Chapter 12: The Inheritance Nobody Knew About

I couldn’t move.

Heir.

The word felt unreal.

Like something from a movie.

Not my life.

Not the life where I worried about wedding flowers and seating arrangements.

Not the life where my biggest fear was disappointing people.

“What are you talking about?”” I asked.

Richard looked almost disappointed.

“You still don’t understand.””

“Then explain.””

He opened another folder.

Inside were financial records.

Property documents.

Company files.

“My sister built an empire.””

I stared.

“Your sister?””

“My sister was your biological mother.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

“Yes.””

Richard continued.

“She owned everything before your father took control.””

Daniel looked confused.

“My father?””

Richard nodded.

“Your father helped her.””

My eyes widened.

“Helped her?””

“He loved her.””

The room went silent.

My mother looked away.

Richard continued.

“Then he betrayed her.””

I felt sick.

“My father?””

“Yes.””

Everything I knew about my family was collapsing.

Richard placed another document on the table.

“A custody agreement.””

I picked it up.

My name.

My mother’s name.

A date from before I could remember.

“He gave you away.””

I looked at Richard.

“No.””

“He believed hiding you would keep you safe.””

My mother stepped forward.

“That’s not the whole story.””

Richard looked at her.

“Of course you would say that.””

She ignored him.

“Emma, your father didn’t abandon you.””

I looked at her.

“Then why was I hidden?””

“Because people were looking for you.””

“Who?””

Richard smiled.

“People like me.””

The honesty was terrifying.

My mother continued.

“Your father discovered Richard was trying to take control of your mother’s company.””

Richard laughed.

“She was weak.””

“No,” my mother said.

“She trusted the wrong people.””

I looked between them.

“So everyone lied to protect me?””

My mother nodded.

“Yes.””

I looked at Chloe.

“And you?””

Her eyes filled.

“I found out six months ago.””

“How?””

“Richard showed me documents.””

I frowned.

“Why would he show you?””

“Because he wanted me to hate you.””

The answer shocked me.

“He told me you would inherit everything.””

She laughed sadly.

“He convinced me that you were stealing the life I deserved.””

I looked at her.

“And then?””

“And then I found out he was using me.””

A tear fell.

“I realized I was becoming exactly what he wanted.””

Silence.

For the first time, I understood Chloe.

Not completely.

Not enough to erase what she did.

But enough to see the manipulation.

Richard had found the cracks in all of us.

And pushed.

Daniel stepped closer.

“Why involve me?””

Richard looked at him.

“Because your father’s family owed me.””

Daniel’s expression hardened.

“I had nothing to do with that.””

“No.””

Richard smiled.

“But your father did.””

A folder landed in front of Daniel.

He opened it.

His face changed.

“What is this?””

“Proof.””

Daniel read.

Then looked up.

“My father knew?””

“Yes.””

“Knew about Emma?””

“Yes.””

Daniel looked sick.

“He knew who she was?””

“Yes.””

I watched him.

For once, Daniel wasn’t acting.

He looked genuinely destroyed.

Richard turned back to me.

“Now you understand.””

“No.””

My voice was quiet.

“I understand that you ruined lives.””

His smile faded.

“I corrected history.””

“You destroyed my family.””

“I exposed the truth.””

“You manipulated my sister.””

“She was easy to manipulate.””

Chloe flinched.

I stepped toward him.

“And you think that makes you powerful?””

Richard looked at me.

“Yes.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

Everyone looked at me.

“You’re just another person who thinks hurting people gives you control.””

For the first time, Richard looked angry.

Only slightly.

But enough.

“You sound like your mother.””

“Good.””

The warehouse went silent.

Then Richard smiled again.

“Then you should know one more thing.””

My stomach tightened.

“What?””

He pulled out one final envelope.

Older than the others.

“My sister wrote this before she died.””

I froze.

“My biological mother?””

“Yes.””

He held it out.

“She knew the truth.””

I didn’t move.

“What truth?””

Richard looked directly at me.

“The reason your father hid you.””

A pause.

“He wasn’t protecting you from me.””

My fingers tightened.

“Then who?””

May you like

Richard smiled.

“Your own mother.””
