Chapter 3: When the Doors Opened
The Harrington family always believed they controlled every room they entered.
They were wrong.
They just had never met my father.
I woke up the next morning at my small apartment with twenty-three missed calls.
Most were from Richard.
I stared at his name on the screen.
A week earlier, I would have answered immediately.
I would have apologized.
I would have tried to fix something I didn’t break.
But after last night, I finally understood something.
Silence was sometimes more powerful than screaming.
My phone rang again.
This time, it wasn’t Richard.
It was my father.
I answered.
“Dad.””
“Nia.””
His voice was calm.
Too calm.
“How are you feeling?””
I looked out the window.
The city was waking up below me.
“I feel like I don’t recognize my life anymore.””
There was a pause.
Then he said:
“Sometimes losing an illusion is painful.””
I closed my eyes.
“What happens now?””
“I handle what needs to be handled.””
I knew that tone.
My father wasn’t angry.
Anger was loud.
My father was quiet when he was dangerous.
“Dad, I don’t want revenge.””
“I know.””
“I just want the truth.””
“And you’ll have it.””
Before I could respond, my apartment door buzzed.
I froze.
“Someone’s here.””
“Don’t open it until you know who it is.””
I walked carefully toward the door and checked the camera.
A man in a suit stood outside.
Not Richard.
Not anyone I recognized.
“Who are you?”” I asked through the speaker.
The man looked directly into the camera.
“Ms. Nia Carter?””
“Yes.””
“My name is Daniel Brooks. Your father asked me to deliver something.””
I opened the door slightly.
He handed me a folder.
“What is this?””
“Everything you never knew about the Harrington family.””
My stomach tightened.
I opened it.
Inside were documents.
Financial records.
Contracts.
Photographs.
And a name repeated across multiple pages.
Richard Harrington.
I looked at Daniel.
“How long has my father known?””
He hesitated.
“Longer than you think.””
I looked down at the papers.
There were years of transactions.
Hidden accounts.
Companies connected through complicated networks.
Then I saw something that made my hands shake.
A document dated three years before my wedding.
A document with my name on it.
“What is this?””
Daniel looked uncomfortable.
“That’s why your father wanted you to see it yourself.””
I read the first line.
And my entire body went cold.
Because it said:
*Marriage Agreement Investigation: Harrington Family Intentions Regarding Nia Carter.*
My heart stopped.
They had investigated me.
Before Richard married me.
Before he told me he loved me.
Before he promised me forever.
The Harrington family already knew exactly who I was.
I called my father immediately.
“Dad.””
He answered instantly.
“You found it.””
“What does this mean?””
Silence.
Then:
“It means Richard did not marry you by accident.””
I sat down.
“What are you saying?””
“Nia, listen carefully.””
His voice became serious.
“The Harrington family knew who you were before they approached you.””
I stared at the documents.
“Why?””
“Because of me.””
The room felt smaller.
“What?””
My father sighed.
“There are things I should have told you years ago.””
Before I could answer, my phone received a notification.
A live news alert.
I opened it.
The headline filled the screen.
*HARRINGTON FAMILY FACES FINANCIAL INVESTIGATION AFTER UNKNOWN WHISTLEBLOWER RELEASES DOCUMENTS.*
I read the first paragraph.
Then another notification appeared.
This time from an unknown number.
I opened it.
One sentence.
One message.
One warning.
*“Nia, if you want to know why Richard married you, come to the old Harrington estate alone.””*
I looked at the message.
Then at my father’s voice on the phone.
“Nia?””
I couldn’t speak.
“Who sent that?””
I stared at the screen.
Because the sender’s name appeared beneath the message.
A name I recognized.
A name that should have been impossible.
“Dad…”
My voice shook.
“It was sent from…”
I stopped.
Because the message disappeared.
May you like
And when I looked again, there was nothing there except one final word left behind.
*RUN.*
