Chapter 11: The Man Who Was Supposed to Be Dead
I arrived at the abandoned warehouse just after sunrise.
I knew it was a terrible idea.
Every instinct told me to turn around.
But I had spent weeks searching for answers.
And now the person with those answers was waiting for me.
My father.
A man I buried.
A man who was supposed to be gone.
I parked outside and sat in silence.
The building looked forgotten.
Broken windows.
Rusting metal doors.
A place where secrets belonged.
I checked my phone.
No messages.
No calls.
I rolled inside.
“Daniel.””
The voice came from the darkness.
I stopped.
A figure stepped forward.
Older.
Thinner.
But unmistakable.
My father.
For several seconds, neither of us moved.
Then he whispered:
“I’m sorry.””
Those two words broke something inside me.
Not because I forgave him.
Because I didn’t know how to feel.
“You’re alive.””
He nodded.
“Yes.””
“You let me think you were dead.””
Pain crossed his face.
“I had no choice.””
“No choice?””
My voice rose.
“You let me mourn you.””
“I know.””
“You let me bury an empty coffin?””
He looked down.
“I know.””
Anger burned through me.
“You don’t get to disappear for seven years and say you had no choice.””
He accepted every word.
“I deserve that.””
I stared at him.
“Why?””
He took a deep breath.
“Because Marcus wanted me dead.””
I looked away.
“Everyone keeps saying Marcus.””
“Because Marcus is the center of everything.””
My father walked closer.
“Seven years ago, I discovered he was laundering money through several companies.””
“The same companies?””
“Yes.””
“My company?””
He nodded.
“He wanted your business from the beginning.””
I clenched my jaw.
“Then why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because you were young.””
“I was twenty-eight.””
“You were trusting.””
That hurt.
Because it was true.
My father continued.
“I thought I could expose him before he reached you.””
“But he reached me anyway.””
His face changed.
“I know.””
The pain in his eyes was real.
For the first time, I saw something besides betrayal.
Regret.
“What happened the night you disappeared?””
He looked toward the broken windows.
“Marcus found out I had evidence.””
“What evidence?””
“Proof of every crime he committed.””
“Where is it?””
He looked at me.
“Safe.””
“Where?””
“With someone I trusted.””
My expression hardened.
“Who?””
Before he answered, a noise came from outside.
A car door closing.
My father immediately changed.
Fear.
“Someone followed you.””
I looked toward the entrance.
“How do you know?””
“Because they always do.””
The warehouse door moved.
My father grabbed my chair and pulled me behind a stack of crates.
“Stay quiet.””
“What about you?””
He looked at me.
“I’ve spent seven years hiding.””
His expression hardened.
“Today I stop running.””
The door opened.
Footsteps entered.
Slow.
Confident.
A voice echoed through the warehouse.
“Daniel.””
My blood froze.
Dr. Harrison.
He stepped into view.
“I knew you would come.””
My father whispered:
“He found us.””
I looked at him.
“You know him?””
My father nodded.
“He worked for Marcus.””
The doctor smiled.
“Your father always was difficult to control.””
I stared at him.
“You tried to kill me.””
He tilted his head.
“I tried to protect my interests.””
The casual way he said it made me sick.
My father stepped forward.
“You’re done, Harrison.””
The doctor laughed.
“No.””
He looked at me.
“Your father made the same mistake you did.””
“What mistake?””
“Trusting people.””
My father’s face changed.
The doctor continued:
“You still don’t know, do you?””
I looked between them.
“Know what?””
The doctor smiled.
“Who gave Marcus the information that led him to you.””
The warehouse became silent.
My father looked at me.
Then at the doctor.
“Don’t.””
But the doctor kept talking.
“It wasn’t Claire.””
My heart raced.
“It wasn’t Ethan.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“Then who?””
The doctor smiled.
“Someone who has been helping you uncover the truth.””
I felt sick.
“No.””
The doctor nodded.
“Yes.””
My father whispered:
“Daniel, don’t listen to him.””
But the doctor stepped closer.
“The person who gave me your schedule…”
He paused.
“The person who helped plan your accident…”
My hands tightened.
“Who?””
The doctor looked directly at me.
May you like
Then said the name I never expected.
“Your father.””
