Chapter 12: The Price Of Knowing The Truth
The first thing I heard was glass breaking.
The second thing I heard was my father saying my name.
“Nia!””
Everything happened at once.
The lights were gone.
The room was dark.
People were moving.
Shouting.
Running.
But my father’s hand found mine.
He pulled me behind the heavy wooden table.
“Stay down.””
“I’m not leaving you.””
His eyes met mine.
“You don’t understand.””
“No.””
I held onto his arm.
“I understand now.””
For years, everyone tried to protect me by keeping me away from the truth.
But the truth had found me anyway.
And now there was no going back.
Footsteps moved through the hallway.
Slow.
Controlled.
Whoever entered the house wasn’t afraid.
My father looked toward the doorway.
“They’re professionals.””
Alexander nodded.
“My father’s people.””
Richard looked horrified.
“You brought them here?””
Alexander looked at him.
“No.””
A pause.
“He did.””
Margaret covered her mouth.
“The archive.””
Everyone understood.
The evidence.
The list.
The secrets.
Someone wanted it badly enough to come directly into the estate.
A flashlight moved across the room.
My father tightened his grip.
Then a voice called out.
“Robert Carter.””
My father didn’t respond.
The voice continued.
“We know you’re here.””
I looked at him.
“Who is that?””
He whispered:
“Someone who has spent years trying to find your mother’s evidence.””
The flashlight moved closer.
Then Alexander stood.
Everyone looked at him.
“What are you doing?”” Richard asked.
Alexander ignored him.
He walked into the open.
“Enough.””
The people outside stopped.
A man stepped into the doorway.
Older.
Cold expression.
“Mr. Harrington.””
Alexander looked at him.
“You’re making a mistake.””
The man smiled.
“No.””
He looked around.
“I’m correcting one.””
My father moved forward.
“Who are you?””
The man looked at him.
“You don’t remember me?””
My father studied him.
Then his face changed.
“No.””
The man smiled.
“Yes.””
My father whispered:
“Thomas.””
I looked between them.
“Who is Thomas?””
Nobody answered.
Thomas looked at me.
“You’re Elena’s daughter.””
I stepped back.
“How do you know my mother?””
His smile disappeared.
“Because I was there the night she vanished.””
The room went silent.
My father moved instantly.
“You were involved.””
Thomas shrugged.
“I was following orders.””
“Whose orders?””
Nobody spoke.
Then Thomas looked toward the hallway.
The answer came from behind him.
“My orders.””
The old man appeared again.
My grandfather.
He had returned.
But this time, he wasn’t calm.
He was furious.
“Leave.””
Thomas looked surprised.
“Sir?””
“I said leave.””
The room froze.
Even Thomas.
My grandfather looked at me.
“Nia.””
I hated how easily he said my name.
Like he had earned the right.
“You need to understand something.””
I laughed quietly.
“Do I?””
“Yes.””
He stepped closer.
“Everything I did was to protect this family.””
I stared at him.
“No.””
My voice became stronger.
“Everything you did was to protect yourself.””
For the first time, he looked wounded.
Only briefly.
Then his expression hardened.
“You think your mother was a hero.””
“She was.””
“You think she saved the world.””
“She saved herself from becoming like you.””
The room went silent.
My grandfather stared at me.
And I realized something.
The one thing he could not control wasn’t money.
It wasn’t evidence.
It wasn’t power.
It was someone who wasn’t afraid of him.
My father stepped beside me.
“She’s done listening to you.””
My grandfather looked at him.
“You always were her weakness.””
My father smiled.
“No.””
He looked at me.
“She’s my strength.””
Before anyone could respond, my phone buzzed.
A new message.
Everyone looked.
I opened it.
One sentence.
From my mother.
*The necklace is not the key.*
My heart stopped.
Another message appeared.
*You are.*
I looked at the necklace in my hand.
Then at my father.
Then at the man who had spent decades controlling everyone around him.
Because suddenly I understood.
My mother hadn’t hidden the evidence inside the necklace.
She had hidden something else.
Something only I could unlock.
And my grandfather knew.
Because his next words were barely a whisper.
“Take her.””
The room exploded.
My father grabbed me.
Alexander moved toward the door.
Richard shouted.
Margaret screamed.
And as I was pulled away from the chaos, I heard my mother’s voice through the phone one final time:
“Nia…”
I held the phone tightly.
“Mom?””
Her voice trembled.
“Whatever happens next…”
May you like
A pause.
“Do not let them find what’s inside you.””
