Chapter 7: The Inheritance Nobody Was Supposed to Find

The message stayed on my phone screen.

“Your mother has been lying about who your real enemy is.””

I read it three times.

Then four.

Each time, the words felt heavier.

Because I didn’t know what scared me more.

The possibility that my mother had lied…

Or the possibility that someone wanted me to believe she had.

The room felt smaller.

Everyone was watching everyone else.

My father looked at my mother like he was seeing her for the first time.

Claire stood near the locked door, unusually quiet.

Marcus waited beside the table, his expression unreadable.

And my mother…

My mother looked at me.

Not at the phone.

Not at the others.

At me.

“Emily.””

Her voice was soft.

The same voice that used to sing to me when I was sick.

The same voice that promised me everything would be okay.

But tonight, I didn’t know if I could believe it.

“How much don’t I know?””

She swallowed.

“That depends on what you mean.””

I almost laughed.

“What I mean?””

I held up the phone.

“I mean my entire life just changed in one night.””

I pointed toward Daniel.

“I found out my father isn’t my biological father.””

Then toward Marcus.

“I found out there was another man who knew about me.””

Then toward Claire.

“And now I’m finding out there’s some inheritance everyone knew about except me.””

My voice cracked.

“Do you understand how impossible that feels?””

My mother’s eyes filled with tears.

“Yes.””

“No, Mom.””

I shook my head.

“You don’t get to say yes.””

The words hurt her.

I saw it.

But I needed her to understand.

“I spent years believing we were abandoned because Dad stopped loving us.””

I looked at Daniel.

“I spent years hating him.””

Then I looked back at her.

“But now I’m standing here wondering if you were hiding something too.””

The silence was unbearable.

Finally, Marcus spoke.

“She deserves the full truth.””

My mother looked at him.

“I know.””

“Then tell her.””

Mom closed her eyes.

For a moment, she looked exhausted.

Not like the powerful businesswoman everyone feared.

Just like a mother who had run out of strength.

“Sixteen years ago, when Daniel left, I thought my life was over.””

She sat down.

“But I wasn’t completely powerless.””

She looked at the documents on the table.

“The company Daniel believed he built was protected because of a trust my father created before he died.””

I frowned.

“Your father?””

She nodded.

“My grandfather created a family trust. It was passed to my father, and after his death, it came to me.””

Marcus added:

“It wasn’t just money.””

My mother looked at him.

“It was ownership.””

She nodded.

“Control over several properties and investments.””

I stared.

“So you were wealthy before Dad?””

My mother looked uncomfortable.

“Yes.””

That answer surprised me.

“Then why did we live like we had nothing?””

She looked down.

“Because I chose not to use it.””

“Why?””

Her eyes met mine.

“Because I wanted a normal life.””

I didn’t expect that answer.

She continued.

“I grew up watching people treat money like it made them better than everyone else. I didn’t want that for us.””

She smiled sadly.

“I wanted you to know the value of hard work.””

I looked at Daniel.

“And Dad knew?””

My mother nodded.

“He knew some of it.””

Daniel suddenly spoke.

“Not all.””

Everyone looked at him.

He looked at the floor.

“I knew Elena had family assets.””

His voice became quieter.

“But I didn’t know how much.””

My mother stared at him.

“You never asked.””

“No.””

“Because you assumed everything would become yours eventually.””

Daniel looked ashamed.

I realized something.

The man who had left us for money had never actually understood what money meant.

He only understood having more of it.

Claire suddenly laughed.

Everyone turned.

“You’re all acting like Elena is some hero.””

My mother looked at her.

“Are you finished?””

“No.””

Claire stepped away from the door.

“You want Emily to believe I’m the villain because I wanted money?””

She pointed at Marcus.

“What about him?””

Marcus frowned.

“What about me?””

Claire smiled.

“Tell her why you really came.””

Marcus’s face changed.

Just slightly.

But I noticed.

And my mother noticed too.

“Marcus.””

Her voice was different.

A warning.

Claire smiled.

“There it is.””

I looked between them.

“What is she talking about?””

Nobody answered.

My patience broke.

“No.””

I stood.

“Not again.””

I looked at Marcus.

“You came here knowing everything.””

He didn’t deny it.

“I came because I wanted to protect you.””

“Protect me from what?””

His silence lasted too long.

“Marcus.””

My mother’s voice trembled.

He finally said:

“From the people who know about the inheritance.””

Claire smiled.

“Which includes me.””

I looked at her.

“How did you find out?””

She shrugged.

“Your mother made one mistake.””

“What mistake?””

“She trusted the wrong person.””

My mother’s face changed.

A memory.

A realization.

“No.””

She whispered.

Claire looked satisfied.

“Yes.””

I felt a chill.

“Who?””

Claire walked toward the table.

“You really want to know?””

Nobody spoke.

She looked at my mother.

“Your best friend.””

My mother froze.

I watched the color leave her face.

Because whoever Claire was talking about…

My mother knew exactly who it was.

And then Claire said the name.

A name I had never heard before.

But one that made my mother whisper:

“That’s impossible.””

Claire smiled.

“Nothing is impossible when someone is desperate enough.””

My father looked confused.

“Who is she talking about?””

My mother didn’t answer.

She just stared at the floor.

Then Marcus quietly said:

“Your mother’s closest friend from before you were born.””

I looked at him.

“Who?””

He took a breath.

“Rachel.””

My mother stood immediately.

“Rachel died years ago.””

Claire smiled.

“No, Elena.””

She reached into her bag.

“She didn’t.””

She placed another photograph on the table.

A woman standing beside Claire.

A woman who looked older.

But alive.

My mother touched the photograph.

May you like

Her hand began shaking.

Because the person in the picture wasn’t supposed to exist.
