Chapter 9: The Person Behind the Revenge

Nobody spoke after my mother said those words.

The photograph sat on the table.

A frozen moment from years ago.

My father.

Daniel’s father.

And a third person standing between them.

I stared at the unfamiliar face.

A man in a dark suit.

Confident smile.

One hand resting on Daniel’s father’s shoulder.

“Who is he?”” I asked again.

My mother looked like she wanted to disappear.

“His name is Richard Vale.””

Daniel’s expression changed.

“Vale?””

My mother looked at him.

“You know that name.””

He swallowed.

“My father had a business partner named Richard.””

I felt a chill.

“Your father never mentioned him?””

Daniel shook his head.

“No.””

My mother sat down.

“Because Richard wasn’t just a business partner.””

She looked at the photograph.

“He was the person who manipulated everyone.””

Chloe frowned.

“How?””

My mother opened another folder.

Inside were newspaper clippings.

Legal documents.

Old photographs.

“I found these hidden with your father’s letter.””

She handed one to Daniel.

He read it.

Then his face changed.

“What is this?””

I looked at the paper.

It was an old business agreement.

Richard Vale.

Daniel’s father.

My father.

Three names.

Three signatures.

Except one signature was crossed out.

Daniel looked at my mother.

“My father signed this?””

“Yes.””

“And Emma’s father?””

“Yes.””

“Then why did my father hate him?””

My mother’s eyes filled with tears.

“Because your father discovered the truth.””

She pointed at the document.

“Richard manipulated both families.””

I looked closer.

“What truth?””

My mother hesitated.

Then she said:

“Richard created a fake financial crisis.””

The room went silent.

“He made Daniel’s father believe your father was stealing money.””

Daniel’s face went pale.

“And my father believed him?””

“Yes.””

“What happened?””

My mother looked at me.

“Your father lost everything.””

I felt my throat tighten.

“And Daniel’s father?””

“He became richer.””

The pieces started connecting.

The hatred.

The secrets.

The letters.

But something still didn’t make sense.

“Why would Richard send me that message today?””

Everyone looked at me.

I showed them the phone.

The unknown warning.

The hidden photographs.

My mother’s face changed.

“Because he knows.””

“Knows what?””

“That you found the truth.””

Daniel stood.

“Richard is alive?””

My mother nodded.

“Yes.””

A cold silence filled the room.

“Where is he?””

She looked away.

“I don’t know.””

Then the front door opened.

Everyone turned.

My father’s old friend, Mr. Collins, stood there.

An elderly man who had known my family for decades.

His face was serious.

“I know where he is.””

Nobody moved.

My mother stood.

“How did you get here?””

He ignored the question.

His eyes went directly to me.

“Emma, you need to leave this house.””

My eyebrows pulled together.

“What?””

“You are not safe.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Who are you?””

Mr. Collins looked at him.

“You’re Daniel.””

Daniel’s expression hardened.

“Yes.””

The old man sighed.

“Your father spent his entire life trying to protect you from what he created.””

Daniel looked confused.

“My father?””

“Yes.””

He turned toward me.

“And your father spent his final days trying to protect you from what was coming.””

My hands became cold.

“What was coming?””

Mr. Collins reached into his coat.

Pulled out a small envelope.

Not old.

Not damaged.

New.

Fresh.

My name was written on it.

I didn’t touch it.

“Who sent this?””

Mr. Collins looked at Daniel.

Then Chloe.

Then me.

“Richard Vale.””

My heart sank.

“What does he want?””

The old man’s expression was full of regret.

“He wants what he always wanted.””

“What?””

“To finish what he started.””

I opened the envelope.

Inside was a single photograph.

A picture of me.

Taken that morning.

Before the ink.

Before the truth.

Before everything collapsed.

I turned it over.

There was a message written on the back.

*Your father failed to stop me. Daniel failed to choose correctly. Now you will decide who gets destroyed.*

My hands trembled.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

Everyone stared.

I answered.

A calm male voice spoke.

“Emma.””

I froze.

“Who is this?””

A quiet laugh.

“You already know.””

My blood ran cold.

“Richard?””

“Yes.””

The room went silent.

Then he said:

“I think it’s time you learned why your sister was never the real enemy.””

I looked at Chloe.

She looked terrified.

And then Richard said the words that changed everything.

“Because Chloe wasn’t trying to ruin your wedding.””

May you like

A pause.

“She was trying to save your life.””
