fraud.""
Daniel stared at the photograph.
"He didn't just participate. He knew exactly how the company worked.""
Detective Harris made a note.
"Then we need to find him.""
At 8:17 p.m., Daniel received a call.
Anthony.
He stared at the screen.
Naomi noticed.
"Is that him?""
Daniel nodded.
"Answer it," she said.
He pressed the button.
"Anthony.""
His brother's familiar voice filled the room.
"Daniel. We need to talk.""
Daniel looked toward the detectives.
"I'm listening.""
Anthony sighed.
"I hear you've been making accusations about Richard.""
"Are they false?""
"You're making a complicated business transaction sound like a crime.""
Daniel laughed without humor.
"A forged signature is a crime.""
"Nobody forged anything.""
"Then why did you tell Richard my daughter wouldn't know what she was signing?""
Silence.
Anthony finally spoke.
"Angela has been exaggerating.""
Daniel's expression hardened.
"Angela has provided documents.""
"Documents can be manipulated.""
"Where are you?""
"That isn't important.""
"It is to me.""
Anthony lowered his voice.
"Listen, Daniel. You've always been sentimental. You built an empire and then started giving everything away because you couldn't let go of the past.""
Daniel glanced at Naomi.
"What does that have to do with Ashford House?""
"That property is worth more than you think. The trust structure is inefficient. Richard has investors willing to make a legitimate offer.""
"Then why not make one?""
"Because you would refuse.""
"Exactly.""
Anthony sighed.
"You're making a mistake.""
Daniel looked at the detectives.
"Is that a threat?""
"No. It's advice from your brother.""
Daniel's voice became quiet.
"Did you send someone to my daughter's house?""
Anthony didn't answer.
"Anthony?""
"Your daughter should stay out of matters she doesn't understand.""
Daniel's face hardened.
"She's the legal owner of the property.""
"She's a young mother. She doesn't need this responsibility.""
"That's not your decision.""
Anthony paused.
Then he said something that made Daniel's stomach tighten.
"You really think I wanted to hurt Naomi?""
"I don't know what you wanted anymore.""
"I wanted to save the company.""
Daniel looked at him.
"From what?""
"From you.""
The call ended.
For several seconds, Daniel remained motionless.
Detective Harris stepped closer.
"Did he threaten you?""
"Not directly.""
"Did he admit involvement?""
Daniel shook his head.
"He admitted knowing about the transaction.""
The detective nodded.
"That's important.""
James approached with another document.
"Mr. Carter, there's something else you should see.""
Daniel looked at him.
"What?""
"We checked the original trust records.""
James placed the document on the table.
"The trust was established four years ago. But the beneficiary designation contains an additional clause.""
Daniel read it.
His eyebrows lifted.
"What is this?""
James pointed to a paragraph near the bottom.
"Your daughter has an independent veto over any transfer of the property. Even if the operating company agrees to sell, the property cannot be transferred without her written approval.""
Naomi looked at her father.
"So they needed my signature.""
Daniel nodded.
"Yes.""
James continued.
"But there's another clause. If anyone attempts to transfer the property through fraudulent authorization, control of the trust temporarily passes to an independent trustee.""
Detective Harris looked up.
"Who is the trustee?""
Daniel read the name.
Then he sat down.
It was a name he hadn't seen in years.
*Evelyn Carter.*
His late mother's closest friend.
And according to the trust agreement, the only person who could immediately block the proposed transfer without Daniel's approval.
Naomi looked at the document.
"Where is she?""
Daniel slowly raised his eyes.
"I don't know.""
Then his phone vibrated.
A message from an unfamiliar number appeared.
*If you want to stop Anthony, come to the old Carter warehouse at 10 p.m. Bring Naomi's original trust certificate. Come alone.*
Daniel showed the detectives.
Detective Harris immediately shook her head.
"You're not going anywhere alone.""
Daniel looked toward Naomi.
But before he could answer, another message arrived.
This one contained a photograph.
It showed an elderly Black woman sitting in a chair inside a dark room.
Her hands were tied.
Naomi covered her mouth.
Daniel recognized her instantly.
"Evelyn.""
The woman who could stop the transfer.
May you like
The woman who knew the truth about the trust.
And the woman Anthony appeared to have taken hostage.
