Chapter 2: The Recording She Never Wanted Me To Find

The footage was grainy, but it was clear enough.

The date appeared in the corner.

March 17.

I remembered that day.

I was stationed overseas.

I had called Emily during my short break.

She didn’t answer.

Later, she texted me:

Sorry. Fell asleep early. Love you.

I believed her.

I had no reason not to.

Until now.

On the screen, my front door opened.

Emily walked inside.

She wasn’t alone.

My stomach tightened.

The person behind her stepped into view.

I stopped breathing.

“Mom?”” I whispered.

My mother.

Linda.

My own mother walked into my house while I was thousands of miles away.

Emily stared at the floor.

I looked at her.

“You told me she never came here.””

“She didn’t come for long.””

“That’s not what I asked.””

Emily’s eyes filled with tears.

“James, please.””

But I couldn’t stop watching.

My mother carried a small bag.

She sat at the kitchen table.

Emily sat across from her.

The baby wasn’t there.

Not yet.

The recording continued.

My mother leaned forward.

Even without sound, I could tell she was serious.

I increased the volume.

Static filled the room.

Then my mother’s voice came through.

“You can’t keep lying forever.””

Emily looked nervous.

“I’m not lying.””

My mother laughed bitterly.

“Yes, you are.””

I stepped backward.

“What is this?””

Emily covered her mouth.

The footage continued.

My mother placed something on the table.

A folder.

Emily looked at it.

Then immediately pushed it away.

“I can’t do this.””

My mother replied:

“You already did.””

I turned away from the screen.

“Explain.””

Emily didn’t answer.

“Explain, Emily.””

Her shoulders shook.

“I was going to.””

“When?””

She looked at me.

“I don’t know.””

That answer hurt more than anything.

Not because it meant she had secrets.

Because it meant she had accepted living with them.

I looked back at the screen.

The video jumped ahead.

April.

May.

June.

Emily meeting my mother again.

Then July.

A hospital.

I felt cold.

“Was that a pregnancy appointment?””

Emily closed her eyes.

“Yes.””

My voice became quiet.

“You were pregnant?””

She didn’t respond.

I already knew.

The silence was enough.

“How long?””

“James…”

“How long were you pregnant?””

She whispered:

“Seven months when you came home.””

My chest tightened.

Seven months.

I had been away fourteen months.

The math was impossible.

Unless…

Unless she had been with someone else.

I looked at the baby.

The baby looked peaceful.

Completely unaware that the adults around him had built a world of lies.

“Who is his father?””

Emily started crying.

“I don’t know.””

I stared at her.

“You don’t know?””

“It’s complicated.””

I almost laughed.

A painful, empty laugh.

“Complicated?””

I pointed at the screen.

“My wife had a baby while I was deployed. My mother knew. You hid it. And your explanation is that it’s complicated?””

Emily walked closer.

“James, listen to me.””

“No.””

“Please.””

“No.””

My voice cracked.

“I missed birthdays. Holidays. My father’s surgery.

I slept in mud. I watched people beside me get hurt. Every night I thought about coming home to you.””

Tears rolled down her face.

“I know.””

“No, you don’t.””

The room became silent.

Then the baby started crying again.

Emily immediately picked him up.

The way she held him was gentle.

Protective.

Like a mother.

That somehow made everything worse.

Because whatever the truth was…

She loved this child.

A knock came from the front door.

Emily froze.

I looked at her.

“You expecting someone?””

“No.””

Another knock.

Stronger this time.

I walked toward the door.

Emily grabbed my arm.

“Don’t.””

I looked down at her hand.

“Why?””

Her eyes were filled with panic.

“Because he’s here.””

“Who?””

The door opened before she answered.

A man stood outside.

Tall.

Dark hair.

Military jacket.

My hands went cold.

Because I knew him.

I had served with him.

And he looked at me with the same expression the plumber had.

A strange smile.

“Hey, James.””

My heart sank.

“Ryan?””

My former teammate stepped inside.

May you like

And then he said the words that destroyed everything.

“I guess Emily finally told you about our son.””
