Chapter 3: The Video Before the Vows

I didn’t press play.

Not immediately.

Because sometimes the truth is terrifying before you even know what it says.

The phone sat on the table between us.

A tiny rectangle of glass.

A doorway to something I wasn’t sure I wanted to enter.

“Emma,” Rachel whispered.

“You don’t have to watch this right now.””

But I couldn’t look away.

Chloe crossed her arms.

For the first time all morning, she wasn’t smiling.

She looked exhausted.

“I tried to tell you.””

I looked at her.

“You tried to tell me by destroying my dress?””

Her face fell.

“I didn’t know how else to stop the wedding.””

The words made my stomach twist.

“Stop the wedding?””

“Yes.””

The room became completely silent.

I picked up the phone.

“Why?””

Chloe looked at the floor.

“Because I saw something.””

My fingers tightened around the phone.

“What did you see?””

She didn’t answer.

So I pressed play.

The video began with a shaky view of a hotel entrance.

The timestamp was from the previous night.

11:47 p.m.

I watched as a man walked through the doors.

Daniel.

My Daniel.

The man who had kissed my forehead that morning.

The man who had whispered, “I can’t wait to call you my wife.””

The man whose suit was hanging in our bedroom closet.

My heart started beating faster.

Then another person appeared.

A woman.

At first, I couldn’t see her face.

Then she turned.

My breath stopped.

It was Chloe.

Not my sister from that morning.

Not the angry woman standing across from me.

A younger version of her.

A version from last night.

The video showed Daniel saying something.

The audio was unclear.

Chloe moved closer to the phone.

“Turn it up.””

I increased the volume.

Daniel’s voice filled the room.

“I told you this can’t happen.””

My body froze.

Chloe answered in the video.

“You promised me.””

I stopped breathing.

“What?””

The video continued.

Daniel looked around nervously.

“Lower your voice.””

Chloe laughed.

“You’re worried someone will see us?””

My hand started shaking.

Rachel looked at me.

“Emma…”

I couldn’t respond.

Daniel’s voice came again.

“This was a mistake.””

Chloe stepped closer to him.

“A mistake?””

The video ended suddenly.

A three-second clip.

Not enough.

But enough.

Enough to destroy the perfect picture I had built in my mind.

I lowered the phone.

Nobody spoke.

Finally, I looked at Chloe.

“What is this?””

She wiped her eyes.

“You know what it is.””

“No.””

My voice cracked.

“I need you to say it.””

Chloe looked away.

“I was with Daniel.””

The room blurred.

“Last night?””

She nodded.

I felt like the floor disappeared.

“Why?””

Chloe’s eyes filled with tears.

“Because he came to me.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

“He did.””

“No.””

I said it louder.

Because if I repeated it enough, maybe reality would change.

“He told me he was confused.””

My chest hurt.

“He told me…”

She stopped.

“What?””

She swallowed.

“He told me he never stopped thinking about me.””

The words landed like a physical blow.

I remembered every dinner where Daniel asked about my sister.

Every time he said Chloe was funny.

Every time he told me she was “like family.””

I had believed him.

Because why wouldn’t I?

I had trusted both of them.

“Emma,” Chloe whispered, “I know you hate me.””

I looked at her.

“I don’t even know who you are.””

Her face crumpled.

“I was angry. I was jealous. But I was also trying to protect you.””

I laughed bitterly.

“Protect me?””

“Yes.””

“By hurting me first?””

She had no answer.

A knock came from the door.

Everyone turned.

A young assistant from the wedding venue stood there.

“Emma?””

I quickly wiped my face.

“What?””

She looked nervous.

“Daniel is asking for you.””

My heart stopped.

“He wants to know why the ceremony hasn’t started.””

Nobody moved.

Then the assistant added quietly:

“He also asked if Chloe was with you.””

My eyes slowly moved toward my sister.

Chloe looked just as shocked as I was.

Because she hadn’t told him we knew.

I looked at the phone again.

At the video.

At the ruined dress.

At the two people who had broken my trust on the same day.

Then my phone buzzed.

A new message appeared.

From Daniel.

One sentence.

*“Emma, don’t believe anything Chloe says. She’s been lying to you for years.””*

I stared at the screen.

Because beneath his message was another notification.

A new email.

From an unknown sender.

May you like

The subject line read:

*“The truth about your sister and your fiancé.””*
