Chapter 2: The Hidden Recordings

Vanessa stood frozen in the kitchen, water dripping from her hair onto the floor she had forced me to scrub.

For the first time in my life, she looked small.

Not powerful.

Not terrifying.

Small.

"Darren, you're misunderstanding," she said quickly.

My father didn't move.

"I don't think I am.""

She forced a laugh.

"You know how dramatic children can be. Lily probably made things seem worse than they were.""

I watched Dad's jaw tighten.

That was when I knew something had changed.

Before, whenever Vanessa talked, Dad listened.

This time, he didn't.

He looked at me.

He walked over and slowly lowered himself onto the floor.

The same floor I had been scrubbing.

"Lily.""

I looked away.

"It's okay.""

"No," Dad whispered.

His voice broke.

"It isn't.""

He reached for my hand.

I flinched.

Not because I was afraid of him.

Because I had forgotten what kindness felt like.

Dad noticed.

And that hurt him more than anything.

"I'm sorry," he whispered.

Vanessa stepped forward.

"Darren, don't do this.""

He looked up.

"Don't do what?""

"Don't let a four-year-old manipulate you.""

The room became silent.

Dad stood.

"She's four.""

Vanessa crossed her arms.

"And?""

"And she shouldn't be afraid of telling her father the truth.""

Her face hardened.

"You always take her side.""

Dad stared at her.

"Because she needs someone to.""

Vanessa rolled her eyes.

"You're being ridiculous.""

Dad pulled his phone from his pocket.

"No.""

He unlocked it.

"I'm being a father.""

Vanessa looked at the screen.

Her confidence disappeared.

"What is that?""

"The security footage.""

She swallowed.

"Darren...""

"I watched the recording from today.""

He tapped the screen.

"Then I watched yesterday.""

Another tap.

"Then last week.""

Her face changed.

Dad's voice became colder.

"Then I watched every recording from the last six months.""

My stomach twisted.

I didn't know there were recordings.

I didn't know anyone had seen.

Dad looked at me.

"I should have watched sooner.""

Vanessa immediately shook her head.

"This is crazy. You're spying on your own wife?""

"No.""

Dad stepped closer.

"I'm protecting my daughter.""

Vanessa laughed nervously.

"From me?""

Nobody answered.

Because the answer was obvious.

She looked at me.

And for a second, I saw the old Vanessa.

The one who whispered threats when Dad wasn't around.

The one who said nobody would believe me.

Then she remembered Dad was watching.

And she changed again.

"Sweetheart," she said softly, pretending to care.

"I think you've misunderstood some things.""

I hid behind Dad's leg.

A four-year-old shouldn't know how to recognize a fake smile.

But I did.

Dad noticed.

He gently placed his hand on my shoulder.

"Don't talk to her right now.""

Vanessa's eyes narrowed.

"Darren, you don't know what you're doing.""

"I know exactly what I'm doing.""

He walked toward the living room.

"Pack a bag.""

She stared at him.

"What?""

"You heard me.""

"You can't be serious.""

"I am.""

Vanessa's voice rose.

"You're throwing away our marriage because your daughter spilled juice?""

Dad stopped.

Then he turned around.

"No.""

His eyes were full of pain.

"I'm ending this because my daughter learned to be scared in her own home.""

That sentence broke something inside me.

Because I had never heard anyone say that before.

Someone finally understood.

Vanessa grabbed her purse.

"You'll regret this.""

Dad didn't answer.

She walked upstairs.

The moment she disappeared, Dad picked me up.

I was too big to be carried like a baby.

But he did it anyway.

"I'm sorry, pumpkin.""

I pressed my face against his shoulder.

"Did I make you mad?""

His arms tightened.

"No.""

A tear rolled down his cheek.

"You could never make me mad for needing help.""

That night, I slept in Dad's room.

For the first time in months, I didn't hear Vanessa walking through the hallway.

I didn't hear her angry footsteps.

I didn't hear the bedroom door slam.

I thought everything was finally over.

I was wrong.

Because at midnight, Dad received a message.

One that made him sit up in bed.

One that made his face lose all color.

He read it once.

Then again.

Then he looked at me sleeping beside him.

May you like

And whispered:

"How did she know about the second camera?""
