Chapter 13: The Letter From My Real Mother

The envelope felt like it weighed a hundred pounds.

My hands shook as I held it.

A letter from the woman who gave birth to me.

A woman I had never met.

A woman whose existence had been hidden from me my entire life.

Everyone watched as I slowly opened it.

Even Richard stopped smiling.

That was the first sign that something was wrong.

Because Richard Vale had spent years controlling every room he entered.

But this letter?

This was something he couldn’t control.

Inside was a single page.

The handwriting was delicate.

Careful.

Like every word had been chosen with love.

I read the first line.

*My dear Emma,*

My breath caught.

I had never heard her voice.

Never felt her hand.

Never seen her face.

Yet those two words felt strangely familiar.

I continued.

*If you are reading this, then the people who tried to protect you have finally failed.*

I looked up.

Richard’s expression changed.

Only slightly.

But I noticed.

I kept reading.

*I wish I could have been the person who raised you. I wish I could have watched you grow. I wish I could have held you when you were scared.*

My vision blurred.

*But loving someone sometimes means letting them go.*

I swallowed.

The warehouse disappeared.

For a moment, I wasn’t standing there.

I was a little girl wondering why I never looked like the other women in my family.

I was a teenager searching for pieces of myself in old photographs.

I was an adult who thought she finally understood where she belonged.

And now I knew.

I had never known the whole story.

The letter continued.

*Emma, your father did not steal my company. He saved it.*

Everyone froze.

I looked at Richard.

His face hardened.

*Richard will tell you that your father betrayed me. He will tell you that he took what was mine. But the truth is much harder for him to accept.*

My heart started beating faster.

*Richard betrayed both of us.*

Richard stepped forward.

“That letter is a lie.””

Nobody moved.

I looked at him.

“You knew.””

His jaw tightened.

“You don’t understand.””

“No.””

I held the letter.

“You’re right.””

My voice became stronger.

“I don’t understand why you spent my entire life making me hate people who protected me.””

Richard’s eyes narrowed.

“Your father manipulated her.””

“No.””

I looked back at the page.

“My mother said you betrayed her.””

His expression darkened.

“Don’t call her your mother.””

The words were so cruel that even Daniel looked shocked.

I stepped closer.

“She was.””

Richard laughed coldly.

“She abandoned you.””

My fingers tightened around the letter.

“No.””

The confidence in my own voice surprised me.

“She sacrificed for me.””

The room went silent.

Because that was the difference.

Richard saw sacrifice as weakness.

But my mother saw it as love.

I continued reading.

*Richard believed power was something you took. Your father believed love was something you protected. That is why they could never understand each other.*

I looked at Daniel.

He lowered his eyes.

Because he understood.

He had spent years chasing what he thought love looked like.

And now he was seeing what it really required.

*Emma, there is something else you need to know.*

My heartbeat increased.

*The reason you were hidden was not because Richard wanted my company.*

I paused.

The entire room waited.

*It was because Richard wanted you.*

My blood ran cold.

“What?””

Richard’s face changed.

My mother covered her mouth.

Daniel stepped forward.

“Why?””

I read faster.

*Richard discovered that my inheritance would legally pass to my child. He believed removing you would give him complete control.*

The warehouse became silent.

Chloe whispered:

“He wanted to get rid of her?””

Richard said nothing.

And that silence answered everything.

I looked at him.

“You tried to destroy a child.””

His face remained cold.

“I tried to preserve what was mine.””

I shook my head.

“Nothing was ever yours.””

For the first time, his anger showed.

“You have no idea what was taken from me.””

“No.””

I held the letter.

“But I know what you took from everyone else.””

The police sirens sounded in the distance.

Everyone turned.

Richard’s expression changed.

“What did you do?””

I looked at him.

“I sent the files.””

His face went still.

“When?””

“While you were talking.””

Daniel looked at me.

I explained.

“The warehouse security system was still active. I uploaded everything.””

Richard stared.

“You think that matters?””

The confidence returned.

“You have no idea how powerful I am.””

Then another voice came from the entrance.

“I think we’re about to find out.””

Everyone turned.

Detectives entered with officers behind them.

Richard’s face finally lost its confidence.

One detective held up a folder.

“Richard Vale, you’re being investigated for fraud, coercion, blackmail, and attempted criminal conspiracy.””

Richard laughed.

“You have no idea what you’re doing.””

The detective looked at me.

“We have years of evidence now.””

Richard looked at Chloe.

Then Daniel.

Then me.

“You all think you won.””

Nobody answered.

Because we knew better.

This wasn’t a victory.

Not yet.

Too much had been broken.

As Richard was taken away, he stopped beside me.

“You think this ends here?””

I looked at him.

“Yes.””

He smiled.

“No.””

The officers pulled him away.

And somehow, those two letters haunted me.
