Chapter 12: The Enemy Inside the Family
Rachel didn’t knock.
She didn’t need to.
She stood outside my mansion like she belonged there.
Like she had been waiting sixteen years for this moment.
The security screen showed her face clearly.
Older.
More tired.
But the same cold confidence remained.
My mother stared at the monitor.
“Don’t let her in.””
Nobody argued.
Not even Daniel.
For the first time, all of us agreed on something.
Rachel was dangerous.
The front gate remained locked.
Rachel looked directly at the camera.
Then smiled.
“You know I can see you watching.””
I felt a chill.
Marcus checked the security controls.
“She must have followed Lily’s phone.””
My mother looked at him.
“Can you track her?””
He shook his head.
“Not from here.””
Rachel lifted her phone and held it toward the camera.
A message appeared on the security screen.
One sentence.
“Open the gate, or Lily disappears.””
My mother immediately moved.
“No.””
I grabbed her arm.
“Mom.””
She looked at me.
“That’s my daughter.””
The pain in her voice broke me.
For years, I thought I understood my mother’s sacrifices.
I didn’t.
A mother never stops searching for a missing piece of herself.
Not after one year.
Not after sixteen.
Daniel stepped forward.
“I’ll talk to her.””
Everyone looked at him.
My mother laughed coldly.
“Why?””
“Because this started with me.””
“That doesn’t mean you can fix it.””
He looked at her.
“I know.””
A pause.
“But I need to try.””
Before anyone could stop him, he opened the speaker.
“Rachel.””
Her smile appeared.
“Daniel.””
“You need to leave.””
She laughed.
“You always did love pretending you were in control.””
“What do you want?””
Rachel looked toward the camera.
“I want what Elena stole from me.””
My mother stepped closer.
“I stole nothing.””
Rachel’s expression changed.
“You stole everything.””
The anger in her voice surprised me.
Not because it was loud.
Because it sounded real.
“I spent my entire life watching people like you get everything.””
My mother replied:
“You mean people who worked for what they had?””
Rachel’s face hardened.
“You always thought you were better.””
“No.””
Mom’s voice became calm.
“I just refused to become cruel.””
Rachel smiled.
“Still the same Elena.””
She held up a folder.
“Do you know what this is?””
Nobody answered.
“A DNA report.””
My heart stopped.
She continued.
“It proves something.””
She looked at me.
“Emily isn’t the only child connected to the inheritance.””
Marcus frowned.
“What are you talking about?””
Rachel smiled.
“My daughter has rights too.””
The room went silent.
“Your daughter?””
Rachel nodded.
The blood drained from my mother’s face.
“No.””
Rachel’s smile widened.
“Yes.””
I looked at Marcus.
He looked confused.
Daniel looked terrified.
Then Rachel said:
“You never asked why I took Lily.””
My mother whispered:
“Because you wanted money.””
Rachel shook her head.
“No.””
She looked at the camera.
“Because Lily was my daughter too.””
Nobody moved.
The words didn’t make sense.
They couldn’t.
My sister.
Rachel’s daughter?
My mother looked like she couldn’t breathe.
“That’s impossible.””
Rachel smiled.
“You really believed Daniel was the only person who betrayed you?””
Daniel stepped back.
“What are you saying?””
Rachel looked at him.
“You never knew, did you?””
My father’s face changed.
“Rachel.””
She laughed.
“Tell them.””
Nobody spoke.
Rachel looked at my mother.
“The night Lily was born, Daniel wasn’t the only man in your life.””
My mother whispered:
“No.””
Rachel continued.
“And the truth about Lily’s birth…”
She paused.
“Will destroy everything you think you know.””
The call ended.
The mansion became silent.
Then my mother collapsed into the chair.
I rushed toward her.
“Mom.””
She looked at me.
Tears filled her eyes.
And she whispered:
“I was going to tell you.””
I froze.
“Tell me what?””
She looked toward Daniel.
Then toward the closed gate.
May you like
And finally back at me.
“The truth about who your sister’s father really was.””
