Chapter 12: The Truth That Broke Us All
The warehouse went silent.
I stared at my father.
Waiting.
Waiting for him to deny it.
To laugh.
To call the doctor a liar.
Anything.
But he didn’t.
And that terrified me.
“Dad?””
His face collapsed.
“Daniel…”
“No.””
I shook my head.
“No, you don’t get to do that.””
My voice echoed through the warehouse.
“Tell me he’s lying.””
My father looked away.
That was the answer.
The person I had spent my entire life believing was my protector…
had been part of the reason I almost died.
“How?””
My voice was barely a whisper.
“How could you?””
My father closed his eyes.
“Because I made a deal.””
The words hurt more than any scream.
“What deal?””
“To keep you alive.””
I laughed bitterly.
“Alive?””
I pointed at myself.
“Look at me.””
His eyes filled with tears.
“I know.””
“No, you don’t.””
I felt years of pain breaking open.
“You abandoned me.””
“I protected you.””
“You disappeared.””
“I sacrificed everything.””
“You let me think you were dead.””
His voice cracked.
“Because if Marcus knew I was alive, he would come after you.””
I looked at him.
“He came after me anyway.””
He nodded.
“I know.””
Dr. Harrison watched us silently.
Almost enjoying it.
“You see, Daniel?””
He smiled.
“Everyone in your life has been lying to you.””
I turned toward him.
“And you?””
His smile faded slightly.
“I never lied.””
I almost laughed.
“You tried to kill me.””
“I followed orders.””
“From Marcus?””
“Yes.””
The honesty was horrifying.
My father stepped forward.
“Daniel, listen to me.””
I didn’t move.
“I made one mistake.””
“One?””
“I believed I could control Marcus.””
The same words Claire had used.
The same excuse.
Everyone thought they could control the monster.
And everyone had brought him closer to me.
“What was the deal?””
My father looked down.
“Marcus wanted access to my company.””
“And?””
“I gave him information.””
My stomach turned.
“What information?””
“Your schedule.””
The words repeated in my mind.
My schedule.
The same thing Ethan confessed.
The same thing that allowed the accident to happen.
“You gave him my schedule?””
“I thought it would make him stop.””
“How?””
My father’s eyes filled with regret.
“He wanted proof that I couldn’t protect you.””
The warehouse felt like it was spinning.
“So you offered me.””
“No.””
“YES.””
My voice broke.
“You used me as a warning.””
My father looked destroyed.
“I thought I had more time.””
That sentence was the worst one.
Because it meant he knew there was danger.
And still, he gambled with my life.
The doctor interrupted.
“This emotional reunion is touching.””
He stepped forward.
“But we’re forgetting something important.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
“The evidence.””
My father’s expression changed.
The doctor smiled.
“You don’t actually think I came here alone, do you?””
A sound came from outside.
More footsteps.
My heart dropped.
Marcus entered.
Behind him…
was Claire.
I stared at her.
She looked terrified.
“Daniel…”
I couldn’t speak.
Marcus smiled.
“Finally. The whole family together.””
My father stepped in front of me.
“You won’t touch him.””
Marcus laughed.
“You said the same thing seven years ago.””
Claire looked at me.
“Daniel, I tried to stop this.””
I looked at her.
“Did you?””
She started crying.
“Yes.””
“Then why are you here?””
She had no answer.
Marcus walked closer.
“You still don’t understand.””
He looked at me.
“This was never about money.””
I frowned.
“What?””
He smiled.
“It was about control.””
He pointed at my father.
“He thought he could defeat me.””
Then at Claire.
“She thought she could betray me.””
Then at me.
“And you thought you could expose me.””
He laughed softly.
“All of you made the same mistake.””
“What mistake?””
Marcus’s smile disappeared.
“You underestimated who was really running this.””
The doctor looked at him.
Even he seemed surprised.
Marcus reached into his jacket and pulled out a folder.
He placed it on a nearby table.
“Inside is the truth.””
I stared at it.
“What truth?””
Marcus looked at me.
“The reason your father disappeared.””
A pause.
“The reason your accident happened.””
Another pause.
“And the name of the person who started this entire thing.””
He pushed the folder toward me.
Then whispered:
“Open it.””
I reached for the folder.
And when I saw the first page…
I realized the biggest betrayal of my life wasn’t from my wife.
Or my friend.
Or even my father.
It was from someone whose name I had never considered.
Someone who had been watching my family for years.
May you like
Someone who wanted me to find the truth.
Because the truth would destroy us all.
