Chapter 3: The Friend Who Came Back

I didn’t remember moving.

One second I was standing near the doorway.

The next, Ryan was against the wall.

My hand was gripping his jacket.

“Say that again.””

His face changed.

Not fear.

Regret.

“James, listen.””

“Say it.””

Emily screamed.

“James!””

I let go.

Ryan fixed his jacket.

“You deserve the truth.””

I looked at Emily.

“The truth?””

My voice was shaking.

“I’ve been asking for the truth.””

Ryan looked at the baby.

Then back at me.

“His name is Noah.””

I hated that he knew the baby’s name.

I hated that he looked at him like he cared.

“How long?””

Ryan swallowed.

“I don’t know how to explain.””

“That’s everyone’s favorite sentence today.””

Emily stepped between us.

“James, Ryan came back because he wanted to help.””

“Help?””

I stared at her.

“He came back to help?””

I pointed at Noah.

“Is this help?””

Ryan looked away.

“I made mistakes.””

I laughed quietly.

“You made mistakes?””

The anger inside me was so heavy it felt like another person living in my body.

“You were my closest friend.””

Ryan nodded.

“I know.””

“You were the person I trusted most.””

“I know.””

“You knew I was leaving.””

Silence.

That silence told me everything.

I looked at Emily.

“Did he know before I left?””

Emily began crying.

“James…”

“Did he?””

Ryan answered.

“Yes.””

The room went completely still.

I felt something inside me break.

Because betrayal from a stranger hurts.

But betrayal from someone you love?

It changes how you see every memory.

Every joke.

Every conversation.

Every moment.

I looked at Emily.

“Was any of it real?””

Her face collapsed.

“Of course it was.””

“Then why?””

She wiped her tears.

“Because I was lonely.””

The words were quiet.

But they cut deeper than shouting.

“I was alone every day,” she continued.

“You were gone. I was scared. I didn’t know if you were coming home.””

I stared at her.

“I always told you I was coming home.””

“I know.””

“Then why?””

She looked at Noah.

“Because he was there.””

Ryan closed his eyes.

“I should have walked away.””

“Yes.””

“I know.””

“You should have.””

Ryan nodded.

“I’m sorry.””

Sorry.

That word meant nothing.

Not anymore.

I walked into the living room.

The walls were covered with photographs.

Our wedding.

Our first apartment.

Our trip to the coast.

A thousand memories.

A thousand things that suddenly felt fake.

Then I noticed something.

A photo frame turned facedown on the shelf.

I picked it up.

It was a picture of Emily and me.

But behind it was another photo.

A hospital photo.

Emily holding Noah.

Ryan standing beside her.

The three of them.

Like a family.

My hands started shaking.

“You had this here?””

Emily stepped forward.

“James…”

“You had this in our house?””

“I was going to remove it.””

“When?””

She had no answer.

Ryan looked ashamed.

“I asked her not to keep it.””

I turned toward him.

“You asked her?””

He nodded.

“Because I knew it was wrong.””

I looked at him.

“Then why did you do it?””

He didn’t answer.

The security monitor suddenly made a sound.

A notification.

Everyone looked toward it.

A new recording had appeared.

From earlier that day.

The plumber.

Mark.

I frowned.

“Why is he on the footage?””

Nobody answered.

I played the video.

The kitchen appeared.

Mark was standing near the security camera.

Looking directly into it.

Like he knew I would watch.

Then he walked closer.

And said something that made Emily cover her mouth.

“I found the old evidence behind the wall.””

The video continued.

Mark held up a small envelope.

“This belongs to James.””

My heart stopped.

“What evidence?””

Emily whispered:

“James…”

I looked at her.

“What did he find?””

She didn’t answer.

The screen showed Mark placing the envelope on the counter.

Then he smiled.

May you like

And said:

“You’re going to want to know why your wife really kept this from you.””
