Chapter 6: The Man Who Came Too Late

Nobody spoke.

Not even Claire.

For a moment, I thought I had stopped hearing correctly.

My biological father.

Those words didn’t make sense.

They couldn’t.

Because the man standing in front of me wasn’t Daniel.

He was a stranger.

A stranger claiming ownership of the most painful question of my life.

I looked at my mother.

She looked broken.

Not angry.

Not surprised.

Broken.

“Mom?””

She closed her eyes.

“Emily…”

I shook my head.

“No.””

My voice was barely a whisper.

“No more secrets.””

Marcus stepped forward.

“I know this is overwhelming.””

I laughed.

Overwhelming.

That was one way to describe it.

My entire life had just been rewritten in one night.

My father wasn’t my father.

My mother had hidden a child before me.

Claire knew secrets that could destroy all of us.

And somehow, everyone expected me to stand there calmly.

I looked at Marcus.

“Why are you here?””

He looked at my mother.

“Elena never wanted you to know.””

I turned.

“You knew?””

He nodded.

“I knew.””

The answer hurt.

Another person.

Another secret.

Another adult who decided I wasn’t strong enough to handle the truth.

I stepped back.

“Everyone knew except me.””

My mother reached for my hand.

I pulled away.

That hurt her.

I saw it.

But I couldn’t stop.

“I spent my whole life wondering why Dad changed.””

I looked at Daniel.

“Why he stopped loving us.””

Then I looked at Marcus.

“Now I find out I wasn’t even his daughter?””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Emily, you are my daughter.””

I looked at him.

“Am I?””

His eyes filled with tears.

“Yes.””

“Then why did you leave?””

He had no answer.

Because biology wasn’t the only thing that mattered.

Love was a choice.

And he chose not to make it.

Marcus looked at Daniel.

“You should have told her years ago.””

Daniel stared at him.

“You don’t get to judge me.””

Marcus laughed bitterly.

“No?””

He stepped closer.

“I spent sixteen years watching the woman I loved lose everything because of your choices.””

My eyes widened.

“The woman you loved?””

My mother looked away.

And suddenly there was another layer.

Another wound.

Marcus noticed my confusion.

“I was Elena’s friend before Daniel.””

My father’s expression darkened.

“Don’t.””

Marcus ignored him.

“We met before your parents married.””

I looked at Mom.

“Did you love him?””

The question came out quietly.

She didn’t answer.

And somehow that hurt.

Not because I was angry.

Because I realized my mother had lived an entire life before me.

A life filled with pain I never knew.

Marcus opened his briefcase.

“I didn’t come here to destroy your family.””

He placed a folder on the table.

“I came because Claire is about to do something worse.””

Everyone looked at him.

Claire crossed her arms.

“Oh really?””

Marcus looked at her.

“You thought nobody would find out?””

For the first time, Claire looked nervous.

“What are you talking about?””

He opened the folder.

“Your entire plan.””

My father stared.

“What plan?””

Marcus looked at Daniel.

“The reason she married you.””

Claire’s face hardened.

“Careful.””

Marcus smiled.

“Why? Afraid the truth will hurt?””

He placed documents on the table.

“She didn’t just want your money.””

My father looked down.

“She wanted access.””

“To what?””

Marcus looked at me.

“To Elena’s company.””

My mother frowned.

“That doesn’t make sense.””

Marcus shook his head.

“It does when you understand the bigger picture.””

He turned to me.

“Your mother’s company has something Claire has been searching for for years.””

I looked at Mom.

“What?””

She looked confused.

“I don’t know what he’s talking about.””

Marcus reached into the folder.

Then he pulled out an old letter.

My mother saw it.

And immediately stood.

“Where did you get that?””

Marcus looked at her.

“From the same place Claire got the photograph.””

My father stared.

“What is it?””

Marcus handed it to me.

My hands shook as I opened it.

The handwriting was old.

The ink had faded.

But the first sentence made my heart stop.

“Dear Elena, if you are reading this, then they have found out about the inheritance.””

I looked up.

“Inheritance?””

Mom’s face turned pale.

Marcus whispered:

“The secret your mother protected wasn’t just about your sister.””

He looked at Daniel.

“It was about what Elena inherited after her death.””

My father frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Marcus looked at Claire.

“She didn’t come back for your company.””

A cold silence filled the room.

“She came back because she knows Emily is the key to everything.””

Claire suddenly moved toward the door.

But security locked it automatically.

My mother stared at her.

“Why are you afraid?””

Claire said nothing.

And then my phone buzzed.

A new message.

From an unknown number.

One sentence.

I read it aloud.

“Your mother has been lying about who your real enemy is.””

I looked at the screen.

Then at Claire.

Then at my mother.

May you like

Because suddenly…

I wasn’t sure who I was supposed to trust.
