Chapter 5: The Daughter Nobody Knew About

The photograph stayed on the table.

Nobody touched it.

Nobody breathed.

I looked at the image again.

My mother.

Young.

Terrified.

Holding a baby wrapped in a white blanket.

A baby who wasn’t me.

My fingers went cold.

“Mom?””

She didn’t answer.

I looked at my father.

His face had lost all color.

That was the moment I realized something.

He knew.

He knew before I did.

My voice became quieter.

“Dad…”

He looked at me.

“What is that?””

He opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

And somehow, that hurt more than any answer.

Claire smiled.

“There it is.””

She looked around the room.

“The truth finally comes out.””

My mother grabbed the photograph.

“Where did you get this?””

Claire didn’t move.

“You remember the old house?””

My mother’s expression changed.

“Yes.””

“The locked room upstairs?””

My heart skipped.

The old house.

The house we were thrown out of.

The house I thought I knew everything about.

My mother stared at Claire.

“You went there?””

Claire smiled.

“I went looking for something valuable.””

She glanced at the photo.

“I found something much better.””

I looked at my mother.

“What is she talking about?””

Mom sat down slowly.

For the first time, I saw the woman who raised me look defeated.

Not by Claire.

By the past.

“Emily…”

I shook my head.

“No.””

My voice trembled.

“I need you to tell me the truth.””

My father stepped forward.

“Emily, listen—”

I turned sharply.

“Why do you keep trying to speak for everyone?””

He stopped.

Because he knew.

He had lost that right.

Mom took a deep breath.

“When you were born, I thought my life was complete.””

She looked at me.

“You were my miracle.””

I swallowed.

“Then why is there another child?””

The silence that followed felt endless.

Mom looked down.

“Because before you were born…”

She paused.

“I had a daughter.””

The words broke something inside me.

A daughter.

My sister.

I stared.

“What happened?””

My mother’s eyes filled with tears.

“She died.””

The room went silent.

I felt the anger inside me collapse into confusion.

“How?””

Mom touched the photograph.

“She was born sick.””

Her voice became smaller.

“She lived for nine months.””

I sat down.

Nine months.

A whole life that existed before mine.

A child my mother loved.

A child I never knew existed.

“I don’t understand.””

Mom looked at me.

“I was afraid.””

“Afraid of what?””

“That if I talked about her, I would never stop grieving.””

She wiped her eyes.

“Then you were born.””

A sad smile appeared.

“And I thought I finally had a chance to be happy again.””

I looked at the photograph.

“So why did you hide her?””

My mother hesitated.

That hesitation hurt.

“Because Daniel asked me to.””

Everyone turned toward my father.

His face changed.

“Don’t.””

Mom looked at him.

“No.””

Her voice was calm.

“You don’t get to hide anymore.””

I stared at my father.

“What did he have to do with this?””

My father looked away.

Mom continued.

“After our daughter died, I fell apart.””

She took a breath.

“I wasn’t myself anymore.””

My father whispered:

“Elena…”

But she kept going.

“One night, Daniel told me something.””

She looked at him.

“He said if I couldn’t move forward, he would leave.””

My heart tightened.

“He threatened to leave you?””

Mom nodded.

“He said I needed to forget the past.””

I looked at my father.

“And you wonder why she stopped trusting you?””

He looked ashamed.

Claire interrupted.

“Beautiful story.””

Everyone looked at her.

She shrugged.

“But incomplete.””

My mother’s expression hardened.

“What else do you think you know?””

Claire leaned forward.

“The baby in the picture wasn’t just your daughter.””

My blood froze.

“What?””

Claire looked at me.

“She was connected to me.””

Nobody moved.

My father whispered:

“No.””

Claire smiled.

“Yes.””

I looked between them.

“What does that mean?””

Claire reached into her purse and pulled out a document.

She placed it beside the photograph.

“This is a birth record.””

My mother stood.

“Don’t.””

Claire ignored her.

“Your mother had a daughter.””

She looked at me.

“But that daughter wasn’t Daniel’s.””

The world seemed to stop.

I stared at the paper.

“No.””

My mother immediately stepped toward me.

“Emily, listen to me.””

I backed away.

“No.””

My voice broke.

“Is she saying Dad wasn’t my father?””

Nobody answered.

And that silence destroyed me.

My father looked devastated.

My mother looked terrified.

Claire looked victorious.

Then my father finally spoke.

“Emily…”

I looked at him.

“Tell me she’s lying.””

His lips parted.

But before he could answer, my mother grabbed the document and tore it in half.

Everyone froze.

“I spent sixteen years protecting you from this.””

She looked at me.

“Not because I was ashamed.””

Tears rolled down her face.

“Because I was afraid you would hate me.””

I whispered:

“Why?””

My mother walked toward me.

“Because the truth is…”

She stopped.

And then the front door opened again.

A man stood outside.

Older.

Carrying a briefcase.

My mother’s face went pale.

Because she recognized him.

Claire smiled.

“Perfect timing.””

The man looked at me.

Then at my mother.

And said:

“Emily, I’m sorry you had to find out this way.””

My mother whispered his name.

“Marcus…”

May you like

He stepped inside.

“I’m your biological father.””
