Chapter 7: The Truth My Father Buried

The note fell from my hands.

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

The words were still sitting there.

Heavy.

Impossible.

*Because Caroline was never the real enemy.*

I looked at my wife.

The woman who had lied to me.

The woman who had hidden a child inside our house.

The woman who knew about a life I had forgotten.

The easiest thing in the world would have been to hate her.

Maybe I should have.

But my father’s warning had changed something.

Because my father had never trusted easily.

And if he was warning me from beyond the grave, there was a reason.

“Caroline.””

She looked at me.

Her face was broken.

“I know what it looks like.””

I laughed quietly.

“You don’t get to say that anymore.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I know.””

“Do you?””

I pointed around the room.

“A woman I was apparently married to is standing in my house. A daughter I didn’t know existed has been living behind my wall. A doctor erased my memories.””

My voice cracked.

“And you expect me to believe you’re the victim?””

Caroline lowered her head.

“No.””

That answer surprised me.

She didn’t defend herself.

She didn’t argue.

She just stood there.

Guilty.

Rachel stepped forward.

“Ryan, she’s telling the truth about one thing.””

I looked at her.

“Which thing?””

“She wasn’t the one who took Emma.””

I stared at Caroline.

“Then what was she?””

Caroline closed her eyes.

“The person who helped cover it up.””

Silence.

The words were worse because she said them herself.

I felt Lily’s small hand grab mine.

“Daddy?””

I looked down.

Her eyes were scared.

Not because of the strangers in the room.

Because the adults she trusted were falling apart.

I knelt beside her.

“Hey.””

She swallowed.

“Are you mad at Mommy?””

I didn’t know how to answer.

Because I was.

But I also saw the fear in my daughter’s face.

And I knew children should never have to carry the weight of adult mistakes.

“I’m trying to understand.””

She nodded slowly.

Then she whispered:

“Mommy cried every night.””

I looked at Caroline.

She looked away.

“Why?””

Lily hugged herself.

“She said she made a bad choice.””

Caroline covered her mouth.

“Lily…”

My daughter looked at her.

“I heard you.””

The room became painfully quiet.

Rachel sat down beside Emma.

“Caroline.””

My wife looked at her.

“You need to tell him.””

Caroline nodded.

“I know.””

She took a deep breath.

Then she looked at me.

“Your father knew Daniel.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“Before Emma disappeared.””

Daniel’s face hardened.

“They worked together.””

I looked at him.

“You knew my father?””

Daniel nodded.

“I met him years ago.””

My memories felt like broken glass.

Pieces.

Random pieces.

My father sitting at a desk.

Phone calls late at night.

Arguments behind closed doors.

I had always thought he was just stressed.

But maybe I had been wrong.

“What did they work on?””

Nobody answered immediately.

That scared me.

Finally, Rachel spoke.

“People.””

I frowned.

“What?””

She looked at Dr. Miller.

“Your father funded research.””

The doctor didn’t react.

Because he already knew.

“What kind of research?””

Rachel’s voice became quiet.

“Memory.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

I looked at Dr. Miller.

“You weren’t just a doctor.””

He said nothing.

“You were part of this.””

He looked away.

That was enough.

Daniel walked toward the wall of photographs.

“Your father believed memories were weaknesses.””

He touched one picture.

“He thought if you could remove pain, you could control people.””

I stared at him.

“And Emma?””

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“Emma was an accident.””

Rachel held her daughter closer.

“They weren’t supposed to take her.””

“Then why did they?””

Daniel looked at Caroline.

“Because someone made a mistake.””

Caroline whispered:

“It was me.””

Everyone turned.

She was crying.

“I found documents.””

I stared.

“What documents?””

“Your father’s files.””

She wiped her face.

“I was working at the company connected to him before we met.””

My stomach tightened.

Caroline had never told me that.

“I found out what he was doing.””

“What did you do?””

“I tried to expose him.””

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“And that’s when everything went wrong.””

Caroline nodded.

“They found out.””

“Who?””

She looked at Dr. Miller.

“Everyone.””

The doctor sighed.

“You’re making this sound worse than it was.””

I turned toward him.

“Worse?””

My voice became cold.

“You erased my memories.””

He looked directly at me.

“You asked me to.””

The room froze.

I shook my head.

“No.””

“Yes.””

He stepped closer.

“You came to me after Emma disappeared.””

My heart started pounding.

“You were broken.””

A flash.

A hospital room.

My own voice.

Begging.

“Make me forget.””

I stumbled backward.

“No.””

Rachel looked at me sadly.

“You’re remembering.””

More flashes came.

Daniel crying.

Rachel screaming.

Emma’s tiny hand.

A car.

Rain.

A man standing over me.

My father.

My father saying:

“Ryan, this is for your own good.””

I grabbed the table.

“What did he do?””

Daniel answered.

“He made sure you forgot everything.””

The room spun.

“And Caroline?””

Rachel looked at her.

“She helped us hide Emma after she found out your father was looking for her.””

I stared.

“Then why hide her from me?””

Caroline broke down.

“Because the last time you remembered…”

She stopped.

I stepped closer.

“What?””

Her voice was barely audible.

“You almost died.””

Nobody spoke.

Then my phone rang.

The sound made everyone jump.

I looked at the screen.

Unknown number.

I answered.

“Hello?””

A voice came through.

An old voice.

A voice I knew.

A voice that should have been impossible.

“Ryan.””

My blood turned cold.

“Dad?””

Nobody in the room moved.

The voice continued.

“I knew this day would come.””

I couldn’t breathe.

“You’re dead.””

A pause.

Then a quiet laugh.

“No, son.””

May you like

The voice became darker.

“I just wanted everyone to think I was.””
