Chapter 7: The Confession Hidden in the Letter
I read the sentence three times.
*“Your accident was my fault.””*
The words blurred on the page.
For a moment, I thought I had misunderstood.
Maybe I was exhausted.
Maybe my mind had finally reached its limit.
But the signature at the bottom remained clear.
*Ethan.*
My best friend.
The man who had sat beside my hospital bed.
The man who had uncovered Claire’s messages.
The man who told me he wanted to help me find the truth.
My hands went numb.
“No…”
I dropped the letter onto the kitchen counter.
Every emotion hit me at once.
Anger.
Confusion.
Betrayal.
I had already accepted that my wife had lied to me.
I had prepared myself for the possibility that Claire wanted to destroy my life.
But Ethan?
That was something I couldn’t process.
My phone buzzed.
A message.
From Ethan.
*“Daniel, we need to talk. There are things I should have told you.””*
I stared at the screen.
The timing was too perfect.
Almost like he knew.
Almost like he was waiting for me to find it.
I typed back.
*“Where are you?””*
His reply came instantly.
*“The old coffee shop near the hospital.””*
I looked at the letter again.
Then at the front door.
A part of me wanted to ignore him.
A part of me wanted to drive away and never speak to any of them again.
But I needed answers.
So I went.
The coffee shop was nearly empty when I arrived.
Rain tapped against the windows.
The same kind of rain that fell on the night of my accident.
Ethan sat in the corner.
He looked older.
Tired.
Like he hadn’t slept in days.
When he saw me, he stood.
“Daniel…”
I raised my hand.
“Don’t.””
He stopped.
I placed the letter on the table.
His face changed immediately.
He knew.
“You found it.””
I stared at him.
“Explain.””
He sat down slowly.
“I was hoping you wouldn’t find that yet.””
“Yet?””
My voice became sharper.
“You wrote that my accident was your fault.””
He looked down.
“Yes.””
The answer was so calm it made me angry.
“You’re admitting it?””
He rubbed his face.
“I’m admitting I was involved.””
The room felt silent.
I leaned closer.
“What does that mean?””
Ethan looked at me.
“Three months before your accident, I found out Marcus was stealing money from investors.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“He was desperate. He owed people a lot of money.””
I listened carefully.
Because every piece mattered.
“Claire knew?””
“Yes.””
My jaw tightened.
“How?””
“Because she was helping him.””
I looked away.
Of course she was.
“But where do you fit into this?””
Ethan swallowed.
“I found out they were planning something.””
“What?””
“They wanted access to your company.””
My fingers curled around the edge of the table.
“My company?””
He nodded.
“Claire had been moving money around. Marcus wanted control of your business assets. But they needed you gone.””
I felt sick.
“And you knew?””
“Yes.””
The honesty almost hurt more than another lie.
“Then why didn’t you stop them?””
His eyes filled with regret.
“Because I tried.””
I said nothing.
He continued.
“I confronted Marcus.””
“When?””
“A week before your accident.””
He looked down.
“He threatened me.””
“What did he say?””
Ethan’s voice became quieter.
“He said if I got involved, I would lose everything.””
I stared at him.
“That’s not an excuse.””
“I know.””
The rain outside grew heavier.
“So why did you let it happen?””
Ethan closed his eyes.
And for the first time, I saw something I had never seen before.
Fear.
“I made one mistake.””
“What mistake?””
“I thought I could handle it myself.””
He looked at me.
“I followed Marcus the night before your accident.””
My heart raced.
“What did you see?””
“I saw him meeting Dr. Harrison.””
I leaned back.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because I didn’t know how bad it was.””
“That’s a lie.””
He looked away.
I knew.
He knew more.
Much more.
“Ethan.””
He stayed silent.
“Tell me everything.””
After several seconds, he finally spoke.
“The night of your accident, I followed Marcus again.””
My chest tightened.
“And?””
“I saw him near your car.””
The words landed like a punch.
“You saw him?””
“Yes.””
“And you did nothing?””
His eyes filled with shame.
“I was scared.””
I stood there, unable to believe what I was hearing.
My best friend had watched the storm coming.
And he had let me walk into it.
“Daniel, listen to me.””
I looked at him.
“I know what I did was wrong.””
“Wrong?””
My voice broke.
“You watched someone try to kill me.””
He looked down.
“I thought I could fix it afterward.””
I laughed bitterly.
“Afterward?””
I pointed at my wheelchair.
“This is afterward.””
Ethan had no answer.
For a long moment, neither of us spoke.
Then he reached into his jacket.
And placed a small USB drive on the table.
“What is that?””
“Everything.””
I stared at it.
“Everything?””
“Messages. Recordings. Bank transfers.””
He pushed it toward me.
“I’ve been collecting evidence since the accident.””
“Why?””
“Because I knew eventually they would come after me too.””
I looked at the USB.
Then at him.
“Why give it to me now?””
His expression changed.
“Because they already made their next move.””
My stomach tightened.
“What move?””
Ethan looked toward the window.
Then whispered:
“Claire filed papers this morning.””
“What papers?””
He looked at me.
“Divorce papers.””
I expected to feel pain.
But I didn’t.
Only emptiness.
“What else?””
Ethan hesitated.
“She also filed a claim saying your mental condition makes you incapable of managing your company.””
I stared at him.
“She’s trying to take control.””
He nodded.
“And she has someone supporting her.””
“Who?””
Ethan’s face turned pale.
“Your doctor.””
I looked down at the USB drive.
My entire life had become a battlefield.
My wife.
My friend.
My doctor.
All connected.
But one question remained.
If Ethan knew everything…
why had he waited until now to tell me?
Before I could ask, my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
A man’s voice spoke.
“Daniel.””
I froze.
I recognized it immediately.
Marcus.
“You should stop digging.””
My hand tightened around the phone.
“How did you get this number?””
A quiet laugh.
“You really think Claire was the only person watching you?””
I looked at Ethan.
Then back at the phone.
Marcus continued:
“You have no idea what your friend did to protect himself.””
The call ended.
And when I looked at Ethan’s face…
May you like
I realized Marcus had just revealed something.
Something Ethan still hadn’t told me.
