Chapter 7: The Woman In The Photograph
I kept staring at the photograph until the edges blurred.
The woman’s face was unfamiliar.
But the baby wasn’t.
Noah.
Same pale skin.
Same silver hair.
Same tiny fingers wrapped around the woman’s hand.
Except the photo was dated six months before Emily gave birth.
My mind couldn’t process it.
“James?””
Emily’s voice came from behind me.
I turned.
She looked terrified.
I held up the photo.
“Who is she?””
Emily looked at it.
And immediately stepped backward.
That reaction told me everything.
“You know her.””
“No.””
“You do.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I’ve seen her before.””
The room went silent.
“Where?””
Emily looked down.
“At the clinic.””
My stomach tightened.
“You went there?””
She nodded slowly.
“After you left.””
“Why?””
“Because I wanted answers.””
I stared.
“Answers about what?””
She looked at Noah.
“About why we couldn’t have children.””
The anger inside me softened for one second.
Because that was the one pain we shared.
Years of disappointment.
Years of hoping.
Years of doctors telling us maybe it wasn’t meant to happen.
But then she continued.
“And that’s when I met her.””
“The woman in the photo?””
Emily nodded.
“Her name was Sarah.””
Mark looked shocked.
“Sarah Bennett?””
Emily looked at him.
“You know her?””
Mark went pale.
“Yes.””
The room became tense again.
“Who is she?””
Mark sat down slowly.
“She was your father’s assistant.””
My mother’s words echoed.
The assistant who supposedly died.
I looked at the photograph.
“She had a baby?””
Mark nodded.
“She was part of the same clinic investigation.””
“Explain.””
Mark rubbed his face.
“Your father discovered that several embryos and fertility records had been manipulated.””
My eyes moved to Noah.
“Manipulated how?””
“Families were told they couldn’t have children. Records were changed. Some successful pregnancies were hidden.””
Emily whispered:
“Why?””
Mark looked at her.
“Money.””
Nobody spoke.
He continued.
“The clinic was selling private genetic information. They created situations where people would pay for treatments they didn’t need.””
I felt sick.
“And Noah?””
Mark looked at the baby.
“Noah may have been one of the children affected.””
Emily hugged him tighter.
I looked at her.
“Did Sarah know?””
“Yes.””
“Then why is she in the picture?””
Mark took the photograph.
He examined it.
“Because she was trying to expose them.””
A noise came from outside.
Everyone froze.
Ryan moved toward the window.
“There’s a car.””
I looked.
A black SUV was parked across the street.
The engine was running.
“Who is that?””
Mark’s face changed.
“We need to leave.””
I looked at him.
“Why?””
“Because they know we found the evidence.””
The SUV door opened.
A person stepped out.
A woman.
She walked toward the house.
My heart stopped.
Because even from a distance, I recognized her.
Not because I knew her.
Because I had seen her before.
In my father’s old photographs.
The woman everyone said was dead.
Sarah Bennett.
Emily whispered:
“That’s impossible.””
The front door handle moved.
Nobody spoke.
The door opened slowly.
Sarah stood there.
Older than the photo.
Tired.
Terrified.
She looked directly at me.
Then at Noah.
And tears filled her eyes.
“Oh my God.””
I stepped forward.
“Who are you?””
She ignored me.
She stared at Emily.
“You finally told him.””
Emily froze.
Sarah’s voice shook.
“After all these years, you finally told James the truth.””
I looked between them.
“What truth?””
Sarah looked at Noah.
Then whispered:
“That baby isn’t the secret.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
May you like
She looked at me.
“The secret is who his mother really is.””
