Chapter 6: The Night Everything Changed
Dad stared at the photograph for almost ten minutes.
I was sitting on the living room floor, coloring a picture of our house, but I could feel something was wrong.
Adults always thought children didn't notice things.
They were wrong.
Children notice everything.
They notice when voices become quieter.
They notice when smiles disappear.
They notice when someone says, "I'm fine," but their eyes say something else.
Dad finally placed the photograph on the table.
His hands were trembling.
I had never seen him look afraid before.
"Daddy?""
He looked at me quickly.
"Yeah, sweetheart?""
"Are you sad?""
He forced a smile.
"No.""
I tilted my head.
"You are.""
That broke him.
He walked over and sat beside me.
For a few seconds, he didn't say anything.
Then he picked up my coloring book.
"You drew Mommy.""
I looked at the picture.
It was just a stick figure with long hair holding my hand.
"I don't remember her.""
Dad swallowed.
"I know.""
"Was she nice?""
His eyes filled with tears.
"The nicest person I've ever known.""
I looked at the photograph again.
"Did Vanessa hurt her?""
Dad didn't answer immediately.
That silence was an answer.
The next morning, Dad went to meet the person from the photograph.
He didn't want me to come.
But I heard the name.
"Daniel.""
That was the man standing beside Vanessa.
A man who looked like he knew secrets.
Dad met him at a small coffee shop outside town.
Daniel was older, with tired eyes and a nervous expression.
When Dad sat down, Daniel immediately said:
"I didn't know how else to reach you.""
Dad placed the photograph on the table.
"You took this?""
Daniel nodded.
"Years ago.""
"Why do you have it?""
Daniel looked down.
"Because I was there.""
Dad leaned forward.
"Where?""
Daniel took a deep breath.
"The night your wife died.""
The words hit Dad like a physical blow.
For a moment, he couldn't speak.
"My wife died in a car accident.""
Daniel nodded slowly.
"That's what everyone believed.""
Dad's face changed.
"What are you saying?""
Daniel looked around the coffee shop.
Then he lowered his voice.
"I'm saying it wasn't as simple as you were told.""
Dad stood halfway from his chair.
"Be careful.""
"I am being careful.""
Daniel opened a folder.
Inside were old documents.
Photos.
A police report.
And one picture that made Dad stop breathing.
It showed Vanessa near my mother's car.
The night she died.
Dad stared at it.
"Where did you get this?""
Daniel rubbed his forehead.
"I worked security at the company where your wife used to work.""
Dad looked confused.
"My wife didn't work with Vanessa.""
Daniel looked at him.
"She didn't know Vanessa worked there.""
A cold silence filled the space between them.
Dad sat down slowly.
"What was Vanessa doing there?""
Daniel looked at the picture.
"She was following your wife.""
"Why?""
Daniel hesitated.
"Because Vanessa believed your wife ruined her life.""
Dad's hands clenched.
"She killed her?""
Daniel quickly shook his head.
"I don't know.""
That answer seemed to anger Dad more.
"You don't know?""
"I know Vanessa was obsessed. I know she was angry. I know she was near that car.""
Dad stared at him.
"Why didn't you tell anyone?""
Daniel looked ashamed.
"Because I was afraid.""
"Of Vanessa?""
Daniel nodded.
"You don't understand. She wasn't just cruel. She was calculated.""
Dad looked at the papers.
"What else?""
Daniel pushed one final document across the table.
"This.""
Dad read it.
And his expression changed completely.
"What is this?""
"An old adoption inquiry.""
Dad looked up.
"Why would Vanessa have this?""
Daniel whispered:
"Because she wasn't trying to become your wife.""
A pause.
"She was trying to become Lily's mother.""
Dad froze.
The drive home was silent.
When he walked through the door, I ran to him.
"Daddy!""
Usually, he smiled.
This time, he picked me up and held me tighter than ever.
That night, he sat beside my bed until I fell asleep.
But I woke up hours later.
The hallway light was on.
Dad was standing downstairs.
Talking on the phone.
"I need the full investigation reopened.""
A pause.
"No, this isn't about my marriage.""
His voice became softer.
"It's about my daughter.""
I closed my eyes.
Pretending to sleep.
Then I heard him say something that made my heart race.
"Because Vanessa didn't enter our lives by accident.""
The next morning, police returned to our house.
And this time, they weren't there to question Vanessa.
They were there to search for evidence that could prove she had been planning everything from the beginning.
