Chapter 3: The Truth Behind the Locked Door

I stared at the message until the screen went dark.

The words remained burned into my mind.

Ask your mother what happened the night she left the old house.

I looked at Mom.

For the first time in my entire life, she looked uncertain.

Not scared.

My mother was rarely afraid.

But uncertain.

And that scared me more.

“Mom?””

She didn’t answer immediately.

My father looked between us.

“What message?””

I turned the phone toward him.

The moment he read it, his face changed.

“You shouldn’t listen to whoever sent that.””

I looked at him.

“You know who it is.””

Silence.

That was his answer.

Mom slowly walked toward the kitchen.

“Emily, there are things I should have told you.””

I followed her.

“Like what?””

She placed both hands on the counter.

For years, I had seen my mother as unbreakable.

But now she looked tired.

Like someone who had carried a secret too heavy for too long.

“The night your father threw us out wasn’t the first time he betrayed us.””

I felt my stomach tighten.

“What does that mean?””

She looked toward the living room.

Daniel was sitting there, staring at the floor.

“He didn’t just leave us.””

She paused.

“He tried to make sure we had nothing.””

My father stood.

“Elena, stop.””

Mom turned sharply.

“No.””

Her voice was calm.

But powerful.

“She deserves to know.””

I looked at my father.

“What did you do?””

He didn’t respond.

Mom continued.

“After Daniel decided to leave, he secretly moved money out of our accounts.””

My heart sank.

“What?””

“He thought I wouldn’t notice.””

My father looked ashamed.

“I was angry.””

Mom laughed quietly.

“Anger doesn’t explain everything.””

She opened a cabinet and pulled out another folder.

“I found out three days before we left.””

I stared.

“Then why didn’t you fight?””

Her expression softened.

“Because I realized something.””

She looked at me.

“If I stayed and fought him, you would have watched your parents destroy each other.””

She shook her head.

“I wanted to save you from becoming part of that war.””

I looked down.

All those years, I thought my mother had simply accepted losing.

I was wrong.

She had chosen peace over revenge.

My father stepped closer.

“I never wanted you to suffer.””

I looked at him.

“But you watched us suffer.””

He had no answer.

The truth was painful because it was simple.

He had choices.

Every single day.

And he chose wrong.

My mother placed the folder on the table.

“There’s one more thing.””

I opened it.

Inside was a photograph.

An old photograph.

My father.

Claire.

And another man I didn’t recognize.

“What is this?””

Mom looked at Daniel.

“Tell her.””

My father stayed silent.

“Dad.””

His shoulders dropped.

“That was Claire’s brother.””

“And?””

“He helped her convince me to leave.””

I waited.

My father swallowed.

“They knew about the company. They knew about the money. They knew exactly how much I had.””

The room became colder.

“So they planned everything?””

He nodded.

“Yes.””

I looked at him.

“And you never wondered why someone twenty years younger suddenly loved everything about you?””

His eyes filled with shame.

“I was selfish.””

That was the first honest thing he had said.

Mom sat down.

“You thought Claire chose you because you were special.””

She looked at him.

“But she chose you because you were useful.””

My father covered his face.

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then there was another knock.

Everyone froze.

I looked toward the front door.

The security system showed someone standing outside.

A woman.

Blonde hair.

Expensive coat.

A familiar face.

Claire.

My father stood immediately.

“No.””

His voice was barely a whisper.

“She can’t be here.””

Mom looked at him.

“Why?””

He stared at the screen.

Because he knew something we didn’t.

Claire wasn’t supposed to be coming back.

Not unless she had a reason.

The doorbell rang again.

Then Claire’s voice came through the speaker.

“Daniel.””

My father went pale.

“Open the door.””

Nobody moved.

Then she said something that changed everything.

“I know Elena has the documents.””

My mother’s eyes narrowed.

Claire smiled through the camera.

“And I know exactly what she’s been hiding from Emily.””

I felt my heart stop.

Mom looked at me.

Claire continued:

“Because the truth is…”

She paused.

“The night your mother left that house, she didn’t leave with nothing.””

My father took a step back.

And my mother whispered:

“Don’t listen to her.””

But it was too late.

Because Claire said the final words through the speaker.

“She left with something that belonged to me.””

May you like

And for the first time in sixteen years…

I wondered if my mother had been hiding a secret of her own.
