Chapter 9: The Last Recording

The flash drive sat beside my laptop for ten minutes before I opened it.

Nobody spoke.

Everyone waited.

Emily sat on the couch holding Noah.

Sarah stood near the window.

Mark remained silent.

Ryan looked like a man waiting for a sentence.

I plugged it in.

One video file appeared.

The name was simple.

*James.*

My hands went cold.

I pressed play.

My father appeared on the screen.

Older.

Tired.

But alive.

For a moment, I forgot everything.

I forgot the lies.

The secrets.

The betrayal.

I just saw my father.

“James,” he said.

My throat tightened.

“If you are watching this, I’m sorry.””

I looked away.

Because hearing his voice hurt.

“I should have told you the truth sooner.””

The video continued.

“I discovered the clinic was changing records. But the person behind it wasn’t a stranger.””

My father looked directly into the camera.

“It was someone I trusted.””

The screen flickered.

Then he said:

“Linda.””

Everyone froze.

My mother.

I stopped breathing.

My father continued.

“Your mother helped me uncover the truth. But she became afraid.””

I looked at my phone.

My mother.

“No.””

Mark looked shocked.

“That’s not possible.””

The video continued.

“Linda thought hiding the truth would protect James.””

My heart sank.

Because that sounded exactly like everyone else.

Everyone had used the same excuse.

Protection.

“I found out she made a deal.””

The room became silent.

“A deal with the clinic.””

I stood.

“What?””

My father continued.

“She gave them access to certain records in exchange for keeping James safe.””

Emily covered her mouth.

Ryan whispered:

“Your mother?””

The video stopped.

Then restarted.

My father’s final words appeared.

“But she didn’t know they would use the information to hurt innocent families.””

I sat down.

Everything changed.

My mother wasn’t the villain.

But she wasn’t innocent either.

She had made a choice.

A terrible one.

The video ended.

Nobody spoke.

Then my phone rang.

My mother.

I answered.

“Mom.””

Her voice cracked.

“James.””

“Did you know?””

Silence.

That was all I needed.

“You knew.””

“I was trying to fix it.””

“No.””

My voice shook.

“You were trying to hide it.””

She cried.

“I was scared.””

I closed my eyes.

“Everyone was scared.””

A pause.

Then she said:

“James, listen to me. There’s something else.””

“What?””

“The person who threatened you.””

I looked around.

“Who?””

My mother whispered:

“It wasn’t Mark.””

My eyes moved to him.

“Then who?””

Her answer came softly.

“The person closest to you.””

The call ended.

I looked at everyone.

Emily.

Ryan.

Sarah.

Mark.

Nobody looked away.

Then Noah started crying.

Emily stood immediately.

The instinctive movement broke something inside me.

Because whatever happened between us…

She loved that child.

And that mattered.

Ryan stepped forward.

“I need to tell you something.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

He swallowed.

“I wasn’t the one who sent the messages.””

I said nothing.

“I know who did.””

My heart started racing.

“Who?””

Ryan looked at Emily.

And she turned pale.

“No.””

I stared.

“What?””

Ryan whispered:

“She knows.””

Emily shook her head.

“Ryan, stop.””

“You need to tell him.””

I looked at my wife.

“What do you know?””

Tears filled her eyes.

“I was going to tell you.””

“Tell me what?””

She looked at Noah.

Then at me.

“The reason the clinic chose us…”

My voice dropped.

“Why?””

She whispered:

“Because Noah was never supposed to be mine.””

I waited.

“And he was never supposed to be yours.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“Then whose child is he?””

Emily looked toward the door.

A shadow appeared outside.

Someone was standing there.

Someone listening.

May you like

Then Emily whispered:

“Your father’s.””
