Chapter 6: The Man Behind The Lie

The silence after my mother’s words felt heavier than anything I had experienced overseas.

For fourteen months, I had lived with explosions, alarms, and uncertainty.

But nothing prepared me for hearing my own mother’s voice tell me that the man who raised me had not died the way I believed.

I stared at Mark.

He looked back at me.

Not surprised.

Not confused.

Like he already knew exactly what my mother was going to say.

“James?”” my mother asked through the phone.

I couldn’t speak.

My fingers tightened around the device.

“What did you just say?””

A shaky breath came from the other end.

“I said your father didn’t die naturally.””

The room seemed to shrink.

Emily covered her mouth.

Ryan stepped away from the window.

Even the baby became quiet.

Mark slowly stood.

“Your mother shouldn’t have called you.””

I looked at him.

“You knew?””

His expression changed.

Not guilt.

Something worse.

Regret.

“I knew something was wrong.””

I laughed once.

A cold, empty sound.

“Everyone knew something was wrong except me.””

“James—”

“No.””

My voice cut through the kitchen.

“No more half-truths. No more protecting me by lying to me.””

I looked at Mark.

“You said you knew my father.””

“I did.””

“You said he was fixing the clinic mistake.””

“He was.””

“You said he wanted me to know the truth.””

“He did.””

“Then why did my mother tell me not to trust you?””

Mark looked down.

Because he didn’t have an answer.

That was the first time I saw him look afraid.

I put the phone on speaker.

“Mom, explain.””

There was a pause.

Then her voice came through.

“James, I need you to leave that house.””

My eyes moved around the room.

“Why?””

“Because the person who destroyed your father’s work may still be there.””

Nobody moved.

Nobody breathed.

I looked at Emily.

Her face was pale.

I looked at Ryan.

His jaw was tight.

Then I looked at Mark.

“You.””

Mark shook his head.

“No.””

“Then who?””

My mother answered.

“Your wife’s family.””

Emily flinched.

“What?””

My mother continued.

“James, I’m sorry. I should have told you years ago.””

I looked at Emily.

“What does my wife’s family have to do with my father?””

Emily looked devastated.

“I don’t know.””

But again, I saw it.

That tiny hesitation.

The same hesitation she had every time she was hiding something.

“Emily.””

She closed her eyes.

“I know my father worked with a medical company.””

“What company?””

She swallowed.

“Carter Medical Research.””

My stomach dropped.

“My father’s foundation.””

She nodded.

“They were connected.””

Mark stepped forward.

“Not just connected.””

Everyone looked at him.

Mark took a breath.

“Your father’s foundation funded the fertility clinic. Emily’s father was one of the executives.””

The room went silent.

I stared at my wife.

“You knew our families were connected?””

“I knew my father worked with your father.””

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because I didn’t think it mattered.””

I looked at her.

“Everything matters now.””

The baby started crying.

Emily immediately picked him up.

Her expression softened.

For a second, I saw the woman I married.

The woman who held my hand when my father died.

The woman who cried when I left for deployment.

Then I remembered the secrets.

The lies.

The missing months.

The hidden photographs.

I didn’t know who she was anymore.

My phone buzzed.

A message appeared.

Unknown number.

*STOP ASKING QUESTIONS ABOUT YOUR FATHER.*

My blood ran cold.

Mark saw my face.

“What happened?””

I showed him the message.

His expression changed instantly.

“That number.””

“What?””

“That number belonged to someone who worked at the clinic.””

“Who?””

Mark didn’t answer.

I stepped closer.

“Who?””

He whispered:

“Your father’s assistant.””

I frowned.

“She died two years ago.””

Mark looked at me.

“No.””

The room went quiet.

“She didn’t.””

My heart started racing.

“What are you saying?””

Mark looked toward the door.

“I’m saying someone wanted you to believe she was dead.””

The lights suddenly flickered.

Everyone looked up.

Then the power went out.

The house fell into darkness.

Emily screamed.

A sound came from the hallway.

A door opening.

Someone was inside.

I grabbed the flashlight from the counter.

“Stay here.””

Ryan moved beside me.

“I’m coming.””

For the first time in months, I didn’t trust him.

But I needed another person.

We walked toward the hallway.

The beam of light moved across the walls.

Nothing.

Then we saw it.

The back door.

Open.

Cold air entered the house.

And on the floor beside the door was a small envelope.

My name was written on it.

Again.

I picked it up.

Inside was one photograph.

A woman standing outside the fertility clinic.

Holding a baby.

A baby with pale skin.

A baby I recognized.

Noah.

But the woman holding him wasn’t Emily.

It was someone else.

Someone I had never met.

May you like

On the back of the photo were five words:

*YOUR WIFE WASN’T THE FIRST.*
