Chapter 11: The Truth My Mother Hid
The old man left the room without another word.
No dramatic threat.
No final warning.
Nothing.
That scared me more.
People like him didn’t leave because they were defeated.
They left because they were planning.
My father watched the door close.
“He’s afraid.””
I looked at him.
“Of what?””
My father didn’t answer immediately.
Then:
“Of something he can’t control.””
Alexander sat down slowly.
For the first time, he looked exhausted.
Not powerful.
Not untouchable.
Just tired.
“My entire life,” he said quietly, “I thought I understood my father.””
Nobody spoke.
“I was wrong.””
Richard stared at him.
“You’re telling me you didn’t know?””
Alexander looked at his son.
“I knew he was ruthless.””
He paused.
“But I didn’t know how far he went.””
Margaret looked away.
“You knew enough.””
Alexander closed his eyes.
“Yes.””
That admission shocked everyone.
“You knew what happened to Elena?””
Alexander didn’t answer.
My father stepped forward.
“Answer her.””
Alexander looked at me.
“I knew she was in danger.””
My heart sank.
“And you did nothing.””
His silence was enough.
I turned away.
I didn’t want his apology.
I didn’t want explanations.
Everyone kept saying they were trapped.
Everyone had reasons.
Everyone had excuses.
But my mother was still gone.
And I was the one who paid the price.
My phone vibrated.
I looked down.
A message.
Unknown number.
But this time, there was a video attached.
My father saw my expression.
“What is it?””
I pressed play.
The screen showed a small room.
A woman sitting in a chair.
Older.
Tired.
But alive.
My breath stopped.
“Mom.””
Everyone moved closer.
My mother looked directly into the camera.
“Nia.””
Her voice was shaking.
“If you’re watching this, then he knows.””
My father leaned closer.
“Who recorded this?””
My mother continued.
“I need you to listen carefully.””
She looked terrified.
“The Harrington family will tell you the story is about money.””
She shook her head.
“It isn’t.””
The video glitched.
Then continued.
“It’s about a list.””
Alexander whispered:
“What list?””
My mother looked into the camera.
“A list of every person who helped the Harringtons hide their crimes.””
The video paused.
Then continued.
“Politicians. CEOs. Judges.””
My father’s face changed.
My mother whispered:
“People who would do anything to keep their names hidden.””
The video ended.
I stared at the black screen.
“What list?””
Alexander answered.
“The archive.””
My father looked at him.
“You knew?””
“No.””
Alexander stood.
“But I know why my father was afraid.””
Richard looked confused.
“Why?””
Alexander looked at me.
“Because Elena didn’t just collect evidence.””
A pause.
“She created a backup.””
“Where?””
Nobody answered.
Then Margaret spoke.
“Inside Nia’s life.””
I turned.
“What?””
Margaret looked ashamed.
“Your mother knew she couldn’t hide the evidence forever.””
She swallowed.
“So she hid it somewhere nobody would search.””
My father stared at her.
“Where?””
Margaret looked at me.
“With you.””
My heart raced.
“No.””
She nodded.
“Yes.””
I shook my head.
“That’s impossible.””
My mother disappeared when I was a child.
“She couldn’t have hidden something with me.””
Margaret’s voice softened.
“You don’t remember.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“What?””
“When you were little, Elena gave you something.””
My father looked at me.
“What did she give her?””
Margaret whispered:
“A necklace.””
My hand immediately moved to my throat.
The necklace.
The one I had worn since childhood.
The one my father told me belonged to my mother.
I pulled it out.
Everyone stared.
Alexander stepped closer.
“That’s it.””
My fingers tightened around it.
“No.””
My father looked shocked.
“Nia.””
I looked at him.
“You knew?””
He shook his head.
“I knew she gave it to you.””
“But not why.””
“No.””
My hands trembled.
The necklace suddenly felt different.
Not like a memory.
Like a message.
My phone rang.
This time, my mother’s number appeared.
Impossible.
I answered.
“Mom?””
Her voice came immediately.
“Nia, listen to me.””
I looked around the room.
“What’s happening?””
“You have to leave.””
“Why?””
“Because they know.””
“Who?””
My mother whispered:
“The people who killed my old life.””
The lights suddenly went out.
The entire estate went dark.
Someone outside screamed.
Then came the sound of breaking glass.
My father immediately grabbed my arm.
“Down!””
A loud impact shook the room.
Everyone froze.
Then a voice echoed from the hallway.
“Find the girl.””
My blood turned cold.
My mother’s voice came through the phone.
“Nia.””
I whispered:
“Yes?””
Her final words were almost silent.
“They’re not coming for the necklace.””
May you like
A pause.
“They’re coming for you.””
