Chapter 11: The Daughter I Forgot Twice

I sat on the floor.

I don’t remember choosing to sit.

My body just gave up.

Because the truth had become too heavy to carry standing.

Emma and Lily.

Two daughters.

One father.

Two lives.

One missing.

I looked at the photograph inside the necklace.

Two babies sleeping beside each other.

Emma’s tiny hand wrapped around Lily’s blanket.

My daughters.

My children.

And I had forgotten one of them.

Then I looked at Caroline.

“How?””

She cried silently.

“I don’t know how to explain it.””

“Try.””

She wiped her face.

“After Emma disappeared, you changed.””

I looked down.

“You mean after my accident.””

She nodded.

“After everything.””

Daniel spoke quietly.

“You couldn’t accept losing her.””

I looked at him.

“She was my daughter.””

“Yes.””

“And you knew?””

Daniel looked away.

“I knew.””

“Everyone knew except me.””

Nobody argued.

That hurt.

Rachel stepped closer.

“Ryan, you need to understand.””

“No.””

My voice was quiet.

“You all keep saying that.””

I stood.

“You keep telling me what I need to understand.””

I looked around the room.

“I need to understand why everyone lied.””

Silence.

Then Caroline stepped forward.

“I lied because I was afraid.””

“Of what?””

She looked at Lily.

“Of losing you.””

I shook my head.

“You already lost me.””

That sentence destroyed her.

She covered her mouth.

I hated seeing her hurt.

But I hated not knowing my own life more.

Claire watched everything silently.

Then she spoke.

“Your father wasn’t trying to punish you.””

I looked at her.

“Don’t defend him.””

“I’m not.””

She shook her head.

“I’m telling you what happened.””

She walked toward the hidden room.

“Your father discovered Emma and Lily had something unusual.””

“What?””

She looked at Dr. Miller.

The doctor sighed.

“Memory connection.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Dr. Miller finally spoke.

“Children develop emotional patterns from the people closest to them.””

I stared.

“That’s not unusual.””

“No.””

He shook his head.

“But Emma and Lily shared something rare.””

Rachel held Emma’s hand.

“They remembered things they never experienced.””

I frowned.

“What?””

Claire explained:

“When Emma was taken, Lily was a baby. But after the separation, Lily started drawing places she had never seen.””

My heart stopped.

“The hidden room.””

Everyone looked at Lily.

She nodded.

“I drew Emma.””

I felt a chill.

“She knew?””

Caroline whispered:

“She always knew.””

I looked at my daughter.

Four years old.

A child who had been feeding a stranger behind her wall because something inside her told her that girl belonged.

“How?””

Nobody answered.

Then Daniel said:

“Because they’re connected.””

I looked at him.

“They’re sisters.””

“No.””

He shook his head.

“It’s more than that.””

I didn’t like the way he said it.

“What do you mean?””

Daniel looked at Dr. Miller.

The doctor hesitated.

Then:

“Your father believed certain memories could survive.””

I stared.

“Survive?””

“Even when removed.””

A cold feeling spread through me.

“You mean my memories.””

“No.””

Dr. Miller looked at Emma and Lily.

“Their memories.””

The room went silent.

Claire continued.

“Your father thought if he could separate Emma from you, eventually the connection would disappear.””

“And it didn’t.””

“No.””

She looked at the two girls.

“It got stronger.””

I looked at Lily.

All those times she talked to imaginary friends.

All those times she stared at the wall.

She wasn’t imagining.

She was remembering.

Then I heard something.

A sound from outside.

A car door.

Everyone froze.

Daniel immediately turned toward the window.

“No.””

Rachel grabbed Emma.

“What?””

Daniel looked terrified.

“He found us.””

I felt anger replace fear.

“Who?””

Before anyone answered, the front door opened.

A voice called out.

“Ryan?””

My blood went cold.

Because I knew that voice too.

My father.

Again.

Alive.

Again.

Standing somewhere in my house.

Claire whispered:

“He came himself.””

I walked toward the hallway.

Caroline grabbed my arm.

“Don’t.””

I looked at her.

“Why?””

Her voice shook.

“Because the man who raised you…”

She swallowed.

“…is not the man who came back.””

I stepped into the hallway.

And there he was.

Older.

Different.

But unmistakable.

My father.

He looked at me.

And smiled.

“Hello, son.””

I stared.

“You’re alive.””

He nodded.

“Yes.””

My fists clenched.

“Why?””

He looked past me.

Toward Emma.

Toward Lily.

Then back at me.

“Because I finally found what I was looking for.””

“What?””

His eyes moved to the two girls.

“The last piece of my research.””

My blood ran cold.

“You’re talking about my daughters.””

He smiled.

“No, Ryan.””

May you like

A pause.

“I’m talking about yours.””
