Chapter 6: The Witness Who Came Out of the Shadows
I didn’t speak.
The woman on the phone didn’t either.
For a few seconds, all I heard was my own heartbeat.
“What did you say?””
Her voice trembled.
“I said I’m the reason you survived.””
My grip tightened around the phone.
“Who are you?””
“My name is Olivia.””
The name meant nothing.
But her words meant everything.
“How do you know about my accident?””
“I was there.””
My breathing stopped.
“What?””
“I saw what happened before the crash.””
I stood there in the dark office, surrounded by files proving my wife had betrayed me.
Now a stranger was telling me she witnessed the moment my life changed forever.
“Why didn’t you come forward?””
She was silent.
Then she whispered:
“Because they scared me.””
“Who?””
“You already know.””
I looked toward the hallway.
Toward the bedroom where Claire was sleeping.
“Claire?””
“And Marcus.””
My stomach twisted.
“What happened that night?””
Olivia took a deep breath.
“I was driving behind you. I saw a car follow you for several miles.””
“What car?””
“A black SUV.””
I frowned.
“Did you see who was inside?””
“No.””
“Then how do you know it was connected?””
“Because after your crash, that SUV stopped.””
My hand went cold.
“What?””
“It didn’t stop to help.””
The silence afterward was unbearable.
“What did it do?””
“It waited.””
I closed my eyes.
Olivia continued.
“Then a man got out. He checked your car.””
My voice dropped.
“Marcus?””
“No.””
A pause.
“Dr. Harrison.””
I sat down slowly.
The pieces were finally forming.
The surgeon.
The insurance.
The messages.
The accident.
“Why are you telling me now?””
Her voice became emotional.
“Because I saw Claire today.””
My heart tightened.
“What about her?””
“She met with Marcus.””
“When?””
“This morning.””
“What did they say?””
Olivia hesitated.
Then whispered:
“They know you found out.””
I looked at my phone.
The message from Marcus flashed through my mind.
He knows something. We need to move faster.
“What are they planning?””
The line went quiet.
Then Olivia said:
“They’re going to make sure you don’t get a second chance.””
The call ended.
I stared at the screen.
Then I made the decision.
I wasn’t staying in that house.
Not because I was afraid.
Because I finally understood something.
Claire didn’t see me as her husband anymore.
She saw me as a problem.
And problems were things people removed.
I packed quietly.
A small bag.
Important documents.
The evidence.
Everything I had collected.
Before leaving, I looked around the house one last time.
The place where I built a life.
The place where I thought I was loved.
Then I noticed something on the kitchen counter.
A letter.
With my name on it.
I picked it up.
My hands were shaking.
The envelope wasn’t sealed.
Inside was a single page.
I read the first sentence.
And my entire body went cold.
*“Daniel, if you are reading this, it means Claire’s plan didn’t work.””*
I looked at the bottom.
There was a signature.
Not Olivia.
Not Ethan.
Someone else.
Someone who had been silent the entire time.
Someone who knew the truth before anyone else.
May you like
And underneath the signature were five words:
*“Your accident was my fault.””*
