Chapter 5: The Woman Holding the Secret

The hallway outside the bridal suite felt strangely peaceful.

That was the cruelest part.

People were laughing.

Staff members were carrying flowers.

A photographer was adjusting his camera.

Everyone was preparing for a beautiful wedding.

Nobody knew the bride was walking toward a secret that could end everything.

Rachel followed beside me.

“Are you sure about this?””

“No.””

I kept walking.

“But I need answers.””

The ceremony entrance was only thirty feet away.

A wall of white roses stood beside the archway.

The exact place the message had mentioned.

I slowed down.

My heart was pounding.

“What if this is a trap?”” Rachel asked.

I looked at her.

“Then I’m already trapped.””

She didn’t argue.

We reached the flowers.

For a moment, nothing happened.

Then I saw it.

A small envelope hidden behind the arrangement.

My name was written on the front.

*EMMA*

My fingers shook as I picked it up.

Rachel watched carefully.

“Open it.””

Inside was a flash drive.

And a handwritten note.

Three words.

*Watch this alone.*

I looked at Rachel.

“That’s impossible.””

She frowned.

“What?””

“Someone wants me isolated.””

Before she could answer, a voice behind us said:

“She’s right.””

We turned.

A woman stood at the end of the hallway.

I recognized her immediately.

Megan.

Daniel’s ex-girlfriend.

The woman he had told me was “just someone from his past.””

The woman he said had become obsessed after their breakup.

My stomach dropped.

“What are you doing here?””

Megan walked closer.

“I was invited.””

“By who?””

She looked at me.

“Daniel.””

The hallway suddenly felt smaller.

“No.””

“Yes.””

She reached into her purse and pulled out an invitation.

My name was printed on it.

The date.

The venue.

Everything.

“But why would Daniel invite you?””

Megan gave a sad smile.

“That’s the question you should have asked months ago.””

I stared at her.

“What does that mean?””

She looked toward the ceremony hall.

“Daniel is very good at making people believe whatever version of him they need.””

I crossed my arms.

“You expect me to believe you?””

“No.””

Her answer surprised me.

“I expect you to believe evidence.””

She held out her phone.

“I have messages too.””

I didn’t take it.

“Everyone suddenly has evidence today.””

Megan nodded.

“Because today was supposed to be the day he got away with everything.””

The words sent a chill through me.

“What are you talking about?””

She looked at the destroyed dress visible beneath my robe.

“He told me the wedding would never happen.””

My breath caught.

“When?””

“Three weeks ago.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

Megan unlocked her phone.

“He said Chloe would ruin it.””

I froze.

“What?””

Rachel looked at me.

Megan continued.

“He knew your sister was jealous.””

My mind raced.

“How?””

“He encouraged it.””

The world went quiet.

“What?””

Megan showed me a message.

Daniel: *“She’s emotional. If she thinks Emma is taking everything from her, she’ll eventually snap.””*

My hands went numb.

Chloe wasn’t the only one.

Daniel had been watching.

Manipulating.

Waiting.

Megan scrolled.

Another message appeared.

Daniel: *“Once Emma sees who Chloe really is, she’ll have nobody left except me.””*

I stared.

The words blurred.

“He wanted this.””

Megan nodded.

“He wanted you hurt.””

I felt sick.

“But why?””

Megan looked at me.

“Because Daniel doesn’t love people.””

I said nothing.

“He collects them.””

The phrase stayed in my mind.

Collects them.

Like possessions.

Like trophies.

A sound came from behind us.

A sharp gasp.

We turned.

Chloe stood there.

She had heard everything.

Her face was pale.

“You knew?””

I looked at Megan.

Then Chloe.

“Knew what?””

Chloe walked toward us slowly.

“About him.””

Megan looked away.

“I tried to warn you.””

Chloe laughed bitterly.

“Don’t pretend you’re innocent.””

Megan’s expression hardened.

“I never said I was.””

The three of us stood there.

Three women connected by the same man.

Three women who had believed different lies.

I looked at Chloe.

“You knew Daniel was manipulating you?””

Her eyes filled.

“I knew something was wrong.””

“But you still met him.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

She looked broken.

“Because he told me he loved me.””

The answer hurt.

Not because I felt sympathy.

Because I understood.

Daniel had found the exact weakness in each of us.

With me, he used love.

With Chloe, he used insecurity.

With Megan, he used guilt.

Then he watched us destroy each other.

My phone buzzed.

Another message.

Unknown sender.

This time, it wasn’t a warning.

It was a threat.

*Stop digging, Emma. Some truths are better buried.*

I showed it to Rachel.

Her face changed.

“That’s not from the same person.””

“What?””

She pointed.

“The writing style is different.””

My stomach tightened.

Meaning there was another person.

Another person watching.

Another person involved.

Then a voice came from the ceremony hall.

“Emma?””

Daniel.

I looked up.

He stood at the entrance.

Perfect suit.

Perfect smile.

Like nothing had happened.

Like he wasn’t the reason my entire world had collapsed.

“Can we talk?”” he asked.

Nobody moved.

Then Daniel looked past me.

At Chloe.

At Megan.

His expression changed for one second.

Only one.

But I saw it.

Fear.

And that was when I realized something.

Daniel wasn’t afraid of being caught.

He was afraid of what Chloe and Megan knew.

I stepped toward him.

“Sure.””

My voice was calm.

Too calm.

“Let’s talk.””

Daniel smiled.

But his eyes didn’t.

And as I walked closer, I noticed something in his hand.

May you like

A small black envelope.

The same kind as the one hidden in the flowers.
