Chapter 14: The Wedding That Almost Never Happened
Three months later, I stood in front of the same mirror.
The same venue.
The same room.
But everything felt different.
The bridal suite had been repaired.
The walls repainted.
The memories erased.
Except mine.
Some scars don’t disappear just because the damage is cleaned.
I looked at the dress hanging beside me.
Not the ruined gown.
A new one.
Simple.
Beautiful.
Mine.
The boutique had offered me another dress after the lawsuit against Richard became public.
I almost refused.
Then I realized something.
Richard had taken enough from me.
I wasn’t going to let him take my wedding day too.
A knock came.
“Come in.””
The door opened.
Chloe stood there.
For a moment, neither of us spoke.
Three months ago, I couldn’t imagine seeing her without feeling anger.
Now?
It was complicated.
Painful.
But different.
“You look beautiful,” she said.
I smiled slightly.
“Thank you.””
She looked at the floor.
“I almost didn’t come.””
“Why?””
“Because I didn’t think you wanted me here.””
The honesty surprised me.
I turned toward her.
“I didn’t.””
She nodded.
“I understand.””
A pause.
“But I changed my mind.””
Her eyes lifted.
“Why?””
I looked at my sister.
“Because I don’t want Richard to be the reason we lose each other.””
Her eyes filled.
“I’m sorry.””
Two words.
But this time, they were different.
No excuses.
No explanations.
Just regret.
“I know.””
She wiped her face.
“I don’t expect you to forgive me completely.””
“I don’t.””
She nodded.
“I know.””
“But I want to try.””
That was enough.
Not forgiveness.
Not forgetting.
Trying.
A few minutes later, Daniel entered.
The room changed.
Not because I hated him.
Because I remembered.
The betrayal.
The lies.
The hurt.
But also the truth.
He looked nervous.
“I can leave if you want.””
I studied him.
Three months ago, I would have begged him to stay.
Today, I didn’t need him.
And that was the difference.
“You can stay.””
He nodded.
“I know I don’t deserve another chance.””
“No.””
He looked down.
“I know.””
“But people can change.””
His eyes lifted.
“I’m trying.””
I believed him.
Not completely.
Trust wasn’t something you rebuilt in a day.
But I saw the effort.
And sometimes, that mattered.
The ceremony began.
I walked down the aisle.
Not as a woman who had everything figured out.
As a woman who had survived losing everything she thought she knew.
My mother cried.
Chloe cried.
Even Daniel struggled to hold back tears.
When I reached him, he whispered:
“You’re sure?””
I smiled.
“For the first time in my life.””
The vows were different from the ones we had written before.
The old vows were about forever.
Perfect love.
A perfect future.
The new ones were about honesty.
Choosing each other.
Even when things became difficult.
After the ceremony, everyone gathered outside.
For the first time in months, I felt peace.
Then my phone buzzed.
I almost ignored it.
Almost.
But something made me check.
An unknown message.
My heart stopped.
The sender wasn’t Richard.
It wasn’t a stranger.
It was from an account that had been inactive for years.
My biological mother.
Impossible.
The message contained one sentence.
*Emma, if you received this, then you found the first letter.*
I froze.
Another message appeared.
*But you still don’t know the final truth.*
My smile disappeared.
Daniel noticed.
“What happened?””
I showed him the screen.
His face changed.
Chloe stepped closer.
“What is it?””
I looked at my family.
At the people who had finally started telling me the truth.
Then I opened the attachment.
It was a photograph.
A hospital record.
A birth certificate.
Something impossible.
My name.
My date of birth.
And underneath it…
Another name.
Another child.
My mother had not only hidden me.
May you like
She had hidden someone else.
Someone who was still alive.
