Chapter 2: The Secret in My Hospital Room

The first thing I learned after the accident was that pain changes the way you see people.

Before the crash, I thought I knew my wife better than anyone.

I knew how she took her coffee.

I knew she hated thunderstorms.

I knew she cried during emotional movies but pretended she didn’t.

I knew the little scar on her left hand came from when she fell off her bike as a child.

I thought knowing those things meant I knew her.

I was wrong.

Because a person can share your bed for seven years and still hide an entire life from you.

After leaving the bedroom that day, I didn’t go far.

I rolled into the living room and sat there in silence.

Claire followed me.

“Daniel, please listen.””

I stared at the wedding photo sitting on the bookshelf.

A younger version of us smiled back.

Two people who thought love could protect them from anything.

“Who is he?”” I asked.

Claire stopped.

For a moment, she looked like she might tell me.

Then she looked away.

“His name is Marcus.””

I nodded slowly.

“How long?””

She didn’t answer.

That was the answer.

My chest tightened.

“How long, Claire?””

She wiped her face.

“Daniel…”

“How long has my wife been sleeping with another man?””

Her silence was louder than any confession.

Finally, she whispered:

“Six months.””

Six months.

I laughed.

Not because it was funny.

Because sometimes the truth is too painful for your brain to accept.

“Six months?””

She cried harder.

“I was going to tell you.””

“When?””

She looked at me.

I leaned forward in my wheelchair.

“After I learned how to walk again? After I stopped needing help getting dressed? After I stopped being an inconvenience?””

Her face changed.

“Don’t say that.””

“Why not? Isn’t that what happened?””

“No.””

“Then what happened?””

She had no answer.

I turned away.

But my mind went back to the hospital.

To the day I discovered everything.

Two weeks before I came home, I was lying in my hospital bed when a nurse handed me my phone.

“You have a missed call from someone named Ethan,” she said.

I knew Ethan.

He was my best friend since college.

I called him back.

He answered immediately.

“Daniel?””

“Yeah. What’s wrong?””

There was a long pause.

That pause bothered me.

“Where are you?”” I asked.

“I’m outside your hospital room.””

I frowned.

“What?””

The door opened.

Ethan walked in.

But he didn’t look like my friend.

He looked guilty.

Like someone carrying a secret too heavy to hold.

“Daniel,” he said quietly.

“What happened?””

He sat down.

Then he placed his phone on the table.

“I found something.””

My stomach tightened.

“What?””

He unlocked his phone.

There were messages.

Between Claire and Marcus.

Hundreds of them.

I saw my wife’s name at the top of the screen.

My hands started shaking.

“No…”

Ethan looked away.

“I’m sorry.””

I scrolled.

The messages weren’t just romantic.

They were cruel.

Claire had written things I never imagined she could say.

“I feel trapped.””

“Daniel isn’t the same anymore.””

“I don’t know if I can do this.””

I stopped scrolling.

Because the accident wasn’t even the worst part.

The worst part was realizing she had already left me emotionally before I ever entered that hospital.

I looked at Ethan.

“How did you find these?””

He swallowed.

“Because Marcus is my cousin.””

The room went silent.

I stared at him.

“What?””

“I didn’t know at first. Then I saw a picture Claire posted from your anniversary dinner. Marcus was tagged in another photo with her.””

My fingers tightened around the blanket.

“So you knew?””

“I found out three days ago.””

“And you waited?””

“I wanted to tell you in person.””

I looked away.

I didn’t know what hurt more.

My wife’s betrayal.

Or the fact that the people around me knew before I did.

Ethan reached for my shoulder.

“Daniel, there’s something else.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

He hesitated.

Then he said:

“Claire and Marcus weren’t just having an affair.””

A cold feeling moved through my body.

“What do you mean?””

Ethan picked up his phone again.

“There are messages about your accident.””

My heart stopped.

I stared at him.

“Why would they talk about my accident?””

Ethan didn’t answer.

He simply turned the screen toward me.

And the message I saw next made my blood run cold.

Because Claire wasn’t just waiting for me to recover.

May you like

She was waiting for something else to happen.

Something she never expected me to survive.
