Chapter 5: The Plan They Thought I Would Never Find
I didn’t touch Claire’s phone.
Not because I didn’t want to.
Because I knew better.
A person like Claire would notice even the smallest change.
The phone’s position.
The brightness.
The last opened app.
Anything.
So I simply watched the message disappear.
Then I closed my eyes.
Pretending to sleep.
A few minutes later, Claire moved beside me.
Her phone buzzed again.
She picked it up.
I kept my breathing slow.
Controlled.
“Hello?”” she whispered.
I couldn’t hear Marcus’s voice.
But I heard hers.
“We can’t panic.””
A pause.
“I know.””
Another pause.
Then her voice became colder.
“Daniel doesn’t know everything.””
My stomach turned.
I stayed perfectly still.
She continued.
“No. He’s suspicious, but he doesn’t have proof.””
Proof.
That word stayed in my mind.
She wasn’t worried about what she did.
She was worried about what I could prove.
After she ended the call, she rolled over and went back to sleep.
I stared at the ceiling until morning.
When the sun came through the curtains, I already had a plan.
I would stop reacting.
I would stop showing pain.
And I would start collecting evidence.
The first person I visited was the mechanic who inspected my car after the accident.
His name was Paul.
I found his shop on the edge of town.
When I rolled inside, he immediately recognized me.
“Daniel?””
I nodded.
“Hey, Paul.””
He looked surprised.
“I heard you were recovering.””
“I am.””
His eyes dropped to my wheelchair.
Then back to my face.
“I’m sorry, man.””
I nodded.
“I need to ask you something about my car.””
His expression changed.
“What about it?””
“When you inspected it, what did you find?””
He hesitated.
That hesitation told me everything.
“Paul.””
He wiped his hands on a rag.
“I wasn’t sure if I should say anything.””
“Say it.””
He looked around the empty garage.
Then lowered his voice.
“The brakes weren’t just worn out.””
My heart started beating faster.
“What do you mean?””
“Someone messed with them.””
The garage suddenly felt smaller.
“How do you know?””
“Because I’ve been fixing cars for twenty years. Brake failure looks different when it happens naturally.””
I swallowed.
“Did you report it?””
He looked uncomfortable.
“I tried.””
“To who?””
He looked away.
“Your wife.””
I froze.
“My wife?””
Paul nodded.
“She came here two days after the accident.””
The air left my lungs.
“Why?””
“She asked questions.””
“What kind of questions?””
He frowned.
“Questions about whether the police would investigate. Whether insurance companies could deny payment. Whether anyone could prove someone tampered with the car.””
I felt sick.
“Did she mention anyone else?””
Paul hesitated.
Then said:
“She wasn’t alone.””
My voice became quiet.
“Who was with her?””
Paul looked at me.
“Your doctor.””
I closed my eyes.
There it was.
The connection.
Claire.
Marcus.
Dr. Harrison.
The accident.
The money.
Everything was connected.
When I returned home, Claire was waiting.
“You went somewhere.””
It wasn’t a question.
I looked at her.
“How do you know?””
She smiled slightly.
“You’re different.””
“Different how?””
“You used to tell me everything.””
I looked at her.
“And now?””
She didn’t answer.
That silence was enough.
That night, I searched through old documents.
Claire had always organized our paperwork.
Bills.
Insurance.
Legal documents.
Everything.
I opened the locked drawer in my office.
Inside were files I had never checked.
And there it was.
A folder with my name on it.
My hands shook as I opened it.
Inside were copies of documents.
Insurance policies.
Medical information.
Financial statements.
And something else.
A new life insurance policy.
I stared at the date.
It had been created one month before my accident.
The beneficiary was Claire.
But beneath her name was another signature.
A witness signature.
I looked closer.
My blood ran cold.
Because I recognized the handwriting.
It belonged to someone who had visited me every single day in the hospital.
Someone I trusted completely.
Someone who knew exactly how vulnerable I was.
Dr. Harrison.
I closed the folder.
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
“Hello?””
For several seconds, there was only silence.
Then a woman whispered:
“Daniel… you need to leave that house immediately.””
I sat frozen.
“Who is this?””
Her voice shook.
“Someone who knows what Claire and Marcus are planning.””
“Who?””
Another pause.
May you like
Then she said the words that changed everything.
“I’m the reason your accident failed.””
