Chapter 9: The Final Evidence
The letter changed everything.
Detective Harris brought it to Dad personally.
He didn't want to send it through email.
He said some things needed to be seen with your own eyes.
Dad read it slowly.
The handwriting was Vanessa's.
The date was from before she entered our lives.
Before she met Dad.
Before she became my stepmother.
The letter began:
"Dear Anna.""
My mother's name.
Dad's hands tightened.
The words were filled with anger.
Vanessa wrote about how unfair life was.
How my mother had everything.
A loving husband.
A beautiful daughter.
A happy home.
And Vanessa believed she deserved it more.
Then came the sentence that made Dad put the paper down.
"I know what I have to do.""
Dad stared at Detective Harris.
"Can this prove she planned everything?""
The detective nodded.
"It helps.""
"But?""
"We need one more thing.""
"What?""
"The person she sent this to.""
Dad frowned.
"She sent it?""
"Yes.""
Detective Harris placed another file on the table.
"Someone received these letters.""
Dad looked at the name.
His face changed.
"Daniel.""
The pieces finally connected.
Daniel wasn't just someone who knew Vanessa.
He was part of her past.
But the question remained.
Was he helping her?
Or was he trying to stop her?
Dad found out the answer that evening.
Daniel came to our house.
But this time, he didn't look afraid.
He looked tired.
"I need to tell you everything.""
Dad opened the door.
"You should have done that years ago.""
Daniel nodded.
"I know.""
They sat in the living room.
I listened from the hallway.
Daniel explained everything.
Vanessa had blamed my mother for her breakup with him.
She believed my mother had ruined her life.
But the truth was different.
Daniel had left Vanessa because he discovered her lies.
The manipulation.
The obsession.
The way she controlled people.
"I tried to warn Anna," Daniel said.
Dad looked up.
"When?""
"Before she died.""
The room became silent.
Dad's voice was barely audible.
"You spoke to my wife?""
Daniel nodded.
"She knew something was wrong.""
"Why didn't she tell me?""
"Because Vanessa threatened her.""
Dad looked furious.
"What did she threaten?""
Daniel looked toward me.
"She threatened Lily.""
My heart stopped.
Dad immediately stood.
"What?""
Daniel swallowed.
"Vanessa said if Anna told anyone, she would make sure Lily was taken away.""
Dad closed his eyes.
For years, he had wondered why his wife kept secrets.
Now he finally knew.
She wasn't protecting herself.
She was protecting me.
The next day, Vanessa's trial began.
She sat across the room.
Still calm.
Still pretending.
Until the evidence was shown.
The recordings.
The notebook.
The letters.
The photographs.
One by one, her perfect image disappeared.
Finally, the prosecutor showed the last piece.
A recording from a hidden device Vanessa didn't know existed.
Her own voice.
Speaking about me.
"I just need her to stop trusting him.""
The courtroom became silent.
Vanessa looked down.
For the first time, everyone saw her.
Not the woman she pretended to be.
The woman she really was.
After the hearing, Dad and I walked outside.
The sun was shining.
I held his hand.
"Is she gone?""
Dad looked down at me.
"She can't hurt you anymore.""
I nodded.
But I still had one question.
"Daddy?""
"Yes?""
"Why did she hate me?""
Dad stopped walking.
He knelt beside me.
"Because you reminded her of something she could never have.""
"What?""
He smiled sadly.
"Real love.""
I hugged him.
And for the first time, I believed we were safe.
But years later, when I was old enough to understand everything...
I discovered one final secret.
A secret my father had kept from me.
Because he thought he was protecting me.
May you like
And it was hidden inside the security camera footage from the very first day.
The day he came home.
