Chapter 5: The Truth My Father Buried

I didn’t sleep that night.

Nobody did.

The house that used to feel like home became a courtroom.

Every person had a story.

Every story had a missing piece.

And somehow, I was the only person who didn’t know the full truth.

Mark sat at the kitchen table.

His toolbox remained by the door.

The plumber act was gone.

He looked older now.

Tired.

“Start talking.””

My voice was empty.

Mark nodded.

“I knew your father for twenty years.””

“My father was an accountant.””

Mark gave a sad smile.

“Your father told people many things about himself.””

I stared.

“What does that mean?””

He opened the file.

“Your father helped run a private medical foundation.””

I frowned.

“I never heard of that.””

“Because he kept it hidden.””

Emily sat quietly.

Ryan stood near the window.

Nobody interrupted.

Mark continued.

“Your father discovered a mistake at the fertility clinic where you and Emily went.””

I looked at the documents.

“The clinic mixed up records.””

Mark nodded.

“Yes.””

My hands tightened.

“So Noah…”

“He may be your biological son.””

The words felt unreal.

I looked at Emily.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

She looked destroyed.

“Because when I found out, I was already scared.””

“Scared of me?””

“No.””

She shook her head.

“Scared of losing Noah.””

That was the first honest answer she had given me.

And somehow, it hurt the most.

Mark continued.

“Your father was trying to fix the mistake before he died.””

“Why?””

“Because he knew innocent people were being hurt.””

I looked at Ryan.

“You mean innocent people like me?””

Ryan nodded.

“Yes.””

The room went quiet.

Then Ryan spoke.

“I need to tell you something too.””

I looked at him.

“Of course you do.””

He took a deep breath.

“The night before your deployment…”

I froze.

“What?””

Ryan looked ashamed.

“Your father called me.””

“Why?””

“He knew Emily was struggling.””

My eyes moved to Emily.

“What did he know?””

Emily started crying.

“James…”

“No. Let him speak.””

Ryan swallowed.

“Your father knew you and Emily were having problems.””

I felt my chest tighten.

“We weren’t.””

Ryan looked at the floor.

“You thought you weren’t.””

The sentence hit me.

Because maybe I had been away so long that I stopped seeing what was happening at home.

But that didn’t excuse betrayal.

Nothing did.

Mark opened another document.

“This is the last thing your father left.””

I took the paper.

It was a letter.

My father’s handwriting.

My hands shook as I read.

James,

If you are reading this, then the truth finally reached you.

I’m sorry I wasn’t brave enough to tell you myself.

Your wife made mistakes. Your friend made mistakes. But there is something you need to know.

The baby is not the only thing that was hidden from you.

I stopped.

My heartbeat increased.

I continued.

Before I died, I discovered someone at the clinic intentionally changed records.

Someone wanted Noah’s identity erased.

And that person is still close to your family.

I lowered the paper.

“What?””

Emily looked confused.

Ryan looked nervous.

Mark leaned forward.

“There’s more.””

I turned the page.

At the bottom was a name.

A name I knew.

A name that made my blood run cold.

Because the person my father suspected…

Was standing in my house the entire time.

I looked slowly toward my mother’s old photograph on the wall.

Then at Emily.

Then at Ryan.

And I whispered:

“Who else knew about Noah?””

Nobody answered.

Then my phone rang.

The caller ID appeared.

My mother.

I answered.

A voice I hadn’t heard in weeks whispered:

“James… don’t trust Mark.””

I looked at the plumber.

My grip tightened around the phone.

May you like

Then my mother said the words that changed everything:

“Your father didn’t die naturally.””
