Chapter 8: The Letter That Changed Everything

The drive to my parents’ house felt longer than it should have.

Nobody spoke.

Not me.

Not Chloe.

Not Daniel.

The three people who had destroyed my understanding of the past were now sitting in the same car, surrounded by silence.

Rachel followed behind us with the wedding team.

The ceremony had been postponed.

Not canceled.

Not yet.

I didn’t know what that meant.

I didn’t know what anything meant anymore.

When we arrived, my mother was waiting at the front door.

Her face looked older.

Tired.

Like she had been carrying a secret for years.

“Emma.””

She hugged me.

And for a second, I almost broke.

Because she was my mother.

The one person I thought would always protect me.

Then I remembered.

She had known about the letters.

“Mom.””

She stepped back.

“I know.””

“Do you?””

My voice was quiet.

“Did you know Chloe hid them?””

Her eyes moved toward Chloe.

That was enough.

My stomach dropped.

“You knew.””

My mother looked ashamed.

“Yes.””

The betrayal felt endless.

“How long?””

“Since the beginning.””

I stared at her.

“Seven years?””

She nodded.

“Why?””

She looked down.

“Because I was afraid.””

“Afraid of what?””

She led us into the living room.

On the table sat the box from the photo.

The letters.

All of them.

But on top was one envelope.

Old.

Yellowed.

My name written on the front.

Not Daniel’s handwriting.

Someone else’s.

I picked it up.

“Who wrote this?””

My mother took a breath.

“Your father.””

I looked at her.

“My father?””

“He wrote it before he passed away.””

My fingers tightened.

“What does it say?””

She didn’t answer.

Instead, she looked at Chloe.

Then Daniel.

Then me.

“Your father discovered something about Daniel’s family.””

Everyone went still.

Daniel frowned.

“My family?””

My mother nodded.

“Seven years ago, before Emma ever dated you, your father found out that your father and Daniel’s father were connected through a business deal.””

Daniel looked confused.

“What does that have to do with anything?””

My mother’s hands shook.

“Everything.””

She pushed the letter toward me.

I opened it.

The handwriting was familiar.

My father’s handwriting.

The first line made my breath stop.

*Emma, if you are reading this, I am no longer here to protect you.*

I covered my mouth.

The room became silent.

I continued.

*There is something I need you to know about Daniel’s family.*

My heartbeat increased.

*They are not the people they pretend to be.*

I looked at Daniel.

He looked genuinely shocked.

The letter continued.

*Years ago, I discovered that Daniel’s father used dishonest methods to take control of struggling businesses. One of those businesses belonged to a family who trusted me.*

My eyes moved faster.

*I tried to expose him. But before I could, he found out.*

I stopped.

“What?””

Daniel stepped closer.

“What does it say?””

I looked at him.

“I don’t know yet.””

But I did know one thing.

This was bigger than cheating.

Bigger than Chloe.

Bigger than a ruined wedding.

I kept reading.

*The family he hurt was yours.*

I looked up.

“What?””

My mother started crying.

“Emma…”

I shook my head.

“No.””

The words didn’t make sense.

Daniel’s father.

My father.

A connection.

“What family?””

My mother whispered:

“Your biological father’s first wife.””

Silence.

I stared.

“What?””

My mother closed her eyes.

“There are things you never knew about our family.””

Daniel stepped back.

“This is impossible.””

My mother looked at him.

“You’re right.””

Her voice hardened.

“Because your father made sure the truth disappeared.””

Nobody moved.

Then Chloe spoke softly.

“So all of this…”

She looked around.

“The wedding. The letters. Everything.””

My mother nodded.

“May have started long before any of you were born.””

I looked at Daniel.

He looked as lost as I felt.

And somehow that scared me more.

Because if Daniel didn’t know…

Who did?

My phone buzzed.

Another unknown message.

This time, there was a picture attached.

A photograph of my father.

Standing beside Daniel’s father.

And between them was a third person.

Someone I recognized.

Someone I never expected to see.

My mother saw the picture.

Her face turned white.

“No.””

I looked at her.

“Who is that?””

May you like

She whispered:

“That’s the person who destroyed our family.””
