Chapter 10: The Man Behind the Curtain

The room had never felt so small.

Not when Richard humiliated me.

Not when Margaret smiled while I cried.

Not even when I discovered my marriage was built on a lie.

Because all of those moments involved people I thought I understood.

This was different.

The old man standing in the doorway wasn’t just another Harrington.

He was the person who had been hiding behind every decision, every secret, every carefully planned move.

My grandfather.

A man I had never met.

A man my mother had spent decades running from.

A man my father had spent years trying to defeat.

He looked around the room like he owned the air itself.

“Robert Carter.””

My father stepped forward.

“You should be dead.””

The old man smiled.

“So should many people who crossed me.””

My stomach tightened.

His voice was calm.

Almost gentle.

That made it worse.

Dangerous people didn’t always scream.

Sometimes they whispered.

“Who are you?”” I asked.

His eyes moved toward me.

And for a moment, I hated how familiar that look felt.

Not because I had seen him before.

Because I had seen that same confidence in Richard.

The belief that the world belonged to him.

“I’m your grandfather.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

The word came out before I could stop it.

He smiled.

“Denial is a natural response.””

“I don’t know you.””

“No.””

He walked farther into the room.

“But I know you.””

I felt my father move closer.

A silent warning.

My grandfather noticed.

“Still protecting her.””

My father’s voice was cold.

“Stay away from my daughter.””

The old man laughed softly.

“After all these years, you still think you have control.””

Alexander looked at him.

“Father.””

The old man glanced at him.

And Alexander immediately stopped speaking.

That single moment told me everything.

The man who controlled the Harrington empire was afraid of his own father.

Richard noticed too.

His face changed.

“You knew he was alive?””

Alexander didn’t answer.

Richard looked at Margaret.

“You knew?””

Margaret’s eyes filled with shame.

“I was trying to protect you.””

Richard laughed.

“Protect me?””

His voice rose.

“You let me build my entire life around a lie.””

The old man ignored them.

His eyes stayed on me.

“You look like Elena.””

My chest tightened.

“Don’t say her name.””

He smiled.

“Still angry.””

“She was your daughter.””

The smile disappeared.

Only for a second.

Then it returned.

“Elena was emotional.””

My hands curled into fists.

“She was brave.””

“She was foolish.””

My father stepped forward.

“Careful.””

The old man looked at him.

“You always had a problem with authority, Robert.””

“And you always had a problem with the truth.””

The room went silent.

The old man walked toward the table.

“The truth is simple.””

He picked up the old photograph of my mother.

“Your mother betrayed her family.””

I stared at him.

“No.””

“She chose morality over loyalty.””

“That’s called having principles.””

He smiled.

“That’s what weak people call it.””

My stomach turned.

He truly believed this.

He believed kindness was weakness.

Love was weakness.

Loyalty only mattered when it benefited him.

“How did she survive?”” I asked.

Everyone looked at me.

The old man’s expression changed slightly.

“Because I allowed it.””

My father moved instantly.

“You threatened her.””

“No.””

He looked amused.

“I gave her a choice.””

“What choice?””

“She could disappear and live.””

My voice shook.

“Or?””

The old man looked at me.

“Or you would.””

The room went silent.

I felt like the air had left my lungs.

My father grabbed the edge of the table.

“You son of a—”

“No.””

I stopped him.

I needed to hear.

“What does that mean?””

The old man calmly explained.

“Elena discovered information that could destroy everything. She knew too much. But she had one weakness.””

He looked at me.

“You.””

I felt sick.

“She loved you.””

My eyes filled with tears.

“So you used me.””

“Yes.””

The honesty was terrifying.

No denial.

No excuses.

“You made my mother disappear because of me.””

“I made your mother choose.””

My voice broke.

“She was a mother.””

“And I was protecting my family.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You were protecting yourself.””

For the first time, the old man looked annoyed.

Only slightly.

But I saw it.

He was not used to being challenged.

My father noticed.

“Nia.””

“I’m fine.””

I wasn’t.

But I needed him to know.

“I spent my whole life thinking I lost my mother.””

I looked at the old man.

“But she lost me because of you.””

The room became quiet.

Then my grandfather said something I never expected.

“I regret that.””

Everyone froze.

Even Alexander.

I laughed bitterly.

“You regret it?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

He looked at the photograph.

“Because Elena was the only person who ever made me question myself.””

For one moment, he looked almost human.

Then it disappeared.

“But regret does not change reality.””

My father stepped forward.

“No.””

He looked directly at him.

“But consequences do.””

The old man smiled.

“You think you won because you exposed some documents?””

He shook his head.

“You still don’t understand.””

“What?””

“The Harrington empire was never built on money.””

He looked around the room.

“It was built on fear.””

Then his phone rang.

He answered.

“Yes?””

He listened.

And suddenly his expression changed.

Not fear.

Concern.

“What do you mean the file was copied?””

Everyone looked at him.

He turned away.

“Find her.””

A pause.

“No.””

His voice became colder.

“Find Nia’s mother.””

My heart stopped.

The call ended.

My grandfather looked at me.

And for the first time, I saw something I never expected.

Panic.

May you like

Because whatever was happening…

He wasn’t controlling it anymore.
