Chapter 5: The Enemy Who Knew My Name

The man standing inside the old Harrington estate looked like someone who had never heard the word “no.””

He wore a tailored suit, silver hair perfectly combed back, and the kind of calm expression that made every threat feel polite.

My father didn’t move.

Neither did Margaret.

That frightened me more than anything.

Because my father was not a man who froze.

Not for anyone.

“Who is he?”” I asked.

My father kept his eyes on the man.

“Alexander Harrington.””

The name meant nothing to me.

But the way everyone reacted told me everything.

Margaret looked down.

Almost like a child waiting to be punished.

Alexander smiled.

“Still protecting her, Robert?””

My father’s voice was cold.

“Stay away from my daughter.””

Alexander laughed quietly.

“You always did have a talent for dramatic entrances.””

“You sent that message.””

It wasn’t a question.

Alexander looked at me.

“I did.””

My hands tightened.

“Why?””

“Because you deserved to know the truth.””

I almost laughed.

“After everything your family did?””

He tilted his head.

“You think my family is the villain.””

“Are you saying they aren’t?””

Alexander looked toward Margaret.

“She’s a villain.””

Margaret’s face tightened.

“Alexander.””

“No.””

His voice sharpened.

“You spent years pretending you had no choice.””

The room became silent.

Then he looked back at me.

“Richard is arrogant. Margaret is cruel. But they are both small pieces on a much larger board.””

My father stepped forward.

“Enough games.””

Alexander ignored him.

“Nia, do you know why Richard chose you?””

I felt my chest tighten.

“Because he loved me.””

The words sounded strange even as I said them.

Alexander smiled sadly.

“No.””

Margaret closed her eyes.

Like she already knew what was coming.

“Richard married you because of your father.””

I looked at Robert.

He didn’t deny it.

My heart dropped.

“What does that mean?””

My father looked away.

And that hurt more than any answer.

“Dad?””

Alexander walked toward an old wooden table.

On it sat a stack of documents.

He picked one up.

“Your father destroyed the Harrington empire once.””

I stared at him.

“He what?””

“He exposed illegal financial operations that almost ended our family.””

My father’s voice interrupted.

“I exposed the truth.””

Alexander looked at him.

“Truth is a matter of perspective.””

“No.””

My father’s voice was firm.

“Truth is what happened.””

Alexander smiled.

“And that’s why I respected you.””

The sentence shocked me.

“You respected him?””

“Yes.””

Alexander placed the document down.

“Your father was the only man who ever stood against us.””

I looked between them.

“Then why did Richard marry me?””

Alexander’s expression changed.

“Because Richard believed your father had something.””

“What?””

“A weakness.””

The room became painfully quiet.

I felt sick.

“My father?””

Alexander nodded.

“You.””

I stepped back.

“No.””

My father immediately moved toward me.

“Nia.””

But I shook my head.

“No.””

I looked at him.

“Tell me this isn’t true.””

His silence answered before his words did.

“I never wanted you involved.””

“But I was.””

My voice cracked.

“I was the plan.””

My father looked devastated.

“You were never a plan.””

“But they thought I was.””

The worst part wasn’t learning Richard lied.

I had already accepted that.

The worst part was realizing powerful people had been watching my life from a distance.

Calculating.

Waiting.

Alexander picked up another file.

“There’s something else.””

I didn’t want to hear it.

But I couldn’t look away.

“This file was created before your marriage.””

He handed it to me.

My hands shook as I opened it.

Inside was a photograph.

Me.

At a charity event.

Three years before I met Richard.

On the back of the photograph were handwritten words.

*Potential leverage against Robert Carter.*

My stomach turned.

“He was watching me.””

Alexander nodded.

“Yes.””

“Why show me this?””

He looked directly at me.

“Because Richard is not your biggest threat anymore.””

A sound came from outside.

Footsteps.

Multiple footsteps.

My father immediately looked toward the entrance.

“Who did you bring?””

Alexander smiled.

“I didn’t bring anyone.””

The doors opened.

And Richard Harrington walked inside.

His face was bruised.

His confidence was gone.

Behind him stood several lawyers and security personnel.

Richard looked at me.

Then at my father.

“You really thought you could destroy us?””

My father stepped forward.

“No.””

Richard smiled.

“Then what are you doing?””

My father looked at him calmly.

“Making sure everyone sees who you really are.””

Richard laughed.

“You still don’t understand.””

He looked at Alexander.

“Tell them.””

Nobody moved.

Richard’s smile slowly disappeared.

“Tell them who actually owns everything.””

Alexander said nothing.

Richard’s eyes widened.

Because suddenly, he looked afraid.

Not of my father.

Of Alexander.

My father noticed.

And so did I.

Then Alexander spoke quietly.

“Richard.””

“Yes?””

“You were never the owner.””

Richard froze.

“You were always the son.””

A terrible silence filled the room.

Alexander looked at me.

“And your husband was never building an empire.””

May you like

He glanced toward Richard.

“He was protecting mine.””
