Chapter 6: The Name Hidden Behind the Empire

Richard Harrington had spent his entire life pretending he was powerful.

But standing inside that old estate, I watched something I never thought I would see.

My husband was afraid.

Not angry.

Not arrogant.

Afraid.

“Say it again,” Richard whispered.

Alexander didn’t blink.

“You heard me.””

Richard looked around the room.

“At all of you.””

Nobody met his eyes.

Margaret looked away.

The lawyers stared at the floor.

The security guards remained silent.

Everyone knew.

Everyone except me.

“You knew?”” I asked Margaret.

She didn’t answer.

“Margaret.””

Her lips parted.

“Nia…”

“No.””

My voice shook.

“You watched me marry him.””

Tears filled my eyes.

“You sat at my wedding.””

She lowered her head.

“I did what I had to do.””

The words felt like another betrayal.

“What you had to do?””

Margaret looked at me.

“You don’t understand what this family is.””

I laughed bitterly.

“You’re right.””

I looked around the room.

“I don’t understand how people can destroy someone’s life and call it business.””

Richard stepped forward.

“You should be careful.””

I turned toward him.

There he was.

The man who hurt me.

The man who thought I would always be quiet.

But something had changed.

I wasn’t standing in his mansion anymore.

I wasn’t surrounded by his family.

I wasn’t alone.

“Are you threatening me again?”” I asked.

His jaw tightened.

“I’m warning you.””

My father stepped between us.

“You don’t get to threaten her anymore.””

Richard looked at him.

“You think you won?””

My father smiled slightly.

“No.””

That confused him.

“Then what?””

“We’re just getting started.””

Alexander walked toward the table.

“You both misunderstand what happened.””

Everyone looked at him.

He picked up a folder.

“The Harrington family has survived because we control information.””

He looked at me.

“Not money.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

“It means money can disappear.””

He placed the folder down.

“But secrets are worth more.””

My father’s expression hardened.

“What are you planning?””

Alexander looked at him.

“Not me.””

A chill moved through the room.

“Then who?””

Alexander pointed toward Richard.

“Your husband.””

Richard shook his head.

“No.””

“You thought marrying Nia would force Robert to protect you.””

“That’s not true.””

“You thought if anything happened, he would reveal his resources to save his daughter.””

Richard’s face changed.

Because it was true.

I looked at him.

“You used me.””

His silence was enough.

The pain I felt wasn’t the same as before.

The slap hurt.

The humiliation hurt.

But this?

This was different.

This was realizing the person I trusted most had never seen me as a person.

Only as a doorway.

I walked toward him.

“Did you ever love me?””

For the first time, Richard looked away.

That was my answer.

My father placed a hand on my shoulder.

I didn’t cry.

I refused to give him that.

Alexander watched me carefully.

“You’re stronger than they expected.””

I looked at him.

“Why do you care?””

He didn’t answer immediately.

Then he said:

“Because I made the mistake of believing power was everything.””

The room went quiet.

“I lost people because of that mistake.””

My father looked surprised.

“You regret it?””

Alexander looked older suddenly.

“Yes.””

Before anyone could speak, one of the lawyers rushed into the room.

“Mr. Harrington.””

Alexander turned.

“What?””

The lawyer looked nervous.

“The investigation has expanded.””

Richard frowned.

“What investigation?””

The lawyer looked at him.

“The federal review.””

Richard’s face went pale.

“Impossible.””

The lawyer continued.

“They found additional records.””

Alexander’s eyes narrowed.

“What records?””

The lawyer hesitated.

Then handed him a tablet.

Alexander read the screen.

For the first time, even he looked surprised.

“What is it?”” Margaret asked.

Alexander didn’t answer.

He looked at my father.

Then at me.

“Nia…”

Something about his voice made my stomach drop.

“What?””

He turned the tablet around.

On the screen was an old photograph.

A photograph of my mother.

My father’s face changed completely.

Because beneath the image was a message.

*The Harrington investigation was never about money.*

A second line appeared.

*It was about what happened to Elena Carter.*

My breath stopped.

My mother’s name.

A secret from before I was born.

My father whispered:

“No…”

I looked at him.

“Dad?””

He didn’t answer.

Because everyone in the room was staring at him.

And I realized the truth.

The Harrington family had not spent years trying to control my father because of his business.

May you like

They were afraid of what he knew.

And what happened next would finally reveal why my mother disappeared from our lives.
