Chapter 10: The Daughter Hidden in the Shadows

The accusation hung in the room like smoke.

“Your father took her.””

My mother’s words.

My father’s silence.

That was all I needed to see.

For years, I had imagined the worst thing Daniel had done was leave.

I thought the greatest betrayal was watching him choose another woman over us.

I thought the pain came from being abandoned.

But now I was standing in my own home, looking at the man who raised me, wondering if he had stolen an entire life from my mother.

From my sister.

From me.

Daniel shook his head.

“No.””

His voice was weak.

“No, Elena. Don’t do this.””

My mother stared at him.

“Don’t do what?””

“Destroy everything because you’re angry.””

I felt something inside me break.

Because even now, even after everything, he was still trying to make himself the victim.

Mom stepped closer.

“I spent sixteen years carrying the pain of losing my daughter.””

Her voice trembled.

“And you stood there knowing she might be alive.””

Daniel looked away.

I turned toward him.

“Is it true?””

He didn’t answer.

“Dad.””

The word came out automatically.

I hated that it still did.

“Is Lily alive?””

His eyes met mine.

And for a second, I saw the man I remembered.

The father who carried me on his shoulders.

The father who promised he would always protect me.

Then that memory disappeared.

“I didn’t know what else to do.””

My stomach dropped.

That wasn’t a denial.

“What does that mean?””

Daniel sat down.

His hands shook.

“I need to explain.””

My mother laughed bitterly.

“Sixteen years too late.””

He looked at her.

“You don’t know everything.””

“Then tell us.””

Nobody spoke.

Daniel took a deep breath.

“After Lily was born, the doctors discovered something.””

My mother’s expression changed.

“She was sick.””

I looked at Mom.

She nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

Daniel continued.

“There were complications. She needed expensive treatment.””

“And?”” I asked.

He swallowed.

“And the hospital bills were overwhelming.””

My mother stared.

“That’s your excuse?””

“No.””

He shook his head.

“That’s not what happened.””

He looked at me.

“I was scared.””

I crossed my arms.

“So you took her?””

His eyes filled with shame.

“No.””

The answer came quickly.

Too quickly.

“I didn’t take her.””

Mom whispered:

“Then where did she go?””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“I made a deal.””

The room went silent.

“What kind of deal?”” I asked.

He looked at the floor.

“A lawyer connected me with a private medical foundation.””

Marcus suddenly stepped forward.

“Which one?””

Daniel looked at him.

“You know.””

Marcus’s face hardened.

“Tell her.””

Daniel sighed.

“Rachel’s family foundation.””

Everything stopped.

Claire.

Rachel.

My father.

All connected.

Again.

My mother’s face turned pale.

“You gave my daughter to Rachel?””

“No!””

Daniel stood.

“I didn’t give her away.””

“Then what did you do?””

“I signed temporary guardianship papers.””

My mother stared at him.

“You signed away our child.””

“I thought it would save her life.””

“And then?””

Daniel looked broken.

“Then Rachel disappeared.””

The room went quiet.

I looked at Marcus.

“You knew?””

He nodded.

“I suspected.””

My anger rose.

“You suspected?””

He looked at me.

“I spent years trying to find out the truth.””

“But you didn’t tell us.””

“I didn’t have proof.””

I turned away.

Nobody had proof.

Nobody had answers.

But everyone had secrets.

My mother sat down.

“So Rachel took Lily.””

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

He looked at the floor.

“Because she wanted something.””

“What?””

He hesitated.

Then said:

“You.””

I froze.

“Me?””

Daniel nodded.

“Rachel believed Elena would choose Lily over you.””

My mother’s face changed.

“No.””

“She thought if Elena lost everything connected to Lily, she could control her.””

I felt sick.

Rachel wasn’t just after money.

She was after my mother’s heart.

“She knew about the inheritance,” Marcus added.

I looked at him.

“How?””

“Because Rachel discovered the trust before anyone else.””

My mother whispered:

“She was planning everything.””

Daniel nodded.

“Claire was part of it.””

The pieces finally began connecting.

Claire didn’t just appear.

Rachel didn’t just betray my mother.

My father wasn’t just unlucky.

He was surrounded by people who knew exactly how to manipulate him.

Then my phone rang.

Again.

Unknown number.

Everyone froze.

I answered.

“Hello?””

A girl’s voice spoke.

Young.

Shaking.

“Is this Emily?””

My heart stopped.

“Yes.””

A pause.

Then:

“My name is Lily.””

I couldn’t breathe.

Nobody moved.

The girl continued.

“I don’t know if I’m calling the right person.””

My hands started shaking.

“How do you know me?””

Silence.

Then she said:

“Because I’ve been looking for my sister.””

I looked at my mother.

She was crying.

Not silently.

Not trying to hide it.

Just crying.

“Where are you?””

The girl hesitated.

“I don’t know if I should tell you.””

“Why?””

Her voice became quieter.

“Because the person who raised me told me my whole life that my mother abandoned me.””

My mother covered her mouth.

“No…”

The girl continued:

“She told me Elena chose another child over me.””

I felt tears forming.

“Who raised you?””

A pause.

Then Lily said:

“Rachel.””

The room went silent.

And then Lily whispered:

“But I found something she never wanted me to see.””

“What?””

Her voice cracked.

“A video.””

My heart pounded.

May you like

“What video?””

“The night she took me.””
