Chapter 3: The Woman Who Knew Too Much

The next morning, Dad barely slept.

I could tell.

Even at four years old, I knew when someone was worried.

He moved around the house quietly, making phone calls in the kitchen while I ate cereal at the table.

Every few minutes, he looked toward the front door.

Like he was waiting for something.

Or someone.

Finally, he sat beside me.

"Lily, I need to ask you something.""

I held my spoon.

"Did Vanessa ever tell you not to talk about things?""

Dad's question confused me.

I nodded.

"What things?""

I looked down.

"Everything.""

His face fell.

"Everything?""

I nodded again.

"She said people wouldn't believe me.""

Dad closed his eyes.

Like hearing those words hurt.

"What else did she say?""

I whispered.

"She said Daddy was too busy.""

His hands tightened.

That was the moment I saw regret on his face.

Not anger.

Not sadness.

Regret.

Because he realized I had been alone.

A few hours later, someone knocked on the door.

Dad immediately stood.

I watched him look through the window.

Then his expression changed.

It wasn't Vanessa.

It was a woman I had never seen before.

Dad opened the door slightly.

"Who are you?""

The woman looked nervous.

"My name is Claire. I used to work with Vanessa.""

Dad didn't open the door wider.

"What do you want?""

Claire looked at me.

Then back at him.

"I think you need to know the truth about your wife.""

Dad stepped outside.

I could still hear them.

"Why now?""

Claire looked down.

"Because I should have spoken sooner.""

Dad's voice was sharp.

"Spoken about what?""

Claire hesitated.

"Vanessa wasn't just cruel to Lily.""

A cold feeling moved through me.

"What does that mean?""

Claire took a deep breath.

"She had a pattern.""

Dad stared at her.

"Explain.""

"She liked controlling people. Making them feel helpless.""

Dad crossed his arms.

"Why didn't anyone tell me?""

Claire looked ashamed.

"Because Vanessa was good at pretending.""

That was true.

She was.

She was better at pretending than anyone I had ever known.

Claire continued.

"She told people Lily was a difficult child.""

Dad shook his head.

"She was four.""

"I know.""

Claire looked toward the house.

"That's why I couldn't stay quiet anymore.""

Dad looked back at me.

Then he asked:

"What else?""

Claire reached into her bag.

She pulled out a small folder.

"I found these.""

Dad opened it.

Inside were printed messages.

Emails.

Notes.

His face changed as he read.

I couldn't see everything.

Only one sentence.

But I remembered it forever.

"Children are easiest to control before they learn they have a voice.""

Dad's hands started shaking.

"Where did you get this?""

"Vanessa's old laptop.""

Dad looked up.

"Why did you have access?""

Claire swallowed.

"Because she asked me to help her delete files.""

The silence was terrifying.

Dad slowly closed the folder.

"She was planning something.""

Claire nodded.

"Yes.""

"What?""

Claire looked at me.

And her next words changed everything.

"She wasn't trying to punish Lily.""

Dad froze.

"Then what was she doing?""

Claire whispered:

"She was trying to make Lily afraid enough to stop telling you the truth.""

That night, Dad reviewed every piece of evidence.

Every recording.

Every message.

Every hidden detail.

And then he found something that made him call the police.

A video file.

A file Vanessa thought she had deleted.

The title was simple.

May you like

Just two words.

"Lily's Lesson.""
