Chapter 14: The Choice I Was Never Given

The first knock on the door was polite.

That was the terrifying part.

Not a kick.

Not shouting.

Just three calm knocks.

Like someone visiting an old friend.

Nobody moved.

Then another knock.

“Ryan.””

The voice outside was calm.

Professional.

“We don’t want anyone hurt.””

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“That’s what they always say.””

I looked at him.

“You know them?””

He nodded.

“They were behind everything.””

Rachel held Emma close.

Caroline grabbed Lily’s hand.

And for once, nobody was arguing.

Nobody was hiding.

We were all afraid of the same thing.

The door opened slightly.

My father stepped forward.

“I’ll handle this.””

I grabbed his arm.

“No.””

He looked at me.

“Ryan.””

“You don’t get to fix this.””

His eyes softened.

“You still think I’m the villain.””

I stared at him.

“You erased my life.””

“Yes.””

“You manipulated everyone.””

“Yes.””

“You turned my daughters into a project.””

His face changed.

“I never wanted that.””

“Wanting something different doesn’t erase what you did.””

He looked down.

And for the first time, my father looked old.

Not powerful.

Not dangerous.

Just old.

“I know.””

The honesty surprised me.

Then the door opened.

A man walked inside.

Not forcing his way in.

Not threatening.

Just entering like he belonged there.

He wore a gray suit.

His hair was silver.

His smile was friendly.

Almost warm.

“Ryan.””

I stared.

“Who are you?””

He looked around.

“So many familiar faces.””

Then he looked at Emma and Lily.

“There they are.””

I stepped in front of my daughters.

The man smiled.

“Protective.””

“Yes.””

He nodded.

“Good.””

That response confused me.

“What?””

He looked at my father.

“You were right about one thing.””

My father said nothing.

The man turned back.

“The strongest memories come from love.””

I felt sick.

“You’re the person who funded this.””

He smiled.

“Dr. Victor Hale.””

I didn’t know the name.

But everyone else reacted.

Rachel.

Daniel.

Caroline.

Everyone.

Victor looked pleased.

“You remember the name.””

“I don’t remember you.””

“No.””

He smiled.

“But you will.””

I hated how confident he sounded.

“What do you want?””

He looked at Emma.

Then Lily.

“The same thing your father wanted.””

My fists tightened.

“They’re not experiments.””

Victor tilted his head.

“That’s where you’re wrong.””

“No.””

“Yes.””

He stepped closer.

“Your daughters are proof that memory is not stored only in the brain.””

I shook my head.

“They’re children.””

“They’re both.””

His smile faded.

“And they’re the future.””

I looked at my father.

“You created this.””

My father looked away.

Victor laughed.

“Your father created the foundation.””

He pointed toward Dr. Miller.

“He perfected the process.””

Then toward Claire.

“She preserved the evidence.””

Everyone froze.

I looked at Claire.

“What?””

Her face went pale.

Victor smiled.

“Didn’t she tell you?””

Claire whispered:

“Ryan…”

He continued.

“Claire wasn’t just watching when you died.””

My stomach dropped.

“She caused it.””

The room exploded.

“No.””

Daniel moved toward him.

Victor didn’t even react.

“She was desperate.””

Claire’s face collapsed.

“I was trying to stop him.””

My father looked at her.

“You caused the accident.””

Silence.

I stared.

“What?””

Claire started crying.

“I didn’t mean for it to happen.””

My mind couldn’t process anything.

The accident.

My death.

My missing memories.

All connected.

“Why?””

Claire looked at me.

“Because your father was going to erase you.””

I shook my head.

“So you killed me?””

“No.””

She stepped closer.

“I tried to stop the machine.””

Victor smiled.

“And failed.””

Everyone went silent.

Claire continued.

“The accident happened during the fight.””

She looked at me.

“You died.””

A tear fell down her face.

“And I spent eight years trying to undo what I did.””

I looked at my father.

Then Victor.

Then Claire.

Everyone had blood on their hands.

Everyone had a reason.

But my daughters didn’t.

I looked at Emma.

She was crying.

Lily was holding her hand.

Two little girls surrounded by adults who had treated their lives like a war.

Something inside me changed.

I stepped forward.

“No one is taking them.””

Victor smiled.

“You don’t understand the situation.””

“I understand enough.””

“You’re one person.””

I looked around.

Caroline.

Rachel.

Daniel.

Even my father.

Broken people.

But still people.

“We’re not one person.””

Victor sighed.

“Ryan.””

He sounded disappointed.

“You always choose emotion.””

“Yes.””

I looked at my daughters.

“That’s the point.””

Then the lights went out.

Not flickering.

Gone.

A second later, alarms started.

Victor turned.

“What did you do?””

My father smiled.

For the first time all night.

“I remembered.””

The house shook.

The security system shut down.

Doors unlocked.

Phones turned on.

And every screen in the house displayed one message.

A message written by me.

Not the old me.

Not the new me.

Me.

*IF YOU ARE SEEING THIS, I FINALLY MADE THE RIGHT CHOICE.*

Victor stared at the screen.

May you like

And for the first time…

He looked afraid.
