Chapter 4: The File She Forgot
Dad watched the video alone first.
He told me later that he almost couldn't finish it.
Not because of what he saw.
Because of what he heard.
The file began with Vanessa sitting in the living room.
She was talking to someone on the phone.
Her voice was calm.
Almost happy.
"I told you, she'll stop eventually.""
Dad froze when he heard that.
The person on the other end was unknown.
Vanessa continued.
"Kids don't need explanations. They need rules.""
Dad paused the video.
His hands were shaking.
Then he pressed play again.
The next few minutes showed things I didn't remember.
Times Vanessa made me stand in corners.
Times she took away my toys.
Times she scared me into silence.
Things I thought were normal.
Things I thought every child experienced.
But Dad knew better.
The police arrived that afternoon.
Vanessa came back to the house expecting to win.
She walked through the front door confidently.
Then she saw the officers.
Her smile disappeared.
"What is this?""
Dad stood across the room.
"This is the truth.""
She laughed.
"You called the police because I disciplined your daughter?""
One officer stepped forward.
"We need you to answer some questions.""
Vanessa looked at Dad.
"You would do this to me?""
Dad didn't answer.
She pointed at me.
"Because of her?""
My small hands held onto Dad's shirt.
Dad looked at me.
Then at Vanessa.
"Because of what you did to her.""
Vanessa's expression changed.
The mask slipped.
Just for a second.
"You have no idea what you're destroying.""
Dad shook his head.
"No.""
His voice was quiet.
"You did.""
The officers took Vanessa outside.
But before she reached the door, she turned back.
She looked directly at me.
And she whispered:
"This isn't over.""
Dad moved in front of me.
"You don't get to scare her anymore.""
Vanessa smiled.
A cold, empty smile.
Then she left.
I thought that was the end.
But three days later, Dad received another call.
This time from the police.
They had searched Vanessa's belongings.
And they found something hidden inside a locked box.
Something she had never shown anyone.
Something connected to my mother.
My real mother.
Dad opened the box carefully.
Inside was a photograph.
And on the back of the photograph were words written in Vanessa's handwriting.
Words that made Dad whisper:
May you like
"No...""
Because they revealed the secret Vanessa had been hiding since before she entered our family.
