Chapter 7: The Child She Wanted

The police searched our house for hours.

I watched from the stairs as adults opened drawers, checked files, and carried boxes into the living room.

Everything felt different.

The house that once felt like a prison suddenly felt like it was finally telling the truth.

Dad noticed me watching.

He walked over.

"Hey.""

I looked at him.

"Are they taking Vanessa away forever?""

Dad sat beside me.

"I don't know.""

That scared me.

Because Dad always knew everything.

But now he didn't.

And I realized adults could be scared too.

One officer, Detective Harris, found something hidden inside Vanessa's old closet.

A small notebook.

Black cover.

No name.

No label.

Just pages filled with handwriting.

Dad read the first page.

Then he stopped.

"What is it?""

Detective Harris looked serious.

"These appear to be personal notes.""

Dad turned the notebook around.

The first sentence was enough.

"Lily needs to forget her old life.""

My stomach hurt.

Dad immediately closed the notebook.

"No.""

Detective Harris looked at him.

"We need to read it.""

Dad didn't want to.

But he knew they had to.

The notebook revealed things Vanessa had never admitted.

She had written about my mother.

About Dad.

About me.

Not like a family member.

Like a possession.

One page said:

"Darren doesn't understand what he lost. He needs someone who can replace her.""

Another said:

"Lily is young enough. She will adjust.""

Dad had to stop reading.

He walked outside.

I followed him.

He was standing in the backyard, staring at nothing.

"Daddy?""

He wiped his face quickly.

"I'm okay.""

"You don't have to lie.""

He looked at me.

And then he smiled sadly.

"Where did you learn that?""

I shrugged.

"From Vanessa.""

That hurt him.

Later that afternoon, Detective Harris explained something.

"Mr. Carter, we believe Vanessa had been planning this for years.""

Dad looked confused.

"Planning what?""

"Becoming part of your family.""

He placed several documents on the table.

"She changed jobs to get closer to your social circle. She researched your wife's death. She inserted herself into your life slowly.""

Dad looked sick.

"Why?""

Detective Harris answered:

"Because she wanted what your wife had.""

"My family.""

The detective nodded.

"Yes.""

I sat quietly.

I didn't understand everything.

But I understood one thing.

Vanessa never loved me.

She wanted me.

There was a difference.

A few days later, Vanessa's lawyer contacted Dad.

She wanted to meet.

Dad refused at first.

But Detective Harris told him something important.

"She knows something.""

"What?""

"She knows who helped her.""

So Dad agreed.

The meeting happened at the courthouse.

Vanessa walked in wearing a perfect suit.

Her hair was done.

Her makeup was flawless.

She looked like the woman everyone believed she was.

Until she saw me.

Her expression changed.

For a second, I saw anger.

Then it disappeared.

"Lily.""

I moved closer to Dad.

Vanessa noticed.

"You taught her to fear me.""

Dad's face hardened.

"No.""

He looked directly at her.

"You taught her that.""

Vanessa sighed.

"I made mistakes.""

Dad laughed quietly.

"Mistakes?""

Her lawyer interrupted.

"Let's keep this civil.""

Dad looked away.

Then Vanessa leaned forward.

"I can explain everything.""

Dad stared at her.

"Then explain.""

She looked at me.

"Your mother was not who you think she was.""

Dad immediately stood.

"Don't.""

But Vanessa continued.

"She lied to you.""

My hands held onto Dad's jacket.

"Stop.""

Vanessa smiled slightly.

"You deserve to know the truth.""

Dad stepped forward.

"You don't get to use my daughter anymore.""

For the first time, Vanessa looked genuinely angry.

"She's not just your daughter.""

Everyone became silent.

Dad stared.

"What does that mean?""

Vanessa looked at him.

And whispered:

"Ask yourself why your wife chose you.""

Dad froze.

Because Vanessa wasn't threatening him anymore.

She was revealing something.

May you like

Something about my mother.

Something Dad didn't know.
