Chapter 4: The Face Behind the Betrayal

The photo was only six inches wide on my phone screen.

But it felt like it weighed a thousand pounds.

I stared at it until my eyes burned.

Claire was standing beside Marcus outside a restaurant I recognized. They were smiling, relaxed, comfortable.

But they weren’t alone.

Behind them stood a man wearing a dark jacket, his hands in his pockets, looking directly at the camera.

I knew that face.

I knew that face because it had been standing beside my hospital bed.

Because that face had held my shoulder while I cried.

Because that face had told me I would walk again.

My doctor.

Dr. Harrison.

For a moment, I convinced myself I was wrong.

Pain medication.

Stress.

Betrayal making me see things that weren’t there.

I zoomed in.

No.

It was him.

The same gray hair.

The same expensive watch.

The same expressionless eyes.

My phone slipped slightly in my hand.

“Impossible,” I whispered.

But the more I looked, the more everything started making sense.

The accident.

The hospital.

The insurance questions.

Claire’s strange behavior.

The way Dr. Harrison always seemed to know details about my recovery before I mentioned them.

A memory suddenly came back.

Two days after my surgery, I woke up in the middle of the night.

The room was dark except for the light above the door.

Claire wasn’t there.

I remembered being confused because she had promised she would stay.

Then I heard voices outside.

One belonged to Dr. Harrison.

The other belonged to Claire.

At the time, I thought they were discussing my treatment.

I thought they were helping me.

Now I wasn’t so sure.

I looked at the anonymous email again.

There was only one sentence.

*“You trusted the wrong people.””*

My hands tightened around the phone.

I needed answers.

But I couldn’t confront Claire yet.

Not until I knew exactly what happened.

Not until I knew how deep this went.

I called Ethan.

He answered after one ring.

“Daniel?””

“I need you to come over.””

His voice immediately changed.

“What happened?””

“I found someone else involved.””

A pause.

“Who?””

I sent him the photo.

The typing bubble appeared.

Then disappeared.

Then appeared again.

Finally, he replied.

*“I’m coming now.””*

Twenty minutes later, Ethan walked through my front door.

The moment he saw my face, he knew something was wrong.

“What happened?””

I turned my phone toward him.

He looked at the picture.

His expression changed.

“No.””

“Yes.””

He shook his head.

“That’s Dr. Harrison.””

“I know.””

Ethan walked closer.

“Are you sure?””

I looked at him.

“Ethan, he operated on me.””

He looked back at the photo.

Then quietly said:

“Why would your surgeon be meeting your wife and her boyfriend?””

That was the question.

The one I couldn’t escape.

We spent the next hour searching through everything.

Messages.

Emails.

Bank statements.

Anything connected to Claire.

Then Ethan stopped.

“Daniel.””

I looked up.

“What?””

He turned his laptop around.

“There’s a payment.””

My stomach tightened.

“From who?””

He pointed at the screen.

“Your company account.””

I frowned.

“That’s impossible.””

Before the accident, I owned a small construction company. It wasn’t huge, but it was successful enough to support us comfortably.

Claire handled some of the finances.

I trusted her.

That was my mistake.

“How much?”” I asked.

Ethan looked uncomfortable.

“Thirty thousand dollars.””

My chest tightened.

“When?””

He clicked again.

“Three days before your accident.””

The room went silent.

Three days.

Before the crash.

I remembered that week.

Claire had been acting differently.

She kept asking when I would update my will.

She kept talking about “planning for the future.””

I thought she was worried.

I thought she was being responsible.

I never imagined she was preparing.

Ethan looked at me.

“Daniel, there’s something you need to understand.””

“What?””

“Your accident might not have been an accident.””

The words hung in the air.

I wanted to reject them.

I wanted to laugh.

I wanted to say he was crazy.

But deep down…

I already knew.

Because my car had not simply lost control.

The brakes had failed.

The mechanic told me that after the crash.

At the time, everyone assumed it was bad luck.

A mechanical failure.

A terrible coincidence.

But now?

Nothing felt like a coincidence anymore.

That evening, Claire came home.

I watched her walk through the door.

The woman who had betrayed me.

The woman who may have wanted me gone.

She smiled when she saw me.

“There you are.””

I forced myself to smile back.

“Long day?””

She walked over and kissed my cheek.

The touch made my skin crawl.

“Yes. Exhausting.””

I looked at her.

“Where were you?””

She froze slightly.

Then smiled.

“Shopping.””

“Alone?””

A tiny crack appeared in her expression.

“Yes.””

I nodded.

“Interesting.””

She studied me.

“What does that mean?””

“Nothing.””

But she knew.

Something had changed.

She could feel it.

That night, after Claire went to sleep, I stayed awake in the dark.

I listened to her breathing beside me.

The same woman who once made me feel safe.

The same woman who now made me afraid.

At 2:13 a.m., her phone lit up.

She was asleep.

I reached over.

Slowly.

Carefully.

And saw a message appear on the screen.

From Marcus.

*“He knows something. We need to move faster.””*

My heart stopped.

Because they weren’t just hiding anymore.

They knew I was searching.

May you like

And worse…

They were preparing their next move.
